This chapter explores the importance of regulatory systems and social impacts made on gambling within Canada and other countries. The topic that I chose to cover within the chapter is the comparison amongst Canada, United States, Great Britain and Australia. I found three creditable and great sources explaining how gambling works within these countries. I learned that the federal government abandoned its lottery operations and granted it to the provincial governments; that includes all lottery, slots, horse track racing, etc. Provinces make so much money off of gambling that the governments do not take into concern the amount of gambling addictions adults get into. Canada runs by four regulatory models: charity model, hybrid model, Provincial Crown Corporations, and Contractual Arrangements (Smith, 2013).
The charity model states that any person can run a charity, but as long as they receive a license from the government. The hybrid model points out that private sectors can run casinos/gambling, but all that money must go to the government. In Australia, electronic gaming machines are owned but it can be run in private facilities. The Australian government takes 15% of the winnings that these businesses make from electronic gaming machines, but other types of gambling, businesses will not be taxed on because it is a recreational activity/ hobby. (Delfabbro & King, 2011). The United States allows the states to regulate the taxing laws on winnings from casinos. Great Britain is the only nation with having the national government regulate and make policies on gambling (Brutch 2010, Larson, 2010).
