Based off the list of books recommended I chose Crazy Love by Francis Chan who is a Christian and a pastor of a Church in Simi Valley, California. Trying to recreate his own view of how to view or portray ones self in the house of God. This book appealed to me because I do not consider myself a religious person. I have not been to church regularly since I was a little girl around the age of 5. I do believe there is a higher being and I thought it would be intriguing to go outside my comfort zone to read about something I am not that knowledgeable on. I don’t want to be considered ignorant and I know reading will only help form my own opinion. As did the author of this book, Francis Chan, who is simply trying to reach out to people to view the church in a new …show more content…
Chan uses examples and passages as well as videos to watch throughout the book to engage the readers. I find my self as someone who is very opened minded and not closed off to new ideas or forms of belief. I think hearing others point of views and arguments is important in life to truly accept one another. He starts off as well as throughout with the question “Who is god?” “Is there an afterlife?” “How does one get there?” The book questions a lot of unknown answers to those who are not religious in my opinion. He does go about his point of view to help people find a way to let god in to live a life of love. I feel Chan’s perspective when writing this book was to improve going to Church rather then blaming the church for the lack of people believing in God or the church. The title “Crazy Love” makes sense in that believing people who let the lord in as a holy spirit helping, giving, creating and offering your time to less fortunate people. Through the help of God and the church to support you in your ways can help anyone have the ability or potential to live a “Crazy Love” life. Finding happiness, peace or hope in their journey of life. I believe is the end purpose to this book
Dagoberto Gilb, an esteemed author, wrote the short story, “Love in L.A.” Jake is stuck in LA traffic in his ‘58 Buick on Alvarado Street, underneath the overpass of the Hollywood Freeway. He imagines having a better car with a FM radio and crushed velvet interior. He rearends the car in front of him because he is too involved in this daydream of freedom. He checks his car for damage and then goes up to the Toyota. He asks the lady how she is doing and if her car is damaged. He hopes that something is wrong so that they can talk more. He asks her out for breakfast or coffee and she rejects both offers. She asks for his driver's licence, but he claims that he left his wallet in his pants from the previous night. Instead, he writes down a fake
What I liked most about it was reading from two different perspectives and how those different perspectives met through the book.
I can relate this book to my life in many ways; it was easier for me to relate to this book because were both 18 year old girls who want to live life the right way. Also I don’t want to live life trying to be like everyone else, so this was really encouraging to me. A part that helped me was the part about confidence and how important that is. Its important to have confidence in your faith because say you get in a situation you can protect your faith and stand up for what you believe. Another part that I can really apply to my life was how when people were talking about her she didn’t even beg to know. Personally whenever I hear that someone was talking about me, I really want to know what they said! This helped me to learn that why fill my brain with negativity sinful gossip, because that’s not what Jesus would do.
After reading a few of the chapters in "Psychology Through the Eyes of Faith", I feel as if I have learned more in one sitting than many in years of my life. The chapters were not life altering, but simply stated things that I have overlooked. The topics that affected me most were on living with the mysteries of faith, benefits of true rest, and the emotion of happiness. Yes, they are really in no way related, but each of these topics impacted me in a different way, and made me think about what was being presented.
To Know, Worship and love, Rev. P.J. Elliot, James Goold House Publications, 2002, East Melbourne. (Chapters 2- 4)
Living Buddha, Living Christ has opened up my eyes to the world, and it has served as a learning experience for me. I was never really sure what Buddhism was, and I never knew their values were so enlightening. Buddhism has shown me a different outlook to the world around me, and this book has also.
The book I decided to read is called Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. He wrote this book because of what he went through while in the concentration camps. He told about how it psychologically messed with his mind and how he used his education in psychology to make it through what he was going through. The main idea of the book is to show people that you have to have a meaning to life. A person has to find the meaning in life, love, and suffering. This book taught me how to search for the meaning of my life, love, and sufferings.
This was a very touching book. If one word had to be chosen to describe it, this word would be “real.” It was an extremely easy read, but was still able to hold value in its teaching and depth as Randy shared to the best of his ability what knowledge he thought to pass on. One
One thing everyone in world has in common is that we all seek love. Everyone wants to be love and to know the feeling of loving someone unconditionally. Humankind, regardless of geography, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, education or economic status all humans seek love and it is through literature that authors provide in sight, comfort, and oftentimes advice to help us cope with our humanity and our journey of seeking love.
Without the force of love, conflict would cease to exist in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Love specifically seems to be the foundation for misfortune to occur because of how obsessed characters become with reaching for what they cannot have. Unfortunately, love or even lust at times seems to drive the plot and lead to action, most of which are disastrous. It all began with Abelard when he tried to save his daughter Jacquelyn from the wrath of Trujillo and ended up dying anyway. The theme of calamity continues nearly fifteen years later when Belicia throws away family and friends over a man. The man she loved, The Gangster, turned out to be married into the almighty Trujillo family and well, that doesn’t end so well for Beli since she
That’s the preacher’s wife! By Diane Singleton is a great book for women who are planning on marrying a preacher or already married to a preacher. This book is a great encouragement since it gives facts from the bible itself; nothing is greater than the bible itself. This book is a guide for preacher’s wives and family; different things occur in this book that actually take part in the preacher’s family all the time.
One of the primary strengths I found in Is God a Christian by Kirby Godsey, is its relatability. What makes a book interesting to a reader, is their ability to put themselves into the text. Throughout my time reading this book, I constantly felt like I was able to look back into my own life and compare myself to Godsey’s own life. For example, towards the beginning of the book when he mentions "The Plague of Certainty", it was something that truly hit home as throughout my childhood and progression to adulthood I have always held a strong fear of uncertainty.
Love is a powerful force of nature. It is a feeling of passionate and deep affection. It is patient, kind, and honest. It has the ability to consume someone’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It serves as the foundation for numerous songs, poems, shows, and novels. However, the attributes of love in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao are depicted as a curse preying on the insecurities of relationships and a blessing embodying its beauty. Fukú, a curse, strikes the Dominican Republic and its inhabitants through violent acts of revenge, rage, and jealousy. The source of fukú’s power, nonetheless, is derived from the infamous dictator of the Dominican Republic, Trujillo. The dictator not only presided over all political, economic, and social
How can I use this book to help people who are trying to mature in their spirituality? Which approach should I use? I am striving for my Ph.D. in psychology and I am a Christian. I believe integrating psychology and Christianity is vital to developing my education as well as my spiritual growth. I do not, however, agree that it is my right to judge those who do not share my views or try to sway their beliefs.
I read the book The Life of David Brainerd. The material was well written but was kind of depressing to read because of how melancholy he acted. It was presented in a scholarly manner. It has given me a greater understanding of how they were so afraid of whether they “felt” that they were a Christian. I would not really recommend it to another person because it was hard to read without feeling depressed and melancholy. The book was good in some places, but in others it was hard to read and in general it is not something I would pick up to read again.
