Does ACT and SAT scores matter? Or does it take persistence, passion, and a desire to give back? Do ACT and SAT scores really matter? In Sarah Sheffer’s Article Do ACT and SAT scores really matter? New study say they shouldn't, Former Dean of Admissions William Hiss says, “‘...GPA matters the most’’’ (Sheffer). While Marcela Alvarez has low SAT scores, she has an exceptionally high GPA. SAT and ACT scores are just a snapshot, while her grades are an overview of how she does in class. Marcela Alvarez does have what it takes to become a student at UC
While reading “ Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, many opinions can be formed of Chris McCandless. One, in particular, was the author's opinion which he blatantly stated on page 85. He didn't think that Chris was some reckless foolish insane idiot. He believed that competent otherwise he wouldn't have lasted so long. I agree with Krakauer, things Chris did on this journey did not show signs of some careless person. Chris was just an adventurer looking to get away from the expectations society had of him to see the world for what it really was.
The want for money drastically affected the Younger’s and changed their lives for the worst. In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, A family in 1950s Chicago want for money was putting a negative strain on the family.
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. There are so many different aspects of the agriculture industry that many people never think twice about. Most people are not interested in agriculture because they think it is just about farming or
There is so much that can be learned from the past. Especially from an event that was as catastrophic as this one. How does one person gain such a grip on so many people? How was he able to influence them to change their entire life’s to conform to what he wanted. Somehow he was able to get them to move to a completely new place and create a world all their (his) own. How does one person convince and force so many people that it was time for their life to end? How does he force them to kill themselves? So many questions that are still being answered to this day. There are plenty of movies and research done on this event but there is still a lot to learn.
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
John Brown was an abolitionist who fought for freedom of slaves in the nineteenth century leading up to the Civil War. He was remembered for his bravery and dedication while taking action through the raid at Harper’s Ferry and the Pottawatomie Massacre. John Brown was a freedom fighter, religious warrior and political zealot. Although his violent approach was seen as an act of terrorism his ultimate goal was the emancipation of slavery justified by the word of God.
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt). The goal of America’s legal system as we know it is that everyone is given an equal opportunity to stick up for what they may or may not have done, as described by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Also this is what officials strive for, it is not always the case. Facts can be skewed, distorted, or misrepresented to make one side seem to be guilty without a doubt and to make the other side seem as if they have done nothing wrong. The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins and ends with one-sided accusations of witchcraft. It all results from a group of girls who had been dancing in the woods. After two fall sick, the accusations begin. The girls who were dancing, especially Abigail Williams begin blaming others to look less guilty themselves. Accusations are flying left and right so that soon, hundreds are in jail and over a dozen are executed. Abby’s main goal is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can be with John Proctor, a man she previously had an affair with. However, John is not interested in Abby and his
First of all, I heartily believe in a situation where a student is sincerely willing and determined to excel in all aspects of their education, they deserve to have every opportunity that anybody interested in attending college has, no exceptions. In August, President Obama made a proposal to rate colleges based on qualifications. Qu...
Frederick Douglas was an African American slave that was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, in Maryland. Douglass’s narrative is an autobiography that exploits his life from the time he was born till the time he escaped slavery and into freedom in the north. During that time, Douglass deviates from a benighted prey of slavery to an educated and endowed man. The life of Frederick Douglass consisted of numerous categories that impacted slavery. However, specifically education, violence towards women, religion, and his masculinity shows his perseverance in becoming a true component in overcoming the hardship of slavery.
Though those numbers are staggering, getting accepted into UT Austin is very possible. In addition to looking at the numbers, the students admitted to the university were all ranked in the top 7% of
“I always feel like somebody's watching me and I have no privacy.” These are the famous lyrics from one of Michael Jackson's hit songs Somebody’s Watching Me. Now, back when this song was created, there was not as much worry about people constantly being watched by cameras, but it seems to fit in the problem that my generation is facing. In the book 1984, written by George Orwell, the society is always being watched through a device called a telescreen. The main character, Winston, has trouble adjusting to the life of always being monitored, and the fact that if you made one mistake you could be tortured or killed. This book was made in the late 1940’s and was written to show what the predicted future would be like. Many people who have read

Within the guidelines of this admissions policy, regardless of a student’s previous achievements ranging from straight A’s, perfect attendance or even high potential, the only factor that counts is their score.
What I believe makes me stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California is the desire I have to learn. I believe there’s a difference between wanting to learn and having the need to learn. Most people continue their education in order to get it over with and pursue their career, but there’s other people who have a passion for learning. Some people want to know everything there is to a topic to be aware of any situations that may occur and to have more knowledge on said topics. I am one of those people who has a passion for learning.
If you are a university looking for knowledgeable students, than their American College Test scores just may be their automatic acceptance ticket into your school. Why look at a student's four-year, long-term evidence of self-discipline, hard work, and intellectual curiosity in their overall GPA average over one test? Throughout high school, teachers may tell you that your GPA is how to get into college, but universities are only looking for ACT scores. Colleges might as well forget all your long, hard work at school to keep high grades and testing scores if the ACT is what is only taken into consideration. Students could not possibly demonstrate their accurate knowledge through their 4.0 GPA average, but only through their low ACT score.
