For years casino gambling was portrayed in the media and Hollywood as being associated with criminal activities and the mafia. Now with proper scrutiny and government regulations casino gambling has become a lucrative business, with casinos stock even trading on Wall Street. Casino gambling is an ever increasingly popular and legal activity in many states throughout the United States. “The term gambling or ‘gaming’ as the industry calls it, means any legalized form of wagering or betting conducted in a casino, on a riverboat, on an Indian reservation, or at any other location under the jurisdiction of the United States” (National Gambling Impact Study Commission Act). States that allow casino gambling benefit vastly by re-incorporating the taxation off of commerce gained from casinos and tourism associated with the casinos back into the state and local communities. Jobs created by casinos also have a positive impact on the economy in local communities surrounding casinos as well as, the states that legalize gambling. Texas, while allowing horse and dog racing, lottery, and charitable bingo, does not currently prohibit casino gambling. In this essay, I will provide the different reasons the State of Texas will benefit from legalizing casinos gambling. By not having casinos, Texas continues to lose valuable tax revenue that could be awarded to state and local government funded programs for example, education, public safety, economic development, and infrastructure improvements. With the increasing number of legal casinos in bordering states such as Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, the loss of tourism and tax revenue is a growing concern for Texas. Passing legislation to allow casinos in the State of Texas will help fund ... ... middle of paper ... ... the overall increase in commerce. The benefits will also be felt through the decline in poverty and welfare by way of incorporating new jobs and revenue into the state. The State of Texas must put an end to all of the money being spent elsewhere while Texas has the capabilities and resources available to provide and profit off the same gambling experience other states provide. It has been shown through numerous states that legalized casino gambling can be a rewarding business model, just as The Lottery, pari-mutuel wagering at horse and dog tracks, and charitable bingo has proved in Texas. Due to the current state of the economy it seems to me the only logical point of view is to bring Texans home, by legalizing casino gambling in Texas, recapturing vital commerce that will help lead to financial prosperity thus, enriching The State of Texas and its residents.
...ve their advantage and disadvantage in regards their tax system; however, we can see that the state of Texas needs to find a better system to growth its tax revenue, they need to move to a progressive system, where there is a charge for income tax, but by putting a margin were only certain brackets pay the tax, and live exempt the people who makes $30,000.00 or less. This will improve the amount of income for the state, to help suicide certain causes, such as The Education system, Medicaid, and also help the Department of Transportation to pay old debts due to the construction and maintenance of new roads. This will help to stop the plan of considering bringing international companies to build new roads with the commitment of paying toll during the next fifty years, which is only going to benefit the private company, but not any changes in the revenue of the state.
While analyzing through T.H Breen 's “Horses and Gentlemen: The Cultural Significance of Gambling among the Gentry of Virginia”, multiple aspects are established about the background of the particular gentry and also the significance of the leisure activities they participated in. When describing the colony, the people were made up of higher class individuals and mostly shared the same beliefs. The main cause of these actions fascinated Breen, and his article goes to answer why they found pleasure in such activities. Therefore, he then came to the concept that the gentry idolized two forms of living, materialism and individualism, both which possibly lead into the gambling behavior. I too agree with his observations of the colony and the idea that the leisure activities do portray a deeper sense of who they were.
The second threat is many states are legalizing or planning to legalize commercial casino gambling. Unlike Native American casinos commercial casinos turn over a large share of their profit to the cities and states in taxes.
Gambling is a controversial topic that causes many arguments for and against making a wager for any reason. The lottery has been a welcomed form of gambling in Texas since 1992, it is one of the biggest legalized forms of gambling in Texas. Although many citizens question, should all forms of gambling be legalized as a means to support public education? It should not be legalized because, expanding gambling to generate funds for education could negatively impact the social welfare of individuals and families. Also legalizing all forms of gambling could increase gambling addiction, and exploit the economically disadvantaged.
To reiterate, the current tax system is thought to be regressive because the tax system does not provide a balance for those with high income and those with low; however, this can be fixed by adopting some aspects of a state with progressive features. For instance, the state of California as a much better tax system than Texas because they have a “graduated personal income tax structure and provides personal income tax credits in place of personal and dependent exemptions” (“California”). If Texas adopted these two characteristics into their tax system this will began to progress because some of the faults in the present Texas tax system is the lack of personal income tax structure and it does not not provide tax credits to low-income taxpayers to offset other expenses. Making these few changes will help Texas greatly; however, making this change will be difficult because the state is comfortable with the tax system they have. Texas does not care to alter the tax system much because although it is weak, it does not take too much away from the overall economic success the state
As a resident of the state of Texas, I’d like to raise awareness an issue that affects our entire country, yet can be resolved by changing many of the regulations in our own state. This issue is the legalization of marijuana; specifically, the legalization of recreational use. In the past you’ve openly supported the rights of the states to control their own laws in regards to things like marijuana use, but opposed to the idea of ever voting for it should it appear on Texas ballots. However, I will explain how it’s in the best interest of your state, and the nation to start thinking otherwise.
