Bringing up the significant sexualized women's body parts several times throughout a song hints at the go-to selection that every family desires. An inspired artist imagines the joy that would be brought to a family when the radio suddenly surprises them with a song that ends every sentence with an overly informative description of how a woman's body parts look like. Children everywhere would be educated about how great songs with these inferences shape the image of the woman. Bring the light and show what a "real" song sounds like instead of discussing the feeling of strong emotions or vital situations occurring in the real world. Furthermore, there are enough problems with women being materialized that artists need to pitch in and give their share by constantly repeating how "hot" and sexually alluring women's body parts are by making sure to add lines here and there about this topic when composing a song. Additionally, an artist doesn't have the obligation of standing by while other artists take this unique advice but instead take action and produce a song like one that hasn't been written a thousand times
Whitney Houston’s career truly took off in the mid-1980s after releasing her second album, Whitney, which includes her smash hit I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I Wanna Dance With Somebody is such an upbeat tune that includes a heavily edited and enhanced pop melodic line, synthesizers, and the notorious percussion and keyboard tease that begins the tune. Whitney Houston definitely brings this to life through her outstanding vocals that fully showcases her range, elastic vibrato, and precise musical abilities. Houston is most known for her voice that, in my opinion, is still considered extremely iconic and powerful. Houston’s chart-topping single also showcased the type of music that the United States enjoyed and cherished in the late 1980s. This song brings to the surface the anticipation, joy, and free-spirit that the 1980s culture presented to its people, and this hit ties in the importance of music, love, and dancing that stem from the core of Whitney’s pop-hit lyrics. The style of music portrayed in the 1980s consisted of many drum machines, synth-based styles of music, and electronic programming that twisted and manipulated the music into its reputable popular techno/rock characteristics. These characteristics are also seen in Gloria Estefan’s hit, Betcha Say That. Betcha Say That and I Wanna Dance With Somebody explicitly shows how popular energetic anthems were to the musical audience being catered back
In 1980, Whitney Houston was 16 years old and discovered by a New York modeling management. Her fashion photos appeared in the magazines Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Young Miss, and Mademoiselle. While Whitney was struggling with many different things, she continued to further her career in acting. She starred in many famous films such as “The Bodyguard”, which uncovered her signature song “I Will Always Love You” at the end of the movie. Whitney also starred in,“Waiting to Exhale”, “The Preacher’s Wife”, “Cinderella”, and “Sparkle”. The soundtrack for each film arised her music career and generated hit singles for her. Not only was Whitney Houston a great singer, she was very talented in many other different
Objectification of women and misogyny is a common trend in song lyrics, but it is often socially accepted and further perpetuated. Finding a song in which the roles are reversed and a woman depicts a man as a sex object is incredibly difficult because when women try to break norms in the music industry, they are often criticized. In “Blah Blah Blah” by Kesha, she reverses the typical gender roles in song lyrics by objectifying men. Kesha has her own struggles within the male-dominated music industry because her producer sexually abused her and trapped her into a record deal. However, Kesha lost her court case, which illuminates gender issues within the music industry and the larger society. In 2010 when Kesha’s songs were popular, people weren’t aware of her battle with her producer. Instead, her lyrics classified her as more of a party figure and people even saw her as “trashy.” This song
In brief, this paper was based on Whitney Houston's life, what she did, and why was she so influential to American culture. Whitney was a great pop star that had a great talent and throughout her career she won many awards. She is an example to many stars, and she proved
... it brought in sultry rhythms and made some adults worried about over-sexualizing music. However, today it is very common to hear something sexual in a song or verse. In today’s music industry, many women are just as successful as the men.
Throughout our society, gender essentialism has manifested itself in many ways, one of which is through music. Risman (1988:2) writes, “Essentialism is the assumption that basic differences in orientation and personality between men and women are rooted in biology and nature.” Gender essentialism has four key parts: 1) sex differences are based in biology and nature, 2) sex differences are fixed/innate, 3) men have deep unseen properties in common because they look alike, and vice versa with women, and 4) categorization is exclusive (Taylor 2017: Week 1 Day 2). Artists write about what they know; they pull feelings from their heart and their songs relay what the artists’ emotions, whether it be of their hometown, their high school crush, or their experiences. Many artists that came to fame during the twentieth century have a fair share of experiences they share with us in the form of their songs. The twentieth century is comprised of the institution of slavery and its effects, war, gender norms, discrimination based on nationality, sex, race, etc., and countless events that sparked protests and uproars in the United States. Music at this time was a phenomenon, and artists could use it to their advantage. Artists used their music to spread awareness about their cause, influence their listeners, and
There are many instances of degrading and misogynistic lyrics in country music, both historically and contemporarily. There are differences in the lyrics of this genre based on the gender of the artist: gender roles, hypersexuality, and in the resistance or conformity to rigid gender-based stereotypes. The main points of my argument will include how country music lyrics have historically and contemporarily conformed to and defied gender roles and misogynistic stereotypes. This paper will then examine how men are portrayed as sexual oppressors and exploiters to women. As well, I will discuss the lyrical differences between men and women in this genre, including the limiting role of women as objects as opposed to subjects. Next, this essay will address in my paper the unhealthy environment country music lyrics creates for women. Country music lyrics currently and historically portray stereotypical gender roles, and women have limited roles within country music songs as subjects and objects.

Two, the story of development is the story of how to handle anti-social impulses in socially acceptable ways. The environment that Whitney was exposed to at a very young age on a regular basis helped Whitney identify with what she wanted to do with her life. Whitney enjoyed accompanying her mother to shows and singing back-up which also helped influence her decision to be in the music industry. Whitney’s musical intelligence and her daily observation of how her mother Cissy, Dionne and Aretha worked their way through their musical careers also played a major role in her career excelling because she was paying very close attention to everything. I also believe that Cissy’s Houston guidance and Whitney’s passion for music and determination helped Whitney’s career excel at an early age making her a dynamic singer and
Whitney Houston is considered one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin, and Aretha Franklin is her godmother.
The main idea of the themes of the list expresses how women are decreased to subhuman beings, subjects that are not worthy of compassion, love, or respect. Similar to earlier misogynistic music, rap songs with misogynistic content have been widely accepted and allowed by society, generating income for popular artists and the whole music industry. Rappers that are known to utilise such lyrics, get plenty of airtime, either on the radio or on music television stations, such as, MTV. Even though expletive language is often edited on American radio- and TV-stations, the misogynistic overtones are very distinctive and clear to grasp. The majority of artists that explicitly use that kind of lyrics are recognised as great celebrities (i.e., Ice Cube,
Many people associate sexist language with the music genre of rap and hip/hop, but the truth is that sexist language invades every style of music. While it is true that the lyrics to rap songs contain the most obvious derogatory terms towards women, research has found that popular pop music also includes language that can demoralize women or make women seem inferior to men. Women are often referred to as objects and even as possessions by artists, implying that even in this day and age females are still second-class compared to males. Some artists compare women to cars, others use their words to enforce their male dominance. Regardless of how popular an artist or song is promoting sexist lyrics shows that as a whole the public does not have a problem with demoralizing women. Numerous male musicians even use this sort of language as a marketing tactic, knowing that their lyrics will cause a controversy that could inevitably boost album sales.
The lyrics of music play an important part of interpreting the meaning of the song. The roles which women have been allowed by the society to embody have changed drastically. Women may question their roles because of what they see portrayed by popular culture or media. Change in female’s identity can be seen in how women are viewed or how they portray themselves in popular culture specifically through music. In general, music continues to...
