The fresco on the Sistine chapel is arguably the greatest artwork ever completed. Central to the ceiling decoration are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis of which the most famous section is Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam.
Although chronologically the creation of Adam comes before the temptation and expulsion, Michelangelo painted the later first. In both paintings, the figures are in the nude except for God.

The Torment of Saint Anthony (c. 1487-¬88), an oil and tempera on a panel, is believed to be the first painting by Michelangelo inspired by an engraving by Martin Schongauer (c. 1470-75) when Michelangelo was 12 or 13 years old (Vogel. 2009). The good and evil is left to interpretation in “The Marble Statue” while religion in Andersen's tales contains a straightforward portrayal of faith and sin.

Historians believed that Michelangelo painted the Pope in this way because he did not agree with the way Pope Julius II was running the church, Michelangelo and the Pope often disagreed on many different occasions whether it be on religion or just the way he talked to Michelangelo. Michelangelo’s first sculptures were made when he was around age 16. These sculptures were the Battle of the Centaurs and Madonna of the Stairs. The Battle of the Centaurs consisted of nude Greek men fighting centaurs. Centaurs are creatures that have the top half of a man and a bottom half of horse. These sculptures are what told Giovanni de Bertoldo, Michelagelo’s second teacher, that he had a unique calling for sculpting (Bonner Par. 1).

Throughout history, one way that art has been used is to reflect a multitude of ideas and beliefs. Christian beliefs and ideas have been portrayed in artwork since the beginning of Christianity, although, it was not always acceptable to do so. The idea of the final judgement is a Christian idea that has been displayed in art repeatedly in a variety of ways. Michelangelo’s fresco the Last Judgment (1536-1541) is a piece that visualizes this idea. Since the time it was finished, this significant piece found in the Sistine Chapel has been continuously critiqued and analyzed. Many Christians struggle to interpret the event of a final judgment after reading it through Scripture. In analyzing Michelangelo’s piece, it is similar difficult to determine what he exactly meant to portray and what the various part of his masterpiece represent exactly. Many have examined this piece and made different regarding what exactly the various figures and objects are supposed to represent. The diverse interpretations of this work further shows the idea that when Christian ideas are reflected through artwork, it is hard to ascertain exactly what an artist intended to demonstrate. In addition, the controversies surrounding this piece represent the idea that when Christian ideas are revealed through art, there is potential for disagreement regarding what should and should not be included in Christian art. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is just an example of what results when Christianity is brought into art.

The School of Athens (Figure 1) is a fresco painting–a painting done in sections in the fresh plaster–on one of the four walls of the room, the Stanza della Segnatura this room is designated as papal library in the Vatican palace. In this image Raphael represents pictorially the intellectual activity of philosophy. He chooses to represent philosophy by depicting a large number of philosophers in the midst of their activities. The fifty-eight figures who occupy the grandiose architectural space are depicted in the midst of their activity: they are questioning, arguing, demonstrating, reading, and writing. Each figure is characterized so that it is not a mere compositional device, but a shorthand statement of the figure represented (Murray, 62). Construction began on the new basilica on 18 April 1506 under Julius II, who also laid the first stone and was completed on 1615 under Paul V.

Michelangelo was arguably the most famous artist of the late Italian Renaissance, and inarguably one of the greatest artists of all time. There is no question that Michelangelo excelled in all three arts: sculpting, painting and architecture. Although that is the case, Michelangelo made it clear that he was first and foremost a sculptor. When Michelangelo was in his late 20’s, he sculpted the 17-foot tall David. David and his later sculptures such as Moses and Pieta demonstrated his astounding ability to make marble seem like living flesh and blood to the point where it is hard to even imagine that they could have possibly been created with a hammer and chisel. It almost seems impossible that the artist responsible for the most glorious and exquisite paintings on the Sistine Chapel walls and ceiling quite often declared that he was not a painter. He was more of a sculptor at heart than a painter, which is why Vasari quoted him saying, “I cannot live under pressures from patrons, let alone paint.” Michelangelo wanted his name to live on, but solely as “Michelangelo, the sculptor”, which is who he signed off as on every letter and contract.
