In consideration of the complexity and ambiguity of Gary Snyder’s two poems “For/From Lew” and “For Lew Welch in a Snowfall,” the conclusion can be made that the two share a level of emotion as well as subject matter. Whereas the first focuses on the past as well as metaphorical representation, the second seems to complement these details with reality and what is to be assumed as real life experiences. Taking favor in the stories of metaphorical practice, “For/From Lew” holds a deeper, unrevealed meaning compared to that of its counterpart that reminisces on memories and potential regret. In today’s society we lose interest in the basic forms of communication. Rather it’s checking how someone’s doing, making sure someone gets home safe, or even checking on a friend who is known to be depressive, we brush the thought away in the assumption that everything will resume to perfection as expected. The author’s words stated “you didn’t shoot yourself after all” (2). These words can easily be interpreted as the author assuming his prediction is correct, that nothing bad will happen and tomorrow is just another day. By translation, the way it’s worded can be interpreted as Lew begging Snyder to warn everyone to care again. The worst possible thing can happen to anyone rather it be the person themselves or someone associated with them. By taking this interpretation and applying it to the title “For/From Lew,” consider the fact the Lew is the representation of the depressive person and/or cherished one. Instead of using words to describe a person with psychological and/or any other problems, Lew is the alternative metaphor or representation for all of that category. The poem suggests for any other Lew’s out there, not by name of course but by relatability in situation, this poem is to recognize them. In order for the relatability to be able to be recognized, it comes from the author projected in Lew’s words.
