Jeremy Littlejohn English III Ms. Siciliano March 22, 2015 Frederick Douglass The setting of the story is set in Maryland in 1833 when we are introduced to Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass tells that while he was a slave he went to work for Mr. Covey. He explains through the story that Mr. Covey is very harsh and cruel through his personal experiences with Covey. Douglass claims that Covey has beaten many times to the point where he has ridges on his back the size of his little finger. Furthermore, because Covey spied on his slaves, one day Douglass falls on the ground because he was not feeling very well and Covey notices. Covey kicks Douglass and begins to beat him once more breaking douglass’s spirit and confidence making him
angry. Frederick returns to his owner because Covey is so harsh; however, his owner tells him to go back and work for Covey. On his way back to work for Covey, Douglass friend Jenkins gives him something special. Jenkins gives Douglass a root to keep him safe from any further beating from Covey. When Douglass returns Covey tries to tie him up and beat him again but this time something different happens. This time Douglass stands up to Covey and fights him for close to two hours. Ultimately after this daring act Covey never messes with or tries to beat Douglass again. Now that Douglass has stood up to. Covey he feels like he has become strong and begins working for Covey again. Douglass showed his self interest when he decided that he was not going conform to slavery and fought back.
Douglass as both the author and narrator in his novel took readers through his escape from slavery. Specifically mentioned in chapter seven of the book, the author expressed his new skill of reading and how that inspired his freedom. Douglass utilized rhetorical devices in chapter seven, such as pathos and personification to illustrate to his audience how his education motivated him to achieve liberation. Douglass’ effective use of emotion throughout the chapter made his experiences appeal to readers. Also, the first and last sentences of chapter seven served as bookends to show how education influenced Douglass’ freedom because within those two phrases there was a portion of Douglass’ journey told on how he escaped salvation. Slavery was abundant in the cities of the South, as well as the countryside. The roles of urban slaves varied greatly from plantation slaves. Frederick Douglass’ move to the city was the turning point in his life and without his move to the city, Fredrick Douglass would not have been the famous abolitionist and writer we know of today. Urban slaves typically partook in household, artisan or factory positions, while slaves from the plantation generally were out in the fields or doing some other agricultural work. Because Baltimore was a port city, during his time living there, Douglass had the opportunity of learning and working the trade of ship caulking, which is a type of artisan work. Urban slavery provided, most of the time, an easier life for a slave. Generally, a slave from the city would be better clothed, fed, and would avoid most of the physical abuse suffered by the rural slave. When Douglass lived as a slave in Baltimore, he was always well fed and clothed. Urban slavery also offered more opportunities to escape.due to the white abolitionists and free blacks that were there to help slaves escape to freedom. Douglass was able to successfully with the help of kind whites escape the shackles of freedom and go to the North. As time went on Frederick stood up to his master after being infuriated by the way he was treated. While the confrontation with Mr. Covey can be seen as physical heroism on Douglass’s part, his heroism developed from not only a physical state but also a mental state. His efforts to overthrow his slave status began with the drive to become a free man.
In The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass, emotional violence takes an aggressive toll not only on Douglass, but also his master Mr. Covey, his family, and fellow slaves. During his time with Covey, Douglass was affected deeply by the strain of slavery, especially in spirit and ways of hope. Mr. Covey was infamous for his reputation as a ‘‘nigger-breaker” and induced fear into slaves, emotionally scarring them (Douglass 53).
In this narrative, Douglass describes his life as a slave in ways that is brutalizing and dehumanizing. He wants his readers to understand that concept. By doing this, Douglass writes, “I was seized with a violent aching of the head, attended with extreme dizziness; I trembled in every limb” (416). Douglass uses diction such as seized, aching, extreme dizziness, and trembled to help create a picture of the pain he had felt during his experiences of being a slave for Mr. Covey. Another example is when he writes, “I told him as well as I could, for I scarce had strength to speak. He then gave me a savage kick in the side, and told me to get up I tried to do so, but fell back in the attempt. He gave me another kick, and again told me to rise. I again tried, and succeeded in gaining my feet; but stooping to get the tub with which I was feeding the fan, I again staggered and fell” (416-17). Words like scarce, savage, and staggered place imagery into the reader’s minds of what he went through as a slave. The narrative of Douglass quotes "Mr. Covey gave me a very severe whipping, cutting my back causing blood to run, and raising ridges on my flesh as large as my little finger". This quote also shows how horrible the men were abused and beaten too. Although, they had more of a chance to fight back against their masters, which is proven in this quote "This gave me assurance, and I held him uneasy, causing the blood to run where I touched him with the ends of my fingers". Frederick Douglass, a former slave and passionate abolitionist, provides descriptive stories of his life as a slave, all the way from his childhood to his escape. Chapter four specifically focuses on the unjustness of slavery, and Douglass’ central claim that there is no justice system in the slave world. In chapter four, Douglass describes the brutal murder of Demby and recounts multiple killings of slaves by overseers to support his central claim that slaves receive no justice, safety or security.
The overall tone of Chapter 6, in the book The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, is insentient. Insentient means incapable of feeling or inanimate. He simply is spiritless when he writes this chapter. At the end of chapter 6 Douglass wrote about how a slave named Mary was whipped so often she would bleed. “I have seen Mary contending with the pigs for the offal thrown into the street. So much was Mary kicked and cut to pieces, that she was oftener called “pecked” than by her name”(Douglass page 31). The way he wrote it was as if he didn’t flinch at the awful details of her being whipped.
