Freedom in choosing college courses has raised many views on whether to be granted to the students or not. Over the years, students have been made to take up courses according to the grades they obtained at their high school level. The colleges base their admission of students and the courses they will study according to set specific requirement. Moreover ,the students performing very well in their high school, a good number of them, are forced by the universities to study the courses they view are according to their performance. Students when given the freedom to choose the courses to study, they will choose what is not a burden to them, but a challenge. Each person knows their knowledge, level of understanding and which course to study, after self evaluation when freedom of choosing their classes is granted. In addition, the student considers the subjects to be studied that will not overwhelm them. The product of being burdened by the course as a whole is that they will physically struggle and, mentally will not be at relaxed. The struggle is mostly caused by long classes that the student cannot handle and, lots of homework that eats up a lot of time meant for independent study. In a number of institutions, some subjects are considered compulsory when a course is being studied. The students are forced to take up the subjects that they are not interested in; moreover they are not able to choose subjects they have interested in. Due to the obligation of studying what one is not in their interest, one may not take their studies seriously because they consider that the subjects are not really needed and are just a waste of time. The moment the student is allowed to choose what subject to study, they will be eager when it comes to ... ... middle of paper ... ...ourse, the strong urge to attend the lectures, the zeal to complete college and finally the ability to perform excellently at the workplace when one gets a job. There should be no influence or obligations by other people or institutions on what to study at the college because, it may not be of your interest that afterwards, may cause discontinue of one’s studies. Therefore, the students should take up the mantle and stand firm on their ability to choose a course that is suitable for their career and lives for it is what will define who they will become in the future. Students these days need to be able to put effort and time in their school work. You should be wanting to get your degree. College cannot be bought it is how you value your education. The value of education is based on the student’s actions. The author stated, “the decision to go to college is a decision to make an investment in their future, and investment of time and money.” The investment is to factor the value of courses to students.
Parents are forcing students to take classes they don’t want, leaving the student dull and unheard. Parents focus their kids to take challenging classes in order to satisfy their fear of the child getting into a good college. Students are told by parents and the school system that they must take this challenging class and extracurricular just meet ‘the standard quota” but reality it’s not true. For instance, Zinsser’s did a survey on Yale students and asked the students a question about their parental guidance and why they follow it. The results were scary, most students stated: “well my parents want me to be a doctor… They’re paying all this money….” (Zinsser
Community colleges and universities all belong to higher education, but actually they do not have the same requirements for their students. Peter Sacks is a college teacher. With Sacks’ teaching experiences, he believes that “nobody in the system had much of a stake in shoring up educational standards” which shows his dissatisfied about the current education system. Sacks thinks higher education should only be provided to students who can do excellent job on studying. However, only a few universities hold their applicants to this high requirement. Indeed, the phenomenon that Sacks finds is correct, many community colleges and universities have low requirements for students, but Sacks does not see the good part of this low requirements. If higher education includes different requirements, more people will be able to accept better education than high school, and this will be helpful for themselves and society.
...the work, personal, and social life context, can promote or impede their learning” (247). This statement is true because if these activities continue to impede the learning of a student then he or she will get stressed out, which could result in the student dropping all his or her college classes. If the student could just sit back and analyze the situation, life would be easier. For example, the student could reduce the number of classes he or she takes every semester. Reducing the amount of classes could result in more time spending with family rather than doing homework. When thinking of a person whose life is filled with frustrating duties and activities remember a nontraditional college students’ schedule of completing activities of school, working long hours, completing personal activities, and trying to spend free time with family and friends all in one day.
Students are not prepared for the stress coming from the University workload when they leave high school. In high school students are assigned a major project, then it is weeks before they are assigned another. Teachers give students weeks, if not months to prepare for a major assignment. High school teachers also accommodate for tests or projects in other classes. When students get to University, they are assigned many major assignments at the same time in different courses and have very little time to complete them. Because of the Ontario School System, students are not prepared for the stresses of a University workload.
The process of preparing for college is an arduous process. College is an instrument used to have a successful life. However, getting into college is difficult. The competition for college admittance is extremely high. Most students do not take the necessary actions to ensure their admittance. Consequently, many students do not get attend their ideal college. Therefore, I have taken steps to make certain that I attend the college of my choice, By taking care of my class ranking, actively participating in school functions, and researching my intended degree, I have set myself up to attend the college of my choice.
