The Death of Romeo & Juliet can be blamed on many different individuals, but Friar Lawrence is the most responsible for the tragedy. He initially gave Juliet the death potion, he also didn’t get the letter about Juliet to Romeo in time, and he kept all of this secret from both of the families. First off, Juliet was fine until her family pressured her to marry. They suggested paris; a young loyal man, ready for love. She refused and then ran off to Friar Lawrence. Once she met with him, he suggested that she should take a potion of his and drink it. “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilling liquor drink thou off; when presently through all thy veins shall run a cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse…”(4.1.93-97) In the quote are the very words Friar Lawrence spoke. He described that the potion would make her veins run cold and that she would have no pulse; also known as death. She fell into a deep sleep and it convinced all of her family that she was dead. As the news spread quickly Friar Lawrence wanted to send a letter to Romeo, explaining the scheme. “‘I could not send it - here it is again - nor get a messenger to bring it thee, so fearful were they of infection.’ -Friar John ‘unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice, but full of charge’ -Friar Lawrence” (5.1.13-17). This was the scene where Friar John gave the letter back to Friar Lawrence because no one would deliver Romeo’s letter.
