The Frank Monster: Humanity Lost
The desire to discover and to comprehend the obscure concepts of life is one of our timeless dreams. Many literary works present some of these dreams and demonstrate their result on individuals.. Mary Shelley’s novel , Frankenstein, follows the adventures of a scientist with divine ambitions which ultimately lead him to pursue miraculous capabilities of God. Victor, the protagonist, attempts to attain a status higher than God in order to control life. Dignity, Victor’s primary motivation, emerges throughout the novel along with his exorbitant use of science. The knowledge Victor obtains through his observations and lessons ultimately result in his solitude and defeat.
Victor’s ambitions and adulation toward science commence at a very young age. His childhood is the origin of his arrogance, which appears as the motivation behind his choices as an adult. Growing up in Geneva, Victor is introduced to science at a very young age. Fascinated by the secrets of life he starts his studies of the past and develops the background that serves him when he attends the University of Ingolstadt. Once in the institution, Victor prolongs his knowledge of modern science and masters most subjects. Not very long after attending the university, Victor obtains the proficiency and the components of creating a human being. The idea of controlling life however, did not spark to Victor’s mind when studying science. He first considered the idea after the loss of his mother while he attended the schools of Geneva. The death of his mother leaves him mystified but not discouraged. This is evident when Victor states: “ I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation”...

...s not to himself physically but psychologically. Victor has to adjust to the deaths of his best friend, youngest brother, alluring cousin and a well respected father. His obsession isolates him from his surroundings and the result of this isolations is only more isolation and sorrow. At the end of the novel, Victor has no motivation or ability to continue his work and he realizes that his high hopes about his status in the world of tomorrow have failed.
Consequently, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, is a novel in which the universal attempt of claiming God’s position is demonstrated through the narrative of a scientist. The novel exhibits a man’s ambition for glory and aspiration to no longer remain a creation but to become the creator which leads to his dramatic failure in trying to rise. Had he not attempted to act as a creator, his life could have been in different.
