In Frederica P. Perera’s article ‘Multiple Threats to Child Health from Fossil Fuel Combustion: Impacts of Air Pollution and Climate Change’ she uses factual data to discuss the effects air pollution brings to adolescents. The importance of this rising issue has allowed her to bring validity to the argument. Despite this, her knowledge and ability to document her evidence, has caused her to stray away from her own thoughts which was not beneficial in connecting with her readers. Perrera discusses how toxic air pollution and climate change is hazardous to everybody, but focuses on the effects it has on adolescents being even more detrimental. To bring awareness to this factual statement, she includes evidence on health and developmental air toxic which may result in adverse birth outcomes. When discussing Respiratory Effects she describes the developmental issue it brings upon childrens lungs. She then transitions in how Malnutrition and Infectious diseases causes disabilities, specifically developing countries. Physical trauma and mental health impacts being another concern for Perrera, here she ties pollution into the cause for climate change which has evidence linked to the likely …show more content…
Some of these are; preterm births, low birth weight, cognitive and behavioral disorders, asthma, other respiratory illnesses, malnutrition, mental illnesses, and those were just some of the many she pinpoints. Specifically targeting poor communities and the environmental issues in their area Perrera narrows down the overall problem. Claiming air pollution and climate change disproportionately affect children in low income populations. Despite her argument on this claim Perrera strays from that point, and diverts the topic back towards health hazards and cause for pollution. Giving more background on that topic may have allowed the readers to have a better understanding on the relevance of that
...d for the general public in order to raise social awareness in preventing polluting the world. It is important to raise social awareness on topics of this nature because it is affecting our world. It is important to consider it as every individual problem and concern rather than see it as an external issue. Saukko chose a whole new approach and technique to get into people’s mind. Usually, authors that want to point out and raise social awareness on issues of this nature, tend to be direct and straightforward about it. However, Saukko has taken it to the next level by approaching the readers in a unique way that will catch more of their attention and hopefully move their emotions on the topic.
Environment says a lot about identity, past, and future. Primary environment has the most effect on shaping a child. According to a US National Library of Medicine research study, ”The physical environment and child development: An international review” it says, “What we do know suggests that the physical environment experienced by children impacts their cognitive and socioemotional development across the lifespan, from the prenatal period through adulthood.” In children this is especially important because a child develops most between the ages of two and five. There are three key elements that contribute to a healthy physical for young children, an adequate standard of living (mainly sufficient food, clothing, and housing), healthcare, and safety from injury, violence, and environmental hazards. In The Other Wes Moore, Wes(a) had
Many people are unknowingly exposed to air pollution and have no idea. Some common causes of air pollution are automobiles, factories, landfills and toxic materials. Air pollution destroys the environment; it causes climate change because it greatly affects the greenhouse effect and it causes acid rain. Acid rain contaminates water and destroys animal’s homes. Air pollution has many effects on people it causes coughing, elevates your risk of asthma, wheezing, it can cause diseases and birth defects. It’s estimated “that seven million people died prematurely in 2012 from exposure to air pollution and that air pollution can cause cardiovascular diseases. The use of incinerators has caused protest movements from the Chinese citizens because they are becoming aware of the air pollution that is being given off from the burning of their trash and the effects it has on their health. There have been many reports of premature births and stillbirths of pregnant women that live near garbage incinerators”( Professional Safety, 2014, p.
... removing and/or stopping the pollution that is emitted into the air from large refineries or factories. In fact, the essay claims that “Of several techniques to remove pollution during industrial coal combustion, perhaps the most effective is ‘scrubbing,’ in which gases are washed in a desulphurizing bath before going into the atmosphere.” This is informative because it shows that there is a way control acid rain. Similarly, the essay stated many different ways in which everyday people could help control the amount of pollution that is discharged into the air. A solution like carpooling so that the amount of pollutants that are emitted into the air are lowered is just one of the many ways discussed in the essay for society to lower the pollution in the air. The informative way in which Robert Collins presented his idea’s added to the effectiveness of the essay.
