In his essay, Freeman Hrabowski wrote the article “Colleges Prepare People for Life,” which explains how people who go to college and earn a degree have a better chance of getting a job they love and pays well (2013). Many people in today’s world go to college to proceed in their dreams and to get a better chance to make that happen. College helps many students learn what to do in their field of studies, how to mature in life and find a better job with a good paying job. “A job may be the starting point for the good life, but it shouldn’t be the end point” (Hrabowski, 2013). It may be hard for some families to find the right college that is right for them, how many years of college they may need, the cost of the college they chose to go to, and a good paying job. Some even find it harder because they aren't sure what they have been looking. …show more content…
There are many different ways someone can look for “the right college for them.” Hrabowski talks about how each family “should learn as much as possible about each institution they are considering” (2013).
Every school should show the upcoming student what they are going to get into. Many students “need to learn how to manage your time so you can attend classes, study, work, and actually have a bit of a life” (Kerlin, 2017). Student affairs are at most colleges to help newer students learn to socialize and to be the student’s family away from home. For example, the cost of the college they prefer and how student loans can help them with that. Students and families will always look at the cost of schools, but if they truly believe it is the right school, cost does not matter. All funding will be a problem when it comes to college, but many people find a way to get through it. Students “attend college to assure their readiness as leading members of society” (Smith, 2012). Once someone finds what they have been looking for, they will find the great values of life and know what their life is truly
about. Colleges across the United States there are 4,700 colleges and universities and each one, "students can find institutions such as public and private, two-year and four-year, for just about any educational niche and budget" (Hrabowski, 2013). Financial aid is a big thing in today's world and helps many students produce their dreams about going to college. There are many different types of ways someone can pay for college such as; direct loan, grant, interest, private loan, and a work-study. Students and parents have a problem affording college in today’s world because many of the colleges have to adjust for inflation (Ho, 2017). Many of the people with just a high school diploma are scared to go to college or simply cannot afford it. Schools now a day try their hardest to make sure that every family has their way to help them pay for the student's studies on campus. Everyone should have a chance to become a college student, even if it just a two-year degree. “It is therefore important for students to understand their current options and future outcomes before making a decision about borrowing money for college” (Ho, 2017). Depending on how long a student is going to schools, determines how much the cost can be. “Another study of employers suggested students are prepared for their first job but not higher-level positions that require critical thinking the ability to direct themselves, and management of uncertainty” (Smith, 2012). Many studies say that a college degree is a better way to get a good paying job than just having a high school diploma. Some do base themselves on how smart they think they are, and the men and women who do not come to college don’t give themselves a chance. The process of being in college from the age of eighteen to twenty-two shows how one can become mature (Duffy, 2017). College is supposed to teach students how to choose a career or search for a job. Some students can even have a work-study which is, a part-time job meant to assist students by “giving them earn money for tuition, fees, and other school-related expresses” (Ho, 2017). The students who cannot afford a four-year degree go for a two-year degree at a community college. It does not matter the age someone graduates from college as long as they produce their dreams. “10 percent of Americans from the lowest income quartile have earned a college degree by age 24, compared to 80 percent of those in the top quartile” (Hrabowski, 2013). Lastly, college is not for everyone, but people go to college to get a better paying job in the dream job that they have been wanting. The students who attend college get a better chance at a good paying job than someone who has a high school diploma. After earning the degree someone deserves they may not know what they are getting into, but with all the education they have gotten, they make the best at what they have. Cost may be serious when it comes to college, and financial aid will go a long way when someone finds the right college for them. It can be harder for someone people to go to college, but there are many men and women who go to college at the age of sixty-five to prove that they can. Both academic experiences and cocurricular programs as important elements in help prepare students for success after college.
