To be or not to be? That is the question of the day. To be or not to be, would you be willing to risk it all, even yourself? Would you be able to fight every obstacle, even if it means going against your family’s values just for a person you deeply love? Will you be naive enough to hope for a better outcome despite the flawed choices you made? That is exactly what happened in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In this play, 2 young star-crossed lovers fight for their love that inevitably hurts them in the process leading to their tragic deaths. But who on earth caused this tragedy? Romeo and Friar Lawrence are both at fault for the tragedy of Juliet and Romeo’s death because Romeo’s impulsive actions and Friar's flawed judgements deeply affected both the young lovers' fate. His impulsive decision is evident when he instructs the nurse, “Bid her advice/ Some means to come shrift this afternoon,/And there she shall at Friar Lawrence’ cell/ Be shriv’d and married./ Here is for thy pains” (2.4.163 - 166). This quotation expresses Romeo's impatience and urgency to marry Juliet, despite Juliet being a member of his family’s sworn enemy. More of his impulsiveness was highlighted when Friar Lawrence warns him to take it slow, stating, “wisely and slow, thy stumble that run fast”(2.3.94). Despite this advice from Friar Lawrence, Romeo ignored the warning and allowed his love for Juliet to overrule his judgements and once again, ignored the harm his actions could bring to Juliet, his family, or Juliet’s family. Furthermore, Juliet tells Romeo in Act 2, Scene 2 that she is worried about the possible outcomes of their love and expresses her concerns to Romeo in Act 2, Scene 2. She tells him, “I have no joy in this tonight./ It is too rash, too unadvis’d, too sudden,/ Too like lightning, which doth cease to be,/ Ere one can say ’it lightens’. Sweet goodnight”
