Gender discrimination is a massive problem in today’s society. Gender discrimination is discrimination based on one’s gender or sex, which is seen more in females than in males (Gender Discrimination In Canada). In consequence of gender discrimination, females do not have the same opportunities as males. The Catholic perspective is against gender discrimination and views it as an unethical issue breaking the Catholic faith. God wants us to follow the Golden Rule which is to treat others the way we would want to be treated (Matthew 7:12, Bible Gateway), but the issue of discrimination is breaking this rule. This issue can affect a woman and her physical health. Inequalities between men and women are increasing continuously. The capacity of women having to care for themselves is growing, scientific studies have shown that there still needs improvement in maternal health and infant mortality (Vatican, The Holy See Delegation To The Economic and Social Council). This reveals that discrimination occurs clearly in a woman's physical health, as men have more accessibility to health care. Archbishop Celestino Migliore argues that there is a need to eliminate inequalities in the health sector or else women’s population will decrease. The great amount of violence against women, particularly in the home, workplace, in the professional field and pension scale, are growing concerns. Gender discrimination creates an unacceptable work environment as it can promote harassment, violence and can also increase in employee turnovers (The Problem of Gender Discrimination in the Labor Market). Statistics say that one in three women worldwide are raped in their lifetime, or one every ten seconds (Confronting Gender Inequality and Discrimination). The structure and attitude of discrimination lead to violence against women remaining inescapable. Gender discrimination is also seen in school, resulting in the daily fear for young girls to attend school due to the rape of girls with disabilities, and forced marriages. These are recent examples that represent discrimination and violence against women (Vatican, Intervention of Archbishop Silvano M. Tomasi). These examples show how human beings are not following the Golden Rule, treating others how they would want to be treated, boys are not putting themselves in girls shoes and being aware of the constant fear that girls go through on a daily basis just to go to school.