Dale Stephens argues that college isn’t right for everyone. He acknowledges that he left college because he believed that higher education isn’t everything. Dale clarifies that college is expensive. He refers to College Board Policy Center because tuition is about 3.6 times higher today than it was 30 years ago. He brings up good points but bases his ideas off his own opinions not facts. This is a strong argument because when the tuition is higher, it will be harder for and more people to pay for it. This encourages others to look for an alternative path to follow.
To go to college or not to go? Is the question many ask themselves before making a life changing decision. Anthony P. Carnevale “College Is Still Worth It” argues that people should go to college and not rely on faulty data on the worth of postsecondary education. Carnevale is a well-known authority on education and was appointed by President Clinton as Chairman of the National Commission on Employment Policy. While Richard Vedder respond to Carnevale with “For Many, College Isn’t worth it” and claims that college is worth for some people, but it’s not suited for all. Vedder is an economist, author, columnist, and now a distinguished professor of economics emeritus at Ohio University and senior fellow at The Independent Institute. Vedder is able to convince his audience on why college is not always worth it, unlike Carnevale, who was unable to convince his audience.
Today in American society, one feels pressured and obligated to seek higher levels of education. In the article “College prepare people for life” written by Freeman Hrabowski, he expresses his views on the many aspects in which college prepares one for their life; especially, financially. Having a college degree increases ones ability to get a job in comparison to somebody who has solely a high school diploma. However, many are faced with the irony of having to go into to debt, in order to work towards financial independence and security. In terms of socio economics, those who are stuck by poverty often cannot afford going into debt to exit their current ranking in the qazi caste system of poverty. Many argues that college prepares people for life, however one can disagree due to
However, for those who do, they have expectations for what they believe they should be gaining from their educational journey, and what their institution believes they are preparing them for. For Example, I attend Florida Atlantic University, and the reason behind my choosing of this fine institution, is because when researching about the school, I found that it had the resources and the classes to help me pursue my career in medicine. This is beneficial to me, because FAU has programs such as, the pre-health where I was provided with a flight plan which ensures that I know what classes to take and when to take them. Also, the program has an internship towards the end of the program, therefore, the building of relationships and networking with different people with important position, will at some point provide me with guidance and insight regarding my future goals. Programs like FAU’s Pre-health, can really aid one with his or her success by opening doors such as, internship and job opportunities for a student who now further expand their role in his or her field; present their new founded job with the skills inherited throughout school, and finding a way to truly have an impact in their community, state, country and/or
College life is a journey taken by many high school graduate in effort to explore a higher form of education, and most importantly build a new life outside the boundaries of their families to sustain a long path of toward successful career and to some, building a new family of their own. In the United State we are blessed with an education system that is never available worldwide. Laws are placed to allow every students regardless of ethnicity, gender or class a chance to pursue education in among the most prestigious universities in the world such as Ivy League school as well as many large public universities with many programs. This vast number of education institutions available of every type of students create this big diversity leading the U.S. to be the frontrunner of education in the world.
