In the story “ Seventh Grade,” by Gary Soto , Victor, the main character was embarrassed because he does things he doesn’t usually do. Victor also learns tough love in seventh grade. One of the things Victor learns through trial and error happens when he and his friend, Michael , are in the lunchroom eating. Victor notices Michael Michael is making a weird face. “How come you’re making a face?” asked Victor. Michael replies ,“I ain’t making a face, ese. This is my face.” Then Victor was remembers that “he had read a GQ magazine that his older brother had borrowed from the Book Mobile and noticed that the male models all had the same look on their faces. They would stand, one arm around a beautiful woman, and scowl. They would sit at
a pool, their rippled stomachs dark with shadow, and scowl. They would sit at dinner tables, cool drinks in their hands, and scowl.” After Victor thought about this he also tried “The scowl”, and some girls looked at him weird. Therefore Victor learned his lesson to not try to be someone you’re not and be yourself around people. Another thing that Victor learned is not say you know how to do something if you really don’t. After lunch Victor had French class with his crush, Teressa. Mr. Buller, the French teacher, asked the class ”Does anyone know any French?” Victor shot his hand up. He knew that it was so stupid of him to do that. “Frenchie oh wewe gee in September,” said Victor with a river of nervous sweat ran down his palms. Now Victor is truly embarrassed, because he said he knew French when he really didn’t. Now Victor is probably thinking to always be yourself.
When we feel the need to change outward appearance we need to be concerned and aware of how those changes effect the person we are within as we are about appearance. External beauty is not as attractive if the person inside is not the type of person we would want to be with. Appearance can be initially blinding and deceptive. When you being to look beyond the outer layers of appearance and into the character of the person you are relating to you can quickly find the beauty alone is not enough to sustain a meaningful relationship. Beauty can fade and appearance change as we grow older but who we are at the core should remain constant or improve with age and wisdom. Kit Reed’s story shows the high cost of how focusing only on your outer appearance to the detriment of the person you are can
On Saturday, September 9th, 2017, at 2034 hours, I was dispatched to 3217 Grouper Rd in reference to a domestic violence incident that had just occurred.
In the article “Beating Anorexia and Ganing Feminism,” Marni Grossman shares her experiance of how she overcame her struggle with anorexia through understanding the feminist movement. Marni objectafies the ways in which society’s expectations and ideas of what it means to have “beauty” is having and negitaive impact. I had a very similar experiance to Marni, in fact the first time I hated my apperance was in the seventh grade. I have olive skin and bold brows, features which i was often complamented on, yet hated. Shawn and Lee argue that “there is no fixed idea of beauty”, suggesting how social ideals from society differs depending on the culture (183). I remember A male student was bullying all the females in the class by Inscribing Gender

The story about Tempie Herndon Durham was published by a man named Travis Jordan. The story is derived from the North Carolina Narratives on slavery. The narrative was published in North Carolina’s third district, which is located near the Outer Banks. This source paints of vivid picture of what plantations looked like and an insight to what a marriage looked like back in the 1930’s for slaves. Tempie describes her wedding from the gown all the wayt to the who attended her wedding. She married a man by the name of Exter Durham, who belonged to Marse Snipes Durham. Tempie was 103 years old when she wrote her narrative. Her memory of her marriage and the plantation she lived on has remained very close to her. I believe Tempie wanted to share
In the story,” Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, Victor learns that his embarrassing moments lead to bad things. In paragraph number 18 and 19 it states that Teresa, the girl victor likes, smiles at him and says hi and victor says yeah that’s me back to her. This proves of how Victor got embarrassed because he should of said something different back like hi or hey. This is why he embarrassed himself in front of Teresa. In the paragraphs 36 through 60, Victor embarrasses himself by trying to speak french to empress Teresa but it sounds like he is speaking gibberish. This shows that he is embarrassing himself by acting like he can speak french, but only the teacher knows that isn’t real french. Victor now knows that he shouldn’t raise his hand and tries
This book is filled with many different stories from many different characters, such as Angel, Alma, and Alex. Angel is the smallest kid in his family, and he has a big brother named Weasel. Weasel always plays tricks on Angel, and Angel hates it. One day while Angel was taking a shower Weasel came out of nowhere and took a picture of Angel in the shower, at least Angel covered his body with the shower curtains. Weasel threated Angel to give him 20 dollars or else he’ll show the picture to every girl in Angel’s school Angel was really worried. Angel tried to get the photo away from him but there was no chance, but finally he came up with an idea. Angel took a naked baby picture of Weasel and threated him back, Weasel didn’t really care instead he made Angel do all of his chores, even pulling his dad’s weeds. After Angel’s dad came home Angel ran to him and said everything, but instead Weasel being mad at him he gave Angel his picture back and they got along. Alma loved to go to trick-or-treating she had the best costumes ever; she loved the smell of candy on a Halloween nights. Alma...

Autobiography of a Face follows the story of Lucy Grealy, who as a child was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer leading to the removal of part of her jaw. With the damage to her face conspicuous to the rest of the world, Grealy struggles with her concepts of beauty and strength in the face of adversity. ”Assessment of the employee’s appearance is directly tied to the probability of getting employed” (Mahajan, 167) The society’s standards for beauty are even being drilled into the minds of young children. For example, Disney films, especially involving princesses are teaching both boys and girls false expectations of what society expects of them. For boys, Disney is saying that they have to be handsome, brave, and strong and they ultimate goal is to save the princess. For girls, Disney is claiming that being super skinny, having perfect hair, and having a flawless face make a woman attractive. If kids do not fit in those standards they can become victims of bully. For instance, Lady Gaga was bullied at school for being ugly and Steven Spielberg for not fitting in (Horner 1). “I had admired the perfect forms of my cottagers -- their grace, beauty, and delicate complexions: but how was I terrified when I viewed myself in a transparent pool! At first I started back, unable to believe that it was indeed I who was reflected in the mirror; and when I became fully convinced that I was in reality the monster that I am” (Shelly 116). When the creature looks at himself through his reflection, he realizes for the first that he is different from everybody else. He becomes jealous of the cottagers beauty and understands that his horrific appearance is causing people to be terrified of him. Although he is intelligent like a human, he is trapped inside a monster’s body
As the practice is becoming increasingly popular, mainstream acceptance has given birth to a society that values appearance over ability and ultimately leading on to discrimination in practically every field. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that indicates that appearance has become a vital contributor of success at the workplace and even in educational institutions for that matter. A study by researchers from Rice University and the University of Houston indicated that candidates with facial scars and blemishes faced lower odds of being remembered by their interviewers which lowered their ratings and evaluations (as cited in ...
It was about one-thirty in the morning in the town of Homestead Michigan. The almost florescent light of the moon bouncing off the fresh puddles that covered the ground. The grass and trees were covered in a thin layer of water causing every little beam of light to reflect back up. Anyone who may have been outside at this time would have without double, smelled the mix of fresh dirt and night crawlers. As the moonlight started to fade away through the cloud cover, three buses made there way through the streets and parked in front of HHS, the local high school.
