It is set within a world dominated by people who are genetically engineered. Andrew Niccol's film 'Gattaca' portrays a realistic view of the future and gene manipulation in the “not too distant future”. Throughout the film, many significant scenes shows evidence of “Gattaca” is a world which only cares about genetic perfection, yet it is the imperfect Vincent who achieves the most. Vincent although seemingly cursed with an imperfect genetic composition, but he manages to overcome considerable odds in order to achieve his dream of space travel. Vincent also shows his achievement through the race between Anton and himself, especially in the swimming scenes. .
Right through the film, Vincent and Anton races in different ways since childhood to adulthood. The really distinct one will be the swimming scenes. With Vincent and Anton, their swimming competitions are held in the ocean, which is a natural place, symbolizing rebirth. Initially, Vincent loses the race because of the health problem that he is born with and impression, given pressured by his parents and the pre-school, of being weak and frail. In the third swimming sequence it is Anton, who is angry and puzzled. Again, Vincent beats Anton when they are adults. As Vincent rescues Anton from drowning, the subjective shot shots Vincent looks up to the dark sky and the stars, this is symbolic of his own struggle and of their struggle as brothers where DNA defines who you are and “valid or not” in this world.Vincent, meanwhile, through his determination and will of force is able to fulfill his dream of going to the stars and once again beats Anton in swimming. “Yo...

...preparing for Vincent and his colleagues to go to Titan indicates both of them will be leaving this world.
Vincent seems condemned to an empty and unfulfilling life when introduced into the society of the “not too distant future”. He is disadvantaged because of his parents' adherence of non-well born genes which leave his short lifespan and different diseases and problems. Consequently, in this society where genetic engineering is a common thing rather than an exception, it appears that Vincent will always live in the shadows of genetically superior beings. Although Vincent is at the lower end of the genetic hierarchy, it is due to his ferocious determination and unquenchable desire that he attained himself from the other colleagues of Gattaca and achieve his dreams. It is these qualities that consider Niccola's central protagonist unique in the world of Gattaca.

...He is still anchored to his past and transmits the message that one makes their own choices and should be satisfied with their lives. Moreover, the story shows that one should not be extremely rigid and refuse to change their beliefs and that people should be willing to adapt to new customs in order to prevent isolation. Lastly, reader is able to understand that sacrifice is an important part of life and that nothing can be achieved without it. Despite the wind that can sometimes blow feverishly and the waves that may slow the journey, the boat should not change its course and is ultimately responsible for completing its voyage.

