The functionality of a family is dependent on many factors such as economy, health, household roles, dependency, etc. Family members depend on each other in some way, shape, or form, and as our society changes, family members change and adapt with it. In Frank Kafka’s Metamorphosis, the Samsa family is dependent on each other in various different ways that change and develop throughout the course of the story. Gregor’s transformation not only affects him, but also transforms his family as a whole.
There lies an interesting relationship between the Samsas and functionality. Prior to Gregor’s transformation, he was the sole earner and provider for the home, and the family depended on him and the rest of the family was dysfunctional. However, …show more content…

For example, immediately after Gregor transforms into an insect, he wakes up struggling to figure out how he is going to work. As Gregor attempts to get out of work he cries out, “O God,” “what a demanding job I’ve chosen! (Kafka 428) This is the first glimpse of Gregor’s deteriorating being, and we see that he cares about his work more than anything at that moment. Prior to Gregor’s transformation, he is functioning while is family is not. Given that his first thought involves work rather than his illness, we can begin to assume that his work is what keeps him functioning and efficient. He is driven by the duty to care for his family by paying off the debt that they own. We later find out that the money Gregor has set aside for this debt has not yet been used up, and therefore we can still assist. Gregor functions because of his family’s dependence. Dependence is the key to a functioning society, and the Metamorphosis illustrates the relationship between dependence and functionality. This is representative of the fact that he stays strong by his ability to help, and as soon as he starts to be unable to support his family, he can no longer survive, ultimately leading up to his
