Freshman year - perhaps the most essential factor in deciding whether or not a student chooses to drop out or stay in high school. From the transition to high school to your GPA, all the way to the looming threat of future academic paths and mandatory tests, everyone knows that ninth grade is indeed the toughest time for any high school student in the grand scheme of things. Although, some may be of the mind that perhaps eleventh grade is the toughest due to the demand of numerous tests and the anxiety stemming from scores unbeknownst to the students. Others may say perhaps senior year due to the oncoming storm of future diversions in their academic path, or perhaps even sophomore year because it represents the continuation of staying on the right track, and either dealing with the poor decisions of freshman year or continuing the high demands successes in ninth grade produced. Despite of all this, it is certain ninth grade is the most essential in determining whether or not a student drops to the path due to the chance that your ninth grade GPA isn’t up to par with the rest of of your GPAs, …show more content…
As the article mentioned earlier states, “‘We are ending up with something now called the ninth-grade bulge.’” As the article explains, a ninth-grade bulge is when a plethora of students are forced to repeat the ninth grade - perhaps due to a low work ethic - and thus the amount of students in the ninth grade is much higher than that of the other classes. This is most definitely the strongest supporting statement for why ninth grade is the most important in the life of a dropout because it illustrates how a student may go through the motions and transitional period between middle and high school, and yet fail due to an incompetent work ethic. In summary, A student may be forced to repeat a grade due to their lowered GPA, stemming from the roots of failing
After high school, there are many different opportunities that open up for everyone. Some people have the chance to go to a prestigious college right after they are done with their high school career. Others might just want a break from school and possibly take a year off. There are no right or wrong answers to what someone does after they finish high school. It all depends on the person's situation or what they feel is best for them. However, there may be some more benefits to taking a year off than going straight to college.
The epic poem, Beowulf, a work of fiction, offers more insight into Ancient Anglo-Saxon English culture than the work of Bede, who wrote, A History of the English Church and People. A unique facet to the nationwide college athlete discourse surrounds the rigorousness of their academic standards. Supporters of the current standards cite that student-athletes must meet the same minimum GPA as traditional students. Although the GPA requirements differ depending on the institution, the students must make progress toward graduating based on a schedule established by the NCAA. Violating the rules can result in ineligibility. Bill Hawkins, a professor at University of Georgia, points out that student-athletes must also adhere to the same admission standards as other students, despite many athletes coming from poorly funded public schools. Hawkins also argues that student-athletes are devoting 50 to 70 hours a week to sports and cannot handle a full-time academic course load during the sports season. The NCAA points out that graduation rates for all student-athletes are rising. Graduation rates among women student-athletes are around 80 percent for many sports and exceeds the rate for women students overall.
“Man masters nature not by force but by understanding. This is why science has succeeded where magic failed: because it has looked for no spell to cast over nature”. From the beginning of time man and nature has been in conflict with one another because, as a whole, there is no cooperating. Each one tirelessly wants its way. The Man is fighting for dominance and nature w never yielding its authority. In American Literature, many authors illustrate this theme in their writing. Specifically the writers Jack London in The Law Of Life, Stephen Crane The Open Boat and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Fin. Each explores the relationship between humans and nature but with slightly different methods. Mark Twain uses nature in a realistic way, Jack London in a naturalistic way and Stephen Crane constitutes a combination of both.
Every day, more and more attempts of banning books and taking away the rights of our First Amendment get violated. The challenging of a book is the attempt to remove or restrict materials, and the banning is the removal of these materials. I believe that books should not be banned for these reasons.
Most people aren’t familiar with ways our government is trying to lower health care costs of the homeless by putting them in houses, here is their chance to learn. “Housing First” approaches are aimed at reducing the number of homeless people in metropolitan cities, especially in USA and Canada. In Tulsa, the Mental Health Association operates housing models that are successful using the Housing First approach, but only with a success rate of around nine percent. These programs are able to help people achieve self-sufficiency. Special consideration is given to people who have mental illnesses. The main advantage of the approach is it makes an efficient use of the existing systems and services, and then eliminates the need for new ones. The approach has been said to lead to better quality of life, less alcohol and substance use among the beneficiaries, and less use of emergency services by the beneficiaries. Despite all of the advantages and purposes, the program has many challenges that make one think it’s not as successful as first projected. This could lead to program loss or the challenges being dealt with appropriately. If the government wants to use money to help end homelessness, they should put it towards resources and organizations that can, not towards homes where the homeless go to be ignored.
There comes a time in someone’s life when they must get a job to support themselves or their family. For those who don’t have a college degree, a minimum wage job is the way to go. A federal minimum wage is the lowest hourly, daily or monthly compensation that employers may legally pay to workers. However if minimum wage is so low that someone can barely make an income, to support themselves or a family. Minimum wage is based on federal decisions. Some states minimum wage is more than the next. For example Florida’s is $7. 79 while Connecticut’s is $8.25 per hour. Georgia has the lowest minimum wage which is $5.15. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Minimum wage should be increased because poverty will be reduced, it will be good for economic recovery, and provide more for families. However minimum wage raises are opposed by those who believe it will create more unemployment.
I didn’t know what to expect of high school as I sauntered in the doors as an incoming high school freshman. In my first couple of weeks of school, I learned that it was basically like middle school, just a little stricter with different teachers and a different locker. I asked myself “how bad could it be?” Turns out,
Every person has wondered about something - whether it be a person, place, thing, law, or anything that someone can think about. They ask questions both rhetorical and actual to themselves, and usually make it a mission to answer these questions. Some of the biggest questions have something to do with culture and religion. One of the most major questions of all time - to what extent does an individual have control over the outcome of his or her life? There are many different opinions on this topic.
In May of 2006, Gallup Poll found that sixty-nine percent of Americans answered yes to the question "When a person has a disease that cannot be cured, do you think doctors should be allowed by law to end the patient's life by some painless means if the patient and his family request it?”. Assisted suicide is suicide committed by someone with assistance from another, usually a physician. Supporters of the Death With Dignity law believe that anyone should be able to take the lethal pill if he or she has a terminal illness and only has six months or less to live. This is legal in the three states of Oregon, Washington, and Montana. Assisted suicide should be legal in California.

What makes a good person good? According to WikiHow, "We should learn to define our own morals ourselves. One of the simplest ways to do so is to love others, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Try to think of others before yourself. Even doing small things daily will greatly enrich and improve your life, and the lives of others around you." This quote shows us what we need to do in order to be what society thinks as, “good". On the 16th of June in 1933, Congress passed the National Recovery Act which ordered that females were to be paid twenty-five percent less than males. Consequently, the male and female pay gap continued to get larger and more segregative type walls were put up. However, more recently women have been closing in on the gender gap with the help of the Lily-Ledbetter fair pay act, and equal pay day. The idea that women were not paid as much as men has always been fascinating to us because we as young woman had always thought that if men and women were doing equal work then they should be paid the same. We ended up participating in History Day as an assignment for our history class.