College is the place where people go to retain the necessary training for a job that requires specific skills, which results in earning a higher pay check. In today’s world, employers are scouting out for individuals with the proper dexterities to fill the shoes for that specific job. Blanche D. Blank, the author of “A Question of Degree," argues that possessing a degree of higher education isn’t the only way to have a very successful life. This statement is highly argumentative, due to the fact that college graduates still out-earn people without degrees. Obtaining a college degree is one of the best things someone can do for themselves, when it comes to looking for a stable job. There is also so much more to college than just receiving a
In addition, the writer of “The Benefits of a College Degree” wrote that”One of the most important and obvious reasons to earn a college degree is to increase your earning potential”(“The Benefits”). While it is true that college is indubitably expensive, the years of learning a particular trade or skill for the future of career of these students is important and worth the cost. Also, students can apply for a variety of scholarships for different amounts of money to help pay for college and lower the amount of debt caused by schooling. Furthermore, multiple students believe that a college education is not needed for their future and that they can get good paying jobs without it. This philosophy does not apply to any good paying careers with the exception of the military and some construction jobs. The good paying jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree in many cases, except for a few that require an
Money, Money and more Money. Let’s admit, it 's all we think about and it 's also vital to our survival. When we hear the word "college" the first thing that pops into most people’s minds is money and debt. Of course college means money, but it really means money on both sides. You pay people money so you can get more money later. Sounds
In previous times it has been thought, by some, that with a college degree a person could have any job and would be very successful. In Colonial America, colleges were mainly founded by the wealthy. The goal of college at this time was to “produce Christian gentlemen who would inherit their family business” (Thelin). After a “college boom” so many state colleges were built and some became co-ed, adding “special” courses for women. The goal of college attendance still was not completion of a bachelor’s degree. College during this time was mainly primary learning so students could eventually move onto college-level higher learning. “Students sometimes took two years of courses in order to earn an LI (license of instruction) certificate to teach public school” (Geiger). Recently there has been debate over whether or not a college degree is really worth it anymore. Some people think getting an education isn’t worth the money. It can be argued that with a college degree you can get a better job. Going to college, seems to be the obvious next step for many high schoolers. Getting a college degree and education is worth it. Students will come to find that the benefits of having a degree outweigh the negatives. College helps prepare students for the future and exposes them to life experiences.
Students entering college for the first time become concern with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These student are now responsible on how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands from college. Students are becoming more stressful due to academic demands, social life, and work. First-year college students should receive more help from school to learn how to help themselves and become independent.
In current times, children are told from a young age that college is imperative to getting a good, stable job. However, this is not always true. Therefore, it cannot be determined if college is always the best choice. Because each person is different and learns in a way unique to themselves, it’s up to each individual to decide whether or not they think they need further education based upon their goals, aspirations, and desires in life. There are many benefits to attending a college or university. For example, college graduates earn about $17,500 more each year than high school graduates. College degrees also give you more options. Not only do you have many career options after obtaining your degree, you also have differing options of how you acquire your degree. Colleges and universities have created many diverse programs, offering traditional classes, online classes, semi-online classes, and night and weekend classes. One of the biggest benefits of attending college is the real world experience you gain from being there and living partially on your own. For most people, college is a time where you can gain experience living with new responsibilities that you don’t have at home, without the pressure of having to pay bills on time
Having a college degree in today’s world is very important because more companies and businesses are requiring that anyone they hire has at least a two-year college degree, which is also known as an Associate 's degree. High school graduates and other people who have had thoughts about going to college should do so because it is getting harder for just a high school graduate to get a job, this is a result of hiring companies and businesses don’t want anyone without a college degree. Having a college degree will open more opportunities for the future. By doing so they further their lives and create a future that they want.
The first reason that a college education is necessary is because it can help people to get a better quality of life in the future, especially for people who were raised from poor families. Ever since I was a little kid, I was always being told by many people that “knowledge can change your destiny. It makes you not only rich in life, but also enrich you as a productive person.” In my understanding, college education opens a door that can eventually change people’s future as long as they will willing to work hard. Hence, I always had the dream about being like a grown-up to go to college and ge...
Jayson Boyers stated that "having a college education can make big differences in some people 's lives" (The Huffington Post Newspaper, 2012). People who do college education often get high level and high paying jobs. The main reason for why students feel hesitant to attend college after they graduate from high school is because they worry about the price of schooling and they prefer to have a job instead to make fast money. Although, people who graduated from high school often are only able to receive jobs at fast food restaurants, clothing stores, etc. When people are able to earn more than enough money to have a stable life they are able to be less stress-free and enjoy their lives more. People who often work in retail jobs face the risk of not making enough money to buy food and also pay their rent. The money that people earn in retail jobs takes a very long time to save up in order to go to college. Alternatively, the world is very competitive and people, truthfully, do have trouble succeeding and even surviving day to day. The most recommended thing to do is to go to college after high school and take out a student loan if needed and pay it off when a career job is obtained. Working very hard now equals to a better life, job opportunities afterward, and positive friendships
