You would be walking in the shadows surrounded by negativity, darkness, and emptiness but then a special friend lifts you up in spirit and drags you into the light. Someone who changes your life just by being a part of it. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. No matter what situation you’re in, they are always with you, even if you don’t see them. In the story, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Freak and Max’s friendship starts out cold, but the two boys gradually discover that they both work well together and need each other’s strengths in order to grow. Freak and Max both have an anomalous body and way of life, although together they can do so much. Together, these two are unstoppable; …show more content…
after all, it is Freak's sharp-witted brain on Max's large body. The boys go on a bunch of adventures and quests together, for example one involves returning a woman's stolen purse. This dynamic duo forms into "Freak the Mighty," nine feet tall, slaying dragons and fools while walking high above the world over the course of time. Freak and Max’s friendship changed over the course of the story because they had no one else, they were both different, and they went from being strangers to best friends, more & more throughout the story.
On the other hand, the start of Max & Freak’s friendship started out cold. The first time the duo actually spoke to each other was the summer before 8th grade on July 1st, but they've known each other’s existence since daycare. Freak moved into the house alongside Max’s home. When Max went outside to see who was moving in, Freak catches the sight of Max and "shot" his heart with his crutch and threatens Max, “‘Identify yourself, earthling!’… ‘I said identify yourself, earthling, or suffer the consequences’” (8) Before Max can say a word Kevin pulls the trigger on his crutch and makes a weapon noise, he then says, ‘“Then, die, earthling, die.’’’ (9) Max dashes away without saying a word thinking how much the “crippled-up yellow haired midget, wants him to die. As aforementioned their friendship started out cold when Max but …show more content…
later… Max and Freak’s friendship started to grow on the 4th of July. It's the Fourth of July, and Max and Freak get to go to the fireworks without any adult supervision. Gram is worried people are going to step on Freak because he's so little, but it turns out the real trouble comes from the "beer swillers or more known as as Tony D and his gang. Tony D, who everyone calls Blade, stops Max and Freak on their way to the fireworks. The best way to deal with this guy is to avoid him in the first place. He starts asking if they have any fireworks, but Freak just keeps walking.. ‘“Come [...], Maxwell,” he says over his shoulder “Ignore the cretin.”’ Tony steps in front of Freak and asks him what he called him. Freak just looks right up into his face and says, "Cretin. C-R-E-T-I-N. Defined as one who suffers from a mental deficiency" (30 & 31) Max couldn’t help burst into laughter because he just couldn’t help himself. Blade eyes Max up and down, as if he's deciding whether to fight him or simply kill him. Thankfully, Max hears a siren, and a cop car pulls up. Blade takes off running. Freak asks Max if he thinks he could have taken him, and Max answers with a big fat no. You don't just fight Blade; you have to fight his gang, too. Freak starts laughing so hard he falls down. Max picks him up and can't believe how light he is. Later, when they're watching the fireworks and Freak can't see, Max picks him up and puts him on his shoulders. Freak is happy to be able to see and he names each of the chemicals and elements that create the colors in the fireworks. This was Max and Freak’s first “adventure” together during their friendship beginning with a serving of danger with a side dish of fun. Overall Max and Freak’s (or Kevin’s) friendship was uncongenial in the beginning but forthcoming came a friendship that could light up all the darkness in the world.
While Max had problems with his past and his body, Freak had problems with his body and his future. Max was there to lend his big body for Freak’s big brain. They went on quests together like in the story of King Arthur (which was “behind” their whole friendship). It might’ve started out negatively but over time it became the glowing star in the whole galaxy. Max was standing alone in the down under (phrase from book as “Max’s room). He was silently staring at the floor in the dark. He felt cold and lonely. He hears something terrifying screaming his name. But then suddenly a little munchkin comes out of the darkness and pulls Max into a bright and glorious world. Max only saw a bright sunny day in July. The sky was painted a bright blue topped with white cotton candy floating in the blue. The shiny green grass glistened and grew in the shining sun. The birds tweeted in their nest calling for their mother in joy. Max had never seen this world before. Freak was the one who opened the door. But it was also Max who made the door to the endless possibilities of their futures. Max was also the one who opened Freak’s door which was born into his life. Over time the greatest friendship ever known to humanity came along. Freak’s huge brain took on Max’s huge body. The miracle friendship of Freak the Mighty was born,
those two standing high above the beautiful mysterious world.
