Sci-fi is a category that often provokes the imagination and challenges what we know is and isn’t possible; however, Gattaca is a Sci-fi film that also provokes thought onto those who presume fate and challenges human potential. Gattaca is an excellent movie for everyone as it tells a story of triumph and inspires all people to reach beyond what they are told they can and cannot do. Gattaca is much greater than a scientific fantasy; it will leave you with more than dreams about the future—it will leave you with dreams of what you can accomplish today. Vincent must fake his identity throughout the movie in order to fit in with the “genetically superior”; his true genetic identity predicts that he should not be alive—much less training to be an astronaut. Vincent must be careful not to leave a trace of his true self anywhere in this bleak future. The various settings in the movie are often spacious allowing emphasis on the color of the rooms, lights, and people that of which are often grey, white, or pale. The bland colorless attributes of the setting represent how future technology has over simplified and controlled people’s life; everyone is born knowing what their life will be like, because of this there are no surprises and life is dull. The most powerful use of color is one that gives the viewer hope and strength—it is the color orange. In Gattaca the color orange comes from the sun; throughout the movie rays from above can be seen in moments of hope and the very space from which it comes from is Vincent’s aspired location.
