If you were to ask yourself when the last time you saw a photograph or even just an image, your answer would most likely be ‘just a few seconds ago.’ The reality is just that, you see images all day, every day.
Photographs have become an important aspect of life in the past, present and future. They represent a specific moment at a specific time and because of this we are provided with a way to visually see our ancestor’s appearance, accomplishments and developments. (Jenny Carew 1981). This essay discusses three major points in relation to past, present and future of photography. The first point is how the history of photographs developed people’s own perception of the world. The future of photography will be shaped the same way that the past shaped photography today. Images act projectively in the sense that they go ahead of their realisation (Tristian Schultz, Week 6 lecture). Photographs are a way of acting reflectively and through this, they can transform. The past is going to impact on where the future of photography is headed, whether positive or negative. However, from the way photographs have developed to this day, it is likely that they will continue down the same path. Eventually, it will be nearly impossible to know whether the photograph is authentic or whether it has been manipulated. The world we live it will be questioned along with everything in it. Photographs have influenced the world in so many ways that they are now so many ways in which to view and capture the world. Another concern is that, now with the creation of high resolution video it threatens to destroy photographs. High resolution video capture a moment in time just like a photograph but instead of be ‘frozen’ is a moving picture. You can film a particular moment exact as you see it, just through a lens. This being that with newer print imaging and technologies, the preservation of photograph will be extraordinary. With more advanced technologies, the greater photographs will be. It will even more ways to use photographs to represent the world. “Overall there is very good reason to be optimistic about the future of both the appreciation of photography, and of photograph preservation.
