orter’s five forces In determining the competitive intensity and attractiveness of the market, Porter’s five forces is a framework that would help analyze the manufacturing industry of Lincoln Electric and observe the external and internal environmental factors that influence business strategy development for companies within the industry. The five forces are assumed to determine competitive power in a business situation in which these five forces are Supplier Power, Bargaining Power, Competitive Rivalry, Threat of Substitution, and Threat of New Entry. These industries possess characteristics that protect the high profitability of firms, with that said, the threat of entrants within this market is relatively low. This makes entering the market difficult for new startup companies due to the high levels of entry barriers.
Any time the company is looking into software project, there are areas associated with risk such as cost, time and relationship with suppliers. However, for Harley-Davidson, “collocation of suppliers with production facilities and their integration into company’s development process was the essential part of long-term relationship development”. Through a continued focus on collaboration and strong supplier relationships, the company could position itself to achieve strategic objectives and deliver cost and quality improvement over the long-term. Since, at that time company had no centralized system in place to handle relationship with suppliers and consequently, most of company’s time was spent on supplier management activities. For example, reviewing inventory, expediting and data entry. Furthermore, each supplier had different information systems for “Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO), Original Equipment (OE), Parts and Accessories (P&A), and General Merchandising (GM) purchasing activities”. The systems, already provided by supplier, had to be further modified to meet individual need at each location, such as “the OE system at Harley-Davidson’s York, Pennsylvania site was different from the OE system in Kansas City”. However, due to long-standing tradition of gradual change implementation and focus on quality, quick transitions were unwelcome and did not come easy for the company. The size of the project determined how much risk was involved in terms of cost, time, and supplier relationships. The idea of switching to global purchasing system was seen as a threat not only in supplies and production flow interruption, but also in damaged dealer/customer relationships and lost sales. Furthermore, failure of the sy...

The 1920’s was a time of great social, political, and economic change. The early automobile industry was no exclusion. It appears that throughout history, the figures that stand out the most are either worshipped or despised, and there is very rarely an in-between. Henry Ford, an icon of the 1920’s and the early automobile industry is no exemption. Many people love Ford for his innovative and entrepreneurial skills, while on the other hand, Ford is disliked by many due to his association with Anti-Semitism. Regardless of how Ford is viewed, many decisions he made significantly impacted the automobile industry. These decisions included installing the moving assembly line in his plant, and introducing the Five-Dollar Day. Through the implementation of the Five-Dollar Day, Ford was able to drastically change how the Ford Motor Company company operated, and how business would operate for years to come.
Henry Ford and his engineers designed several automobiles, each one designated by a letter of the alphabet: these included the small, four cylinder Model N (which sold for $500), and the more luxurious six-cylinder Model K (which sold poorly for $2500). In October 1908, ...
Imagine for one second that you have an idea, invention, or business plan that you believe could change the world forever. That’s the dream every entrepreneur has, to have an invention or a business that will be successful and change the world. In 1836, a young blacksmith by the name of John Deere, moved to Grand Detour, Illinois from Vermont seeking a new start. In Grand Detour, farmers were having difficulty with the hard, sticky soil sticking to the plow. Deere, being a blacksmith, believed that a plow that was polished and properly shaped could rid the soil by itself. In 1837, that idea became reality, Deere produced the broken saw blade steel plow. The plow caught on quickly and in 1841 the production of the plow was up to a mere 100. Two years later, he moved the company to Moline, Illinois where coal, water power, and cheaper transportation were all readily available. In 1850, roughly 1600 plows were produced, along with other pieces of equipment to go with the plow; starting the world renowned company, Deere & Company or more commonly known as, John Deere. Every entrepreneur has a dream for a life changing invention or a business opportunity that will change the world, John Deere happened to invent the steel plow at the right time to help America expand and develop and while leaving a company with a legacy that has continued to last for more than 176 years.