The article “Uncluttering the pathway to diploma” is a great article because it talks about the situation student goes through in college which prevents them to obtain their degree. Most of the students who just started colleges is basically coming from high school where they have been given their courses and schedule which is totally different in college. There are many lazy students who register their classes late, which provide them with few options. Since, students don’t get the right guidance which is one of the reasons why they end up choosing classes which are not their requirements. From my perspective, students who are attending college must be advised properly so they can choose the right course of time which is related towards their major. It increases the chances of choosing a good professor and achieving a highest grade in a class which increases the
Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress. With all the given factors, it can be hard to overcome these external factors which can ultimately lead to stress among
People in the past did not stress value of receiving a higher education because it was not as indispensable as it is today. Now, people perceive others not only by their appearances, but by their accomplishments. Employers always hire people with the most education and experience. The majority of students are concerned about getting a higher education throughout the years. Nevertheless, some people question the purposes of getting educated, and consider it meaningless. The concept of education has a significant meaning. It enables one to take control of knowledge and apply it. It is education what prepares the mind to comprehend and learn important ideas. A higher education is very important for an individual's success in life. It offers students skills that prepare them mentally, physically and socially for the world of work later in life. A higher education should not be a choice, because it is the foundation of our society. It helps students with their personal development, provides economic growth, helps students understand and interpret the world around them, and affects individuals’ job positions. It will promote new interests, economic stability, help students understand others, and prepare better individuals for the future.
As hundreds upon thousands of students commence their first year of college, whether it is a community, state, or private university, it is important to talk about the role of college education. Pursuing a college education after high school is very important. Not only will it help one set up career goals for themselves, it will also teach them how to become responsible adults to learn their way around the world, and cover important aspects of what it means to further one’s education .
College students should be allowed to choose their courses because they will study more comfortably. Students will spend a lot of their time studying and researching more on the chosen course in order to excel. They will understand the course very well because; it is what they are interested in. In addition, if college students are given a chance to choose the subjects they want to study, they will be more eager to attend classes because, they love what there are dong. This means, many college students will excel I their studies. Thy will put a lot of effort in their studies and get best results because, they are comfortable with the course. Students need a chance to choose what courses to take, and as the result, they will get better marks, which is satisfactory both for them as well as for their teachers.
What contributing factors affect student motivation towards success in college? Motivation is a force that helps people to achieve what they yearn to be, which helps people conquer obstacles to reach a goal. Students can be physically present in the classroom, but mentally absent. Many things can play a factor in student academic success from the quality of the professors’ lecture, to sufficient and modern facilities or the effective engagement between student and professors. In many researches including the books Lives on the Boundary by Mike Ross and Academically Adrift by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa it demonstrates factors that students face in the achievement of academic success. Those factors that coincide on student academic success are motivation, life responsibilities, and preparation.
...centuries. However, it has to be noticed that the system is facing some unneglectable issues as this paper discussed above. The government and school authorities ought to spare no effort to better reform and regulate the existing issues: lower the costs and tuitions of colleges and universities while still retaining the high and rigorous standard of teaching and learning; improve the management of enrollment to remain the prestigious reputation of universities. On the other hand, instead of doubting higher education, young people should always have the faith to trust the value of higher education and continue to improve their abilities to contribute to society and higher education. Although the society will continue to change in an unforeseeable way, government and individuals’ passion and enthusiasm for establishing a better higher education system will never stop.
Sometimes a student need to take six to seven classes per semester and the professors can assign new assignments for each classes. The students need to submit all the assignments before the deadline and as the deadline closes in pressure keeps building up. It can monumental task to complete two to three assignments a day or sometimes up to seven per week. Thus, the students will not have enough time to concentrate on the assignments as they also need to do other things such as attending classes, getting involved in co-curricular activities and part time job. Thus, the students will be stressed because of lack of time to finish the assignments. Some assignments are group assignments that need to be done with other students. If every group member cannot give their full commitment to do the assignments together, the students will be stressed too. So a lot of assignments can be one of the causes of stress among university students. And then there are exams and midterms which can be very stressful on it 's own as the results of those exams will reflect on a student 's future career
