To be or not to be? That is the question of the day. To be or not to be, would you be willing to risk it all, even yourself? Would you be able to fight every obstacle, even if it means going against your family’s values just for a person you deeply love? Will you be naive enough to hope for a better outcome despite the flawed choices you made? That is exactly what happened in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In this play, 2 young star-crossed lovers fight for their love that inevitably hurts them in the process leading to their tragic deaths. But who on earth caused this tragedy? Romeo and Friar Lawrence are both at fault for the tragedy of Juliet and Romeo’s death because Romeo’s impulsive actions and Friar's flawed judgements deeply affected both the young lovers' fate. Throughout the play, Romeo displayed a …show more content…
His impulsive decision is evident when he instructs the nurse, “Bid her advice/ Some means to come shrift this afternoon,/And there she shall at Friar Lawrence’ cell/ Be shriv’d and married./ Here is for thy pains” (2.4.163 - 166). This quotation expresses Romeo's impatience and urgency to marry Juliet, despite Juliet being a member of his family’s sworn enemy. More of his impulsiveness was highlighted when Friar Lawrence warns him to take it slow, stating, “wisely and slow, thy stumble that run fast”(2.3.94). Despite this advice from Friar Lawrence, Romeo ignored the warning and allowed his love for Juliet to overrule his judgements and once again, ignored the harm his actions could bring to Juliet, his family, or Juliet’s family. Furthermore, Juliet tells Romeo in Act 2, Scene 2 that she is worried about the possible outcomes of their love and expresses her concerns to Romeo in Act 2, Scene 2. She tells him, “I have no joy in this tonight./ It is too rash, too unadvis’d, too sudden,/ Too like lightning, which doth cease to be,/ Ere one can say ’it lightens’. Sweet goodnight”
"Romeo and Juliet," a famous love story about two star-crossed lovers who take their lives in order to be together. Friar Lawrence in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "We still have known thee for a holy man"
Friar Lawrence is perhaps one of the most ambiguous characters in Romeo and Juliet. A quick Google search for “Friar Lawrence character analysis” would only affirm that fact. The Friar “advances the plot with his wisdom and religious powers” (Castanalysis.com), yet “he is the most scheming and political of characters in the play” (Sparknotes.com). How innocent was he in the destruction of young Montague and Capulet, and what kind of a personality did he truly have?
The story of Romeo and Juliet was filled with a tragedy caused by two feuding families with an end of death. But could the fatal demise of these two been averted if one character had played a better part. This character is Friar Lawrence a man of the church renowned for his power of healing. When the lovers turned to him he married them, gave both advice in their ties of need and supplied a plan to bring them back together. But was the Friar responsible for such a crime and when they both lay dead was the blood on his hands.
We first see him in Act 2 Scene 3 where he is talking about plants and
Had Friar Lawrence not been involed with Romeos and Juliets decisions the story may not have had a tragic ending. In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence should be blamed for the death of the two main characters. The first mistake Friar Lawrence does, is secretly marrying the two lovers with out the parents consent right after romeo had just loved his "perfect" Rosaline. Then, he agrees, to the Capulet’s, to marry Paris and Juliet. Lastly, the worst mistake was he giving Juliet the sleeping potion. All of his actions combined lead to the main character’s suicidal action.
In reading critical analysis of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" I found that many people call Friar Lawrence a moderate man who elicits to others his voice of wisdom and reason. An example of this sort of conclusion is George Ian Duthie's opinion that Lawrence is "A very worthy man", "prudent" and "worldly-wise"(xix.xx). G.B. Harrison views him as "sympathetically treated", "wise, grave, patient"(6). Due to this continuing interpretation, the view of Friar Lawrence has not really changed through the years. Mutschman and Wentersdorf followed the herd when they stated in their book that

A hero is described as someone who, in the opinion of others, has "special qualities and is perceived as a role model.” In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Friar Lawrence fits this definition of a hero. Friar Lawrence is a selfless character who is always trying to help others and make people happy. In the play, the Friar does heroic acts, such as marrying Romeo and Juliet and by doing that hoping to end the feud between the Capulet and Montague families. Also, he comes up with a plan for Juliet not to kill herself and have her escape to be with Romeo, and finally he admits to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. All three of these deeds deem The Friar as the hero in Romeo and Juliet. The author, William Shakespeare uses literary
Friar Laurence is to blame for the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet. “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is a play about two loves destined for each other but unable to be together due to family feuds. Their priest decides to marry the two lovers without either family knowing, all while knowing himself that it would only cause more problems than it could fix. Friar Laurence is at fault for the death of Romeo, and Juliet because he knew about the possible consequences but ignored them, was a reckless advisor to Romeo, and didn’t complete his already shaky plan. Friar Laurence knew about the possible consequences of marrying Romeo and Juliet and even said it, but didn’t do anything about that information.
Friar Lawrence once said, "May the heavens be happy with this holy act of marriage, so nothing unfortunate happens later to make us regret it." Friar Lawrence was foreshadowing that something bad was going to happen with this marriage. Based on this information, we can see how optimistic and irresponsible Friar Lawrence is, which led to the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet, but Tybalt and Romeo himself also played a big role in leading to the deaths because of how naive they are. Friar Lawrence, during almost any scene, was looking on the bright side, never seeing how absolutely everything could go wrong. And Romeo never thought anything through.
Often in a haste people move at a pace without considering the place they're in and causing waves of problems and soon you could find yourself in a daze not knowing how to face the case you're in. In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet it shows us how when people move without thinking and processing the situation there they could cause more problems to arise and it could end up badly for the person and also having stress upon your shoulders. Although many may blame Capulet for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet (counter-reason), what is more important is that Friar Lawrence and Romeo are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because they were unable to think through the process which caused more reckless action towards them because they never stopped to think about the
In Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence has a major role. As a member of the Order of St. Francis, a group of wise and generous priests, Romeo and Juliet trusted Friar Laurence completely, turning to him for advice, and solutions. He was there throughout Romeo’s and Juliet's lives; he married them, came up with a plan to keep them together, and was a friend throughout their tragedies. However, Friar Laurence’s rash action in marrying Romeo and Juliet, his shortsighted plan for rescuing Juliet from an unwanted marriage to Paris, and his fear of committing sin all contributed to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
