For decades and decades there has not been many huge advancements in football helmet technology. Helmets started off as leather shells that did not even have a face mask on them. In early 1900s only few players worn soft leather caps as optional headgear, by the 1920s headgear advanced to become hardened leather helmets and they were worn in order to increase the level of protection from injuries. During the 1920s and 1930s the helmets were not required to wear, but that changed in 1939 when John T.Riddel came up with the first plastic helmet, unfortunately the plastic became rare during World War II.
