Gang violence has been an issue within the United States since the colonization in the late 1400s. Although gang violence has always been around, larger more organized factions began arising in the 17th century. Today, according to youthinfo.gov more than 700,000 youth were treated in the ER for gang related incidents. While many actions have been taken against gang related, not all seem effective. While very interesting on how people are drawn into gangs, our government must implement more strict measurements against the clans of hooligans. The mafia first developed in the 1600s, when these citizens did not want to cooperate with authorities. (Hoover) Hispanic and African American gangs started increasing in California in 1955-1965. (Hoover) The gangs in California, mainly operated in Compton and central Los Angeles. (Hoover) The ages of people in gangs ranged from fourteen, to twenty when they first started. In the 1970s, the ages increased to twelve, to twenty-four. (Hoover) Women in gangs did not do much. Mainly, they were just girlfriends of gang members. Sometimes, women would fight other women from different gangs. (Hoover) African American gangs started in the 1920s, but they were not violent. These factions weren’t territorial and were unorganized. (Hoover) Families and family friends were usually the ones that were associated with these gangs. (Hoover) African American gangs started to become violent in the late 1960s when the Crips and Bloods formed. (Hoover) The Crips and Bloods were the two most violent gangs. (Hoover) The Crips were the most feared gang because of their reputation of armed robberies and because they terrorized schools and neighborhoods.
