Ivy Tharp Mrs. Heun 5th 17 April 2024 Friar Lawrence's Flaws William Shakespeare once said, “Even the noblest intentions can unravel through the threads of human error.” In Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence still has numerous flaws despite his good intentions. Friar Lawrence's poor personality traits and numerous mistakes make him flawed as a friar in Romeo and Juliet. To start, Friar Lawrence’s poor personality traits that he portrays are flaws in the play Romeo and Juliet. One personality trait that the friar portrays is that he is a hypocrite (Silka). He is a hypocrite because he fails to follow his own words and advice. Lastly, Friar Lawrence portrays a troublesome personality trait throughout Romeo and Juliet (Brenner 69). One reason why he is troublesome is because he uses herbs for deceitful purposes in the book. Also, Friar Lawrence secretly marries Romeo and Juliet without permission from their parents, causing trouble for both houses (70-71). These negative personality traits Friar Lawrence portrays are all flaws in Romeo and Juliet. In addition to Friar Lawrence portraying poor personality traits, he also causes numerous mistakes throughout Romeo and Juliet, resulting in mass destruction. One of the friar’s numerous mistakes is that he provides Juliet with the potion that would cause her to fake her own death (Brenner 69). This mistake is essential to the play’s plot because everyone in the Capulet family believes that Juliet has died. It also caused immense devastation in Juliet's family, the Capulets (69).
