Frederick Douglass is known as one of the most prominent African American figures in the Civil War, serving as a consultant to President Abraham Lincoln, an acquaintance to William Lloyd Garrison, giving many civil rights lectures, and highly influencing the Emancipation Proclamation. Frederick Douglass is known for his abilities as an abolitionist, orator, writer, and social reformer. Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born in Talbot County, Maryland in February 1818. Born into slavery, Frederick spent an early part of his life living with his grandmother, Betty Bailey. He would later be moved to the home of his plantation owners, one of which may have been his father, Aaron Anthony. He would then settle in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and be married to a free black woman, named, Anna Murray (with whom he would have five children). When in New Bedford in the year 1841, Frederick would attend anti-slavery meetings. It was at one of these meetings in which he would meet William Lloyd Garrison, a fellow abolitionist, and founder of The Liberator (a newspaper). Garrison would prove to have a big impact on Frederick’s life, encouraging him to pursue public speaking, and telling others about his slave experience. This would then cause Frederick to begin giving lectures at anti-slavery conventions, rapid earring a title as a persuasive speaker.
