The Definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a general term for a group of complex disorders of brain development. Autism effects verbal and nonverbal communication. It can cause intellectual disabilities and physical health issues. Sleep is a major physical health issue affected by autism. Autism affects over 2 million individuals in the United States (autismspeaks.org). Early brain development is a leading cause of autism. The forms included in the Autism Spectrum disorder are: Autistic disorder, Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Asperger’s Disorder. There are many different forms of ASD and is commonly misunderstood; therefore, treatments are never handled correctly.

Autistic disorder is also known as “autism.” Autistic disorder is the main form of autism that is seen in 60% of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Bernier pg. 13). Autism is diagnosed typically at the age of two or older. Before the age of two communicative skills have not been grasped and makes it difficult to diagnose autism. With autism people have trouble with communication skills, social interactions, and normal behaviors. With autistic disorder severely impaired language is detected and people have trouble with intellect. Some people with Autism tend to stay nonverbal throughout their lifetime. Trouble with carrying out activities is also an act of people with autism. With this, children may be inattentive or careless. This is not to be confused with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Autism does not cause an act of violence. This may be caused by many different reasons (bullied during childhood, neglect…etc.)

Autism Spectrum Disorder has many different forms and all have contents of social outcast. This is easiest to detect if you see a declination of a child’s involvement. If any of the signs are shown, the child should see a primary care doctor to evaluate the child to see what is causing the exotic behavior. Misconceptions are unnecessarily common with people with autism. People with ASD are associated with things that have no relation with them. Treatments for autistic spectrum disorder are behavior therapy and medications of the doctor’s preference.