For example: Risks of asthma complications among children in a southeast Ohio County related to poor air quality, overcrowded living conditions, inability to access health care, high number of animals living in homes, lack of knowledge regarding treatment options, and lack of access to medications as evidenced by increasing numbers of hospitalizations due to asthma
Other ethical questions such as “How should we- all living today evaluate the well-being of the future generations” (Brome). Scientific data shows that Global climate change will have some lasting effects on the planet, ecosystems and humans. There are many “risks associated with climate change such as the risk of pathogen, and disease” this will affect future generations, and animals this is why we should reduce our emissions of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere (Crank and Jacoby). “The consequences of heightening greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere appear after a time lag, often decades or more” (Somerville). Even though the current generations are “benefiting from cheap use of burning fossil fuels, and using the atmosphere as a free dump for our waste products” all humans are obligated to find a cleaner way to live so we don’t set future humans up for failure (Somerville). Somerville also explains that within us burning these fossil fuels, and ignoring the consequences “we sentence our children and grandchildren to cope with the resulting climate change” (Somerville). Also we need to take action to prevent further damage of Earth’s climate not only for the future children of the world but other species that we share the planet with. In the article “The Ethics of Climate Change” by John Broome he states that the answer to this ethical question can be easy one without the need of a sophisticated philosopher (Broome). He say that the answer to ethical climate change questions can be answered by simple common sense thinking (Broome). “You should not do something for your own benefit that will harm another’s” (Broome). He asks the question which is worse the death of a child in 2108 or the death of a child currently living?” (Broome). John Broome argues that we have a responsibility to
PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that we must take action now to control air pollution
Ever since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 18th century, fossil fuels have been used constantly, slowly changing the planet’s atmosphere. According to Mann, “the preindustrial level of CO2 was 280 parts per million (ppm)” (N. pag). He predicts that at current rates, we will reach 560 ppm by the end of the 21st century. To make matters worse, Mann states that 450 ppm is dangerous as it will cause an increase in Earth’s average temperature by 2 Celsius. He recommends taking measures to keep CO2 at less than 405 ppm (N. pag). Mann takes note that in 2013, the value managed to reach 400 ppm (N. pag). It is needless to say that the point of no return is right around the corner. Unfortunately, the affects of pollution are already felt around the world. Pollution can cause many health issues and damage several organs in the body. When people think ...
"As the list of causes of air pollution goes this next offender is number one. The burning of fossil fuels is a part of everday life of every human on the planet. We burn fossil fuels in our cars, fossil fuel is burned to extract fossil...
This is seen to influence health through an exposure to harmful surroundings, coupled with accessibility to health care. Firstly, the environment of an individual is seen to dictate their health through harmful surroundings, which has become more detrimental as a result of, and thus, can be seen in the effects of climate change. Essentially, climate change is recognised as the worldwide phenomena “created predominantly by burning fossil fuel, which add heat-trapping gases to earth’s atmosphere” (NASA, 2018). The significant rise in the average global temperature has resulted in a multitude of effects, in which communities are susceptible to. This effect can be seen in the fact that the direct damage costs to health are estimated to be between US$ 2-4 billion per year by 2030, causing approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year between 2030 and 2050 (World Health Organisation, 2018). Climate change, and hence, harmful surroundings have the ability to influence health initially, as climate change is a result of increased usage of fossil fuels (NASA, 2018). Identified by a significant portion of studies, a rise in fossil fuels leads to an increase in air pollution. This decreased air quality has been found to have detrimental effects on the inflammatory, autonomic and vascular processes within one’s body (Woolf & Aron, 2016), with hundreds of
Thesis: Learning about the Climate Change will help us better understand pollution in the world.
Along side the demand for pollution correction, is the desire to create a sustainable future for the generations to come. Throughout human existence, people have trained and refined their youth in hope that their offspring could live a better life than they once did. Consciousness regarding our involvement with the temperamental cli...
...ffects on human health. These have high negative effects on low income areas, as a result of pollution, visual, oral and air, as well as high levels of overcrowding. The World Health Organisation predicts that in the next 30years most of the world’s population growth will occur in cities and towns of poor countries. This rapid, unplanned and unsustainable pattern of urbanisation, is creating cities into focal points for environmental and health hazards (World Medical Association, 2010).
The favourite activities of the youth when they participate in this campaign is that they prefer to hold activities that are harmful to the earth rather than save the earth. For example, they will go to a concert to celebrate this event in the wrong way. “Just do a”, (2011) says that there are also some families or couples who like to make a candlelight dinner. Indirectly, they have increased carbon dioxide emissions because for all activities that conducted will use transportation and hence it will burn more petrol and release more carbon dioxide (“Just do a”, 2011).Besides, candlelight dinner activities will also have an adverse effect because it will liberate carbon dioxide and air pollutants such as soot when burning the candle . People should think about the pros and cons when they do something. They cannot arbitrarily create activities to celebrate this event which ultimatel...
Are you aware of the detrimental impacts that we have had on our environment? Every second, the Earth is being polluted by poisonous gases, waste products and due to human activities, the world’s climate is dramatically changing. In other words, these impacts do not only harm our environment but also our health. It has been scientifically proven that air pollution causes respiratory diseases and cancer, due to the inhalation of all the harmful chemicals. Water pollution can also lead to typhoid, diarrheal diseases and other waterborne disease, due to the intake of bacteria and parasites. Many people have died due to these health-related illnesses. So why are we still living in this awful condition? Air sustains us and water is a basic necessity, so we should do what we can to prevent pollution. In short, we should protect our environment to ensure a healthy life a...