New Orleans, LA, Mobile, AL, Gulfport, MS, and Biloxi, MS are all flourishing cities built upon their population, economy, and attractions. The high population of each city is based upon their attractions. The most toured attraction of each city are their casinos. BLANK casinos were in New Orleans. BLANK casinos occupied Mobile. BLANK casinos were in Gulfport, and more than BLANK casinos bordered the shores of Biloxi. Between the years of 2000 and 2004, every one of these casinos contributed to billions of dollars in state tax revenue. Casinos practically kept the economy running
Las Vegas also it is familiar as “Sin City,” is one of the most famous tourist place in the world. It is an incredible place in the middle of dessert, it is a city established from nothing to something great. Vegas has developed in tourism and population as well to become beyond universal. Las Vegas has ranked the fastest-growing state, according to the Las Vegas review journal, “Nevada ranked as the nation’s two fastest-growing states over the past year, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for 2016 released Tuesday.” Las Vegas is known as a gambling city, nightclubs and casinos. Gambling plays a big role in many Nevadans Lifestyles. This is such a problem that should be considered. In this essay I will discuss about how gambling has a big effect on Nevadans lifestyle, plus how to avoid being addictive to gambling. In Las Vegas there are stereotypes of gambling, such as Lottery, slot machines, cards, and many others. But in this essay I will only discuss on slot machines.
The Great Transformation From A Casino City To a Resort Destination Atlantic City is the place to gamble on the East Coast. Although this may initially seem to be a positive characteristic, it is evident that this destination has the capability to be so much more than it already is. This point of interest has the world’s first boardwalk, which opened in 1881, has 4 miles of hotels, amusements, and casinos. Atlantic City was originally a resort town, until 1978, when it changed into a gaming city. This popular day-trip destination had over 34 million visitors in 1998 alone. Despite this amazing statistic, along with the revenue that gambling brings in, many steps are being taken in order to further promote the expansion of this great city. The renovations and improvements being made to the Atlantic City Convention Center are already increasing the amount of money coming in. There is a great deal of other things to focus on in the Atlantic City region. In endorsing local attractions in this scenic area, and in shifting the target market of this spot, this city would change back into a resort destination. When most people think of Atlantic City, the first thing that comes to mind is the casino attractions that are available. With the city’s constant shuffle and excitement, gamblers from all over go there dreaming of a big win. Many people consider Atlantic City to be the “Las Vegas of the East Coast”. There are over 12 casinos, with one building as magnificent as the next. At any given second of the day, these hopefuls may have their lives changed in an instant with just one win. These casino hotels gain most of their income from gamblers. Casinos employ almost 49,000 people every year. This number should actually jump when the Marina District opens. Although Atlantic City prospers as a gambler’s paradise, many would love to show others just how much more Atlantic City really has to offer its tourists. The Atlantic City Convention Center, built in 1929, was renovated with $72 million in 1997. With the world’s largest pipe organ, everyone from the Beatles to Pavarotti has played there. It was designated a historic landmark in 1987. Conventions, trade shows, meetings, and public events of the greater Atlantic City area all take place here. When the renovation is finally completed, it will seat up to 12,000 people for special events.
In the middle of a Las Vegas casino a secret garden waits to be explored. Over fifteen thousand people each day visit the Bellagio Conservatory inside the Bellagio Hotel and Casino; whether it is the first visit or one of many there is always something new to discover. The entrance is a tunnel through two twenty gallon aquariums filled with Clown Fish, Yellow Tang, Fiji Devil, and Heninochus. You may recognize some of them from Finding Nemo! The floors and ceiling through the tank are LED images of fish, showcasing lights that Vegas is famous for.
Gambling... Who does not like to gamble? People play lotteries, bet on sport games or try their luck on slot machines with a thought to win some amount of money. In fact, this excitement for gambling can be seen even from early ages; for example, ancient Egyptians used to play dice in 2000 BC or the first casinos opened their doors to customers during the Greeco-Roman period ( Whittaker and Cushman 1 ). Nowadays casino industry is a large business in the United States that brings high revenues and offers various entertainment that attracts people from different areas. So just recently residents and visitors of Worcester, Wicomico and surrounding counties got a great opportunity to try themselves in a new Ocean Downs casino that came into operation couple months ago. Ocean Downs casino is an excellent benefit to the community that helps to improve the economic and social status of the county and also serves as a great entertainment for the adult population.
“Problem gambling, also known as gambling addiction or compulsive gambling, is defined as the urge to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop” (Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance 2015). Karen Frazier states, nearly 3 percent or 6 million adults and 500,000 teens meet the criteria for problem gambling (Frazier, 2015). Legalized Gambling has many positive aspects, and it should be noted that though a large number of citizens are considered “problem gamblers,” the majority of the population gambles causally and in moderation.
The Gambling industry attempts to win support with misleading information in its promotions. For example, gambling is said to help stimulate the economy by providing more jobs. According to the American Gaming Association study, "In 1995, the casino industry recorded $25 billion . . . and paid only $7 billion in wages" (Arthur Anderson). Also according to Maura J. Casey, there is high unemployment rates around casinos. (Casey 37) With people's losses and by encouraging workers to believe in cheating customers, casinos focus on gaining more and more money for their n...
Gambling is described as the betting of money or property on the result of an event or game that is mainly random with the desire to win more money or gain additional property. The industry or sector created by the activity of legal gambling is referred to as gaming. Since inception, gambling and gaming has continued to develop to an extent that it worth more than $335 billion across the globe. Most of the revenues obtained in this industry are generated by casinos and lotteries. In the past few years, gambling and gaming have attracted significant concern and controversy, especially with regards to the morality of the practice and whether its financial benefits outweigh the damage. While proponents of gambling
I think that if the three solutions I provided are carried out, it will make a great impact on the rising gambling addiction rate. Spending extra revenue from states that have legalized gambling to fund enough addiction clinics and programs to meet each state’s need is the first step toward decreasing addiction rates. The second step is voting to pass more ordinance and restriction laws so the gambling industry will not expand out of control and children will not have easy access to gambling machines. I think if “we” as a community work together toward getting our state government to adopt the ideas in the solutions I provided, we can set an example for other communities and in the future lower addiction rates instead of quietly allowing them to increase.
