Moving is rarely easy for anyone, but immigrating to a new country, one of which that person is unfamiliar with the common language, is often much harder. In Iranian immigrant Firooseh Dumas’ memoir, Funny in Farsi, she allows us to see and understand her first perception of America. In her puerile yet humorous documentation of her first experience in the United States, Dumas brings her personal story to life by establishing a sardonic tone, and using varied diction and syntax throughout. In Funny in Farsi, Dumas varies her diction depending on whether she wants to come across as informative and serious, or maintain the sardonicism that is prevalent throughout. mother and she came to be lost, the author says, “She and I wandered aimlessly, perhaps hoping for a shooting star or a talking animal to help guide us back.” (Page 13, paragraph 11, lines 4 and 5). The author is not being literal, meaning that she does not really expect a talking animal to help them find their house. Instead, the author is mildly ridiculing herself and her mother to add humor to her story. Continuing on the topic of the author’s diction, it is noticeable that Dumas’ word choice tends to run in line with her intentions.
For example, then the author intends a sentence or paragraph to come across as humorous, she makes her sentences short and abrupt. At the same time, she increases her vocabulary to include words that are unusual or relatively uncommon, such as perhaps, predicament, grossly, and pondering. On the other hand, when Dumas’ intends her writing to be taken seriously, or at least when the subject at hand is meant to be only somewhat funny, her sentences lengthen and her vocabulary becomes somewhat simpler. For example, the language used when the author states, “Before her marriage, my mother, Nazireh, had dreamed of becoming a midwife…My mother planned to obtain her diploma, then go to Tabriz to learn midwifery from a teacher whom my grandfather knew. Sadly, the teacher died unexpectedly, and my mother’s dreams had to be buried as well.” (Page 12, paragraph 7, lines 4 through 9), is simpler than when she says, “As we stood pondering our predicament, an enthusiastic young girl came...and said something.” The author’s word choice and phrasing patterns make it easier to conclude whether or not she is trying to be funny, or is trying to educate us in a more formal, black-and-white
manner.
South Park is an animated TV series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, which first aired on Comedy Central in 1997. The show features four boys Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenny McCormick. South Park has been seen as one of the most controversial shows due to its raunchy humor and obscene depiction of characters in the show. The writings of Amy Tan and Richard Rodriguez’s depicts a bilingual story based on two differing culture. On Mother Tongue, “Tan explores the effect of her mother’s “broken” English on her life and writing” (506). On the other hand, Richard Rodriguez “recounts the origin of his complex views of bilingual education through Public and Private Language” (512). From a child’s eyes, Tan and Rodriguez describe each joys and pain growing up in a non-English speaking family. Hence, may be viewed that cultural differences plays a major role on how one handles adversities.
Funny In Farsi: written by Firoozeh Dumas is a memoir about an Iranian girl that came to America with her family, where they settled in Southern California. Throughout the story, the author shares stories about herself and what it was like to grow up in the United States. Out of many books, this one explains what it means to be an American from the author's perspective using her own experiences and comparisons. Her father Kazem is a very optimistic, encouraging, and clever man that raised his children to be kind-hearted and goal oriented; especially his daughter, Firoozeh.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you moved to America from a different country? In both Of Beetles and Angels and Funny in Farsi you read about two different authors who moved to America from other countries using different perspectives, purposes, and strategies in their text. First, in Of Beetles and Angels, author Mawi Asgedom uses his parents’ advice after moving to America through reflection. And second, in Funny in Farsi, author Firoozeh Dumas comically deals with the constant interviewing through humor and sarcasm when she too moved to the “land of opportunity”. Within these two memoirs both authors use different strategies to convey their unique purposes and perspectives in their text.
David Sedaris, an American author from New York, in his piece “Me Talk Pretty One Day” uses humor and exaggeration to explore what it means to learn a foreign language. His piece transports us to a French course in France taught by a draconian woman. Sedaris uses many devices, particularly anti-climax and hyperbole to hook the reader to his storyline while also conveying his cardinal message. His carefully chosen literary devices effectively teach us about persistence and challenging our comfort zones through his traumatic and often humorous horror stories of being yelled at, and verbally abused by the “wild animal.”