...g the perfect life should seem unrealistic to anyone evaluating the goal from an objective perspective; however the circumstances of the characters in the presented literary works exaggerate the expectations of everyday society. Each work focuses on portraying a flaw inherent in human nature from a different angle and ultimately, the characters’ quests for perfection demonstrate that the flaws permeating human nature are inescapable, prophesying failure for all those who seek to embody perfection.
In this novel, the society is centered around dichotomies; “youth and dotage” (Balzac 67), “the young man who has possessions and the young man that has nothing” and “the young man who thinks and the young man who spends” (87). Any person who falls outside of either box is called a “[child] who learn[s]… too late” or can “never appear in polite society” (87), essentially meaning they are undesirable in a formal society because they cannot follow expectations. The titular character, Paquita, is an “oriental” foreigner, from Havana, domesticated in Paris when she was sold to a wealthy woman who desired her. She fits into no culture entirely, as she is “part Asian houri on her mother’s side, part European through education, and part tropical by birth” (122). She is bisexual, choosing neither men nor women over the other. She is controlling, dressing Henri in women’s clothing (119), but controlled as she is reduced to a possession. However, there are ways in which a person can still be desired even if they are not easily pigeonholed. With her golden eyes and sensuality, Paquita fulfills both of the main pursuits of this society, “gold and pleasure” (68). Consequently, unlike the Marquis and his irrelevance in society, Paquita is highly sought after, thus making her a valuable commodity. Her desirability is not because of who she is as a human, but instead what
Victor remembers his childhood as a happy time with Elizabeth, Henry and his mother and father. But looking back, Victor see’s his first tragic event, the death of his mother as “an omen, as it were, of [his] future misery.” Chapter 2 He blames his passion for education as the impetus to his suffering. “in drawing the picture of my early days, I also record those events which led, by insensible steps, to my after tale of misery: for when I would account to myself for the birth of that passion, which afterwards ruled my destiny” CHAPTER 2
As the story begins, the reader is immediately told of Victor’s noble stature in society as he states “I am by birth a Genevese, and my family is one of the most distinguished of that republic” (Shelly 14). His family was constantly travelling when he was younger and his parents devoted all their affection towards him. As he grew older, his desire for knowledge leads him to travel abroad so he could earn the best education. Victor was born into a happy, enjoyable, and wealthy life, but still strived to excel at everything in his life. The passion he expresses towards bettering himself in the means of knowledge connects the reader to him. Everyone has goals, and seeing someone push themselves to the limits to achieve them gives a sense of hope. Unfortunately, Victor’s lust for knowledge go...
Fermina Daza was raised in an environment where women’s success is based on her ability to marry a man of honor and monetary value. She is expected to be brought up in this manner by a fellow female or mother; however Fermina’s mother died when Fermina was very young, thus her father, Lorenzo Daza, an illiterate mule trader, was left to take on the role. Márquez identifies Lorenzo’s motives and expectations for Fermina as he states, “When [Lorenzo Daza’s] wife died, he had set only one goal for himself: to turn his daughter into a great lady.” His emphasis on his one goal for Fermina infers that he did not necessarily have the to intentions to build or establish a communicative relationship with his daughter. He wanted better for Fe...
The entire plot of this movie gives an example of the metaphysics of quality meaning that there is more to life than just what you see or have, there are bigger qualities which we may posses. This movie proves that there is a more powerful thing beyond just the genes of a person, “There is no gene for the human spirit”, the human spirit is a larger quality than just the physical genes. Vincent was born with bad genes and is said he cannot do anything because of it, but he goes above and beyond of what his genes say and does amazing things in terms of following his dreams. Jerome has an idealistic mindset, meaning that he believes that reality is made up of nonphysical entities, ideal forms, and ideas that are timeless. Jerome believes that his physical contribution to the relationship between himself and Vincent is practically insignificant compared to Vincent's nonphysical contribution, “I only lent you my body, you lent me your dream”. Vincent has a dualistic view to life, he believes that life has to be ‘mind over matter’. Vincent put mind over matter in the way that he knows his genes are not fit to posses a job at Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, yet he still goes through with his dream, he puts his mind to it and in turn finds himself a spot with
Genetic engineering, by definition, is "the science of making changes to the genes of a plant or animal to produce a desired result" (Genetic Engineering). Throughout Aldous Huxley 's novel, A Brave New World, genetic engineering played a key role in the "utopian society" (Huxley 5). The people are no longer born naturally by reproduction, but instead they are born from bottles (Huxley 12; Huxley 36). This occurs in order to fulfill the World State 's motto, "Community, Identity, Stability" (Huxley 3). Similarly, today genetic engineering, an ever exploding field with far reaching effects, is used as a tool for improvement.
The authors' relations to us on the characters' places in society help us to relate to and comprehend their actions. If Meursault hadn't been so detached from society, Noboru so discontented with society, and Medea so vengeful toward society, we wouldn't have half of the justification needed to understand the murders that took place in the works. Given the presented material about conformity, I conclude that the stories' plots indeed grow around the unique attributes of the non-conformers, and as result, spark the reader's imagination to the fullest.
Unlike any other movie, Gasper Noe’s Irreversible (2002), with his own unusual but unique way of telling a story, shows how violence roots from love, how pain roots from pleasure, how imagination roots from reality and how death roots from life. This movie focuses Marcus and Pierre’s battle with the illusion of justice to avenge Marcus’ girlfriend, Alex, from her atrocious fate. And beginning this with the ending, Gasper Noe has created not just a realistic and powerful movie but has explained, as well, what it means
For our paper we’ve chosen to analyze the film, The Wild Child. The film helps to serve as a great example for multiple psychological phenomena and concepts pertaining to the material that we have learned throughout the course this quarter. Right from the opening scene of The Wild Child, the viewer is able to make note of the complexity that is the life of the young Victor; otherwise known as the wild child in this film. The viewer is able to view Victor’s lack of social awareness, his inability to cope in a way society deems fit when placed in a stressful situation, quintessentially he lacks the basic skill of language to voice his distressed thoughts. All of this can be analyzed from the opening situation in which he frightens a women picking