In the novel Mr.Was by Pete Hautman young Andie had long red hair, green eyes, loved going on walks in the woods and loved a good adventure. Andie was trustworthy, loyal, and was often pushed around. Scud and Jack love her, as they grow up things start to change for her and her feelings change. Andie is the total opposite of Scud, Scud is a troublemaker and Andie just kind of tags along but never really does anything bad.The feelings for Jack and Andie become strong when Jack goes to war. Jack and love is Andie’s motivator, she follows and always stays in touch with Jack due to her feelings. As the story goes on the characters grow up. Andie now has the same characteristics but is done letting people push her around. Andie is a lot like Brutus
An example of their adventures is when Kevin mouths at Tony D. and his gang, defending Max and himself; after of which he discovers that Max could not have fought Tony and incredulously questions, “You mean you couldn’t take him and I was giving him lip?” (31). Kevin’s words reveal his trust in Max. He incited Tony, believing Max would be able to protect the both of them. The boys’ next conflict, an encounter with Iggy, the head of a troublemaking motorcycle gang, and Loretta, his wife, show Max’s concern for Kevin and his wanting to keep Kevin safe: “I feel real bad for Freak because he hated it when people try to rub his head for luck, but I don’t say a word, I just run us home, thumping the short way back around the pond, and my big feet never trip me up because I’m on automatic, I’m this running machine” (72). Max is very attuned and sensitive to Kevin’s feelings, an important quality in a friendship. Also, his desire to protect Kevin and keep him away from Iggy and Loretta prevent his clumsiness from impeding his speedy progress to home. The conflicts Freak the Mighty encounter prove the boys’ undeniable teamwork and
Max and Freak relationship is very good. They both like each other and our good friends.Frea thinks of Max as his legs, so he can walk. Max thinks of Freak as his Brain, so he can think and be smart. It’s almost like they
Also, he had received a nickname during daycare Kicker.“‘Hey you! Mutt and Jeff! Frankenstein and Igor! Don’t look around, I’m talking to you, boneheads. What is this, a freak show?’”(Philbrick 29). Tony D is the one who said this quote. He and his gang ganged up on Freak and Max at the carnival and of which they ended up in the millpond. Even though Max may seem like a giant, but he is very kind hearted and cares for everyone around him. For example, when Freak dies, Max runs through everyone he sees just to get to Freak. If a doctor was in his way they would have been crushed. Metaphorically of course. Another example is when Loretta Lee was being strangled Max save her by throwing himself onto his Father.
I think that Chris is a very motivated person. He knows what he wants and he is willing to do anything to get there. This quote describes when Gallien was trying to persuade Chris not to go through with his hitchhiking plan, “But he wouldn’t give an inch. He had an answer for everything I threw at him” (Krakauer 7). This quote shows the depth of his motivated character because of his unwillingness to change his mind. Additionally, I also think that Chris has a very optimistic character and outlook on life. Chris is not willing to totally accept the danger of what he is about to do because he is quick to hope for the best. Proof of this character trait can be found in the following quote, “‘I’m absolutely positive… I won’t run into anything I can’t deal with on my own’” (Krakauer 7).
In today's society there are lots of people that believe that dumb people can not accomplish anything in there whole life. From the book Freak the Mighty this point is proven wrong. Max and Kevin, are the two most important characters in Freak the Mighty, they can both be described as dynamic characters. Each of them goes through major changes that are revealed through their actions, and by what the author says about them. Maxwell embodies the archetype of the hero's journey. I will discuss this issue using the fact that he has a birth, a calling/journey, and a return.
On the contrary, these good traits could have came from Max’s caretakers, Grim and Gram. These were the same people that raised his mother, and it could have been that both mother and son had such positive character traits because of their parentage. The only hole in this point is that, as described by Max, before Max ‘rescued’ Freak at the fourth of July firework show, Grim and Gram didn’t pay much attention to him, or weren’t exactly well-warmed toward him. I can assume that throughout his childhood, he didn’t interact too heavily with his grandparents, and not much nurturing had occurred. This decreases the overall impact of Grim and Gram’s parenting, and strongly suggests that the capacity to be a good person, just like his mother, must have
That being the case, Max would never believe in himself and changed in life without Freak there to help him.

In the dystopian novel of The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil, the theme is Loss of love. Loss of love is both demonstrated inside the novel and as well it is presented in the real world life where real humans live in. Who knew that in a fiction novel it can seem so real as these situations that are happening in the novel were not made up and were real things happening to the Characters. Just like these situations happening in the novel they are actually happening in the real world today. Loss of love occurs in the novel of The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil through three influential characters; Inner Horinters, Phil, and Carol. The fictional representation of loss is similar to real life situations such as Undocumented Immigrants
Max plays the role of a spokesman for Richard Wright. Unlike others, he considers the humanity in Bigger and sees him for what he is rather than a black man and/or a murder. Considering this, Bigger is open to Max and tells his side of the story for the first time. Moreover, because of Max’s understandment, Bigger sees that it is indeed possible for a black and a white man to have a sympathetic relationship.
“When you are down in life, your friends get to know who you are. When you're up in life you get to know who your friends are.” -Anonymous. From the novel “Freak the Mighty”, the narrator informs us that Max and Kevin demonstrate a strong friendship. All in all, they were there for each other in the good times and the bad. So in conclusion, good friendship includes teamwork, trust, and having adventures.

It is evident that Max tries to escape his reality and get lost in a world where he can find freedom from his complex troubles, much like every other child in the world today whom does not know how to deal with such chaotic and complicated thoughts. Max, unknowingly comes face to face with all his emotions through the lives of others, helping him to come to an understanding in his escape. In the film “Where the Wild Things Are” Max’s sister ignores him, he feels his mothers new boyfriend is taking her from him and he is overall portrayed as a lonely, lost character. Max is told by his mother that he has gone out of control, which essentially is the last straw in initiating him to run away to where he eventually ends up where the wild things are. According to the article “Fantasy - Necessary for Sanity and Morality” in order for proper development, “A child needs to understand what is going on within his conscious self so that he can cope with that which goes on within his unconscious.” This can be attained by daydreaming through stories and scenarios to ...
...ink he shouldve just put him out. I undestand that him putting max out was keeping him and his family safe, but i think he couldve found somwhere else for Max to saty. This part appeals to the readers logos. while reading this part the reader was trting to understand why Hans couldnt find somewhere else for Max to stay. Hans could've just let Max stay, and really showed how brave he was during the end of the book. This cowadice action was a disadvantage for Max because he had to go through so much once he was put out.