In Conclusion, the book Home of the Brave reflects Kek’s simple way of learning and adapting to a new language, culture, and experiences. From the content above, it is proven that Kek is lost between his identities and wants to be American in the same time. This is a very sensitive narration that covers most of the issues faced by new migrants from developing countries; from misinterpretation of appliances, to the hardships to learn English, and finally, racism.
Language is an important part of who we are. It influences the way we think and behave on a great scale. However, sometimes it is forced upon us to go in different directions just so we can physically and mentally feel as if we belong to the society in which we live in. Just as we see in Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” and Richard Rodriguez’s “A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood”, both authors faced some challenges along the way by coping with two different languages, while still trying to achieve the social position which they desired.
In “My Two Lives”, Jhumpa Lahiri tells of her complicated upbringing in Rhode Island with her Calcutta born-and-raised parents, in which she continually sought a balance between both her Indian and American sides. She explains how she differs from her parents due to immigration, the existent connections to India, and her development as a writer of Indian-American stories. “The Freedom of the Inbetween” written by Sally Dalton-Brown explores the state of limbo, or “being between cultures”, which can make second-generation immigrants feel liberated, or vice versa, trapped within the two (333). This work also discusses how Lahiri writes about her life experiences through her own characters in her books. Humor can come in many different forms. Many people are aware of the blatant humor of slapstick, but it takes a keener mind to notice the subtle detail in sarcasm or satire. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift was able to create a piece of literature addressing the faults of the Irish culture while embedding in a humorous essay. Swift’s satire allows for the gravity of the Irish standings to be exploited under the disguise of a proposal for economic benefit.
In the work of Amy Tan’s “Mother’s Tongue” she provides a look into how she adapted her language to assimilate into American culture. She made changes to her language because her mother heavily relied on her for translation. She was the voice of her mother, relaying information in standard English to those who were unable to understand her mother’s broken english. She tells about her mother’s broken english and its impact on her communication to those outside their culture. Her mothers broken english limited others’ perception of her intelligence, and even her own perception of her mother was scewed: Tan said, “I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mothers ‘limited’ English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. English is an invisible gate. Immigrants are the outsiders. And native speakers are the gatekeepers. Whether the gate is wide open to welcome the broken English speakers depends on their perceptions. Sadly, most of the times, the gate is shut tight, like the case of Tan’s mother as she discusses in her essay, "the mother tongue." People treat her mother with attitudes because of her improper English before they get to know her. Tan sympathizes for her mother as well as other immigrants. Tan, once embarrassed by her mother, now begins her writing journal through a brand-new kaleidoscope. She sees the beauty behind the "broken" English, even though it is different. Tan combines repetition, cause and effect, and exemplification to emphasize her belief that there are more than one proper way (proper English) to communicate with each other. Tan hopes her audience to understand that the power of language- “the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth”- purposes to connect societies, cultures, and individuals, rather than to rank our intelligence.
Tan’s essay does more than just illuminate the trouble with language variations; her essay features a story of perseverance, a story of making a “problem” harmonize into a “normal” life. Almost like a how-to, Tan’s essay describes an obstacle and what it takes to go above and beyond. Mirroring Tan, I have been able to assimilate “the [world] that helped shape the way I saw things” and the world that I had to conform to (Tan 129). Life is a struggle, but what makes it worth it is the climb, not what is on the other side.
In the essay “Mother Tongue” Amy Tan, the author, gives a different, a more upbeat outlook on the various forms of English that immigrants speak as they adapt to the American culture. Using simple language to develop her argument, she casually communicates to the audience rather than informing which helps the audience understand what is being presented at ease. Her mother plays an important role in her outlook of language, because she helps her realize that language not only allows one to be a part of a culture but create one’s identity in society. Cheech Marin’s film, Born in East L.A., spotlights many key issues brought upon mainly by immigration. This comedic production hits the hearts to many because while it may be humorous, it is also a reality to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and so it hits close to home to many. Immigration is the main topic of this motion picture, but I want to focus on one subdivision of it only; language. The linguistic barriers in between a border is evident in the movie and especially a reality in our world.
