In the article, the survey's result of the food workers, they don't get paid at their sick day, and they need to work when they are sick. The food worker has to work when they sick because he/ she need money to live. According to Shallcross, "...[79] percent of food system workers did not have paid sick days or did nor know whether they did. Similar to the current study, the 2012 report also found that 53 percent of workers had worked when they were sick." When the food worker is sick, they touch the food then the germs will transport to the food. Also, the customers buy the food and eat; then, they will be sick too. Every customer doesn't want to be sick after eating the food. It is a good quote for my argument essay because I am writing
In the article by Wendell Berry titled “The Pleasures of Eating” he tries to persuade the readers of the necessity and importance of critical thinking and approach to choosing meals and owning responsibility for the quality of the food cooked. He states that people who are not conscious enough while consuming products, and those who do not connect the concept of food with agricultural products, as people whose denial or avoidance prevents them from eating healthy and natural food. Berry tries to make people think about what they eat, and how this food they eat is produced. He points to the aspects, some which may not be recognized by people, of ethical, financial and
...pened my eyes to the health risks of the food I consume. There is a lot of health risks associated with the foods on the shelves at the supermarket. A food product I ate as a child was Lunchables. At the time I just thought the food was good. Although, now that I am aware of what I put in my body I try to look at the ingredient and the food products I consume before I consume them. The book also informed me of the deceitfulness of people in order to make a profit. A prime example in Chapter eleven is the Kraft Company. The Kraft Company state they want to decrease the amounts of salt, sugar and fat in their products. On the other hand, Kraft creates new products with an increased amount of these ingredients. Many companies state that they try to fulfill the desires of consumers. This idea is wrong. The consumers study what our body craves and uses it against us.
In 1968, Lenoir Dining Hall at UNC Chapel Hill served food to nearly 2,000 students and faculty a day. The lunch ladies managing the cafeteria worked through long hours, short wages and demeaning work conditions. Though state workers, the food workers were neither represented by a union nor were their grievances acknowledged by their oppressive supervisors. Food service was tough enough for food workers at the university because students and faculty did not typically regard the non-faculty employees with much respect or recognition. This lack of respect or recognition was amplified by high racial tensions of the Civil Rights era and the reality that most non-faculty employees were African Americans serving a predominantly white student population.
During 1951 Parson was the first to debate about the sick role. According to Parson, there are the few expectations which need to be met before considering individual sick. Firstly, individual should not cause their own health problem an example could be by eating a high-fat food which leads to overweight and linked to type 2 diabetes. An individual receives a less sympathy. Secondly, individual who is sick must adamant to get well otherwise will see as faking the illness. Thirdly, an individual illness should be confirmed by a physician so they can follow the instruction. The relationship between the physician and the patient is hierarchical where the instruction is provided by the physician and followed by the
In Michael Pollan’s book In Defense for Food, the chapter “Escape from the western diet” argues that people whom eat food from the “western diet” are more likely susceptible to chronic diseases than people who consume food from the traditional diets. Pollan also uses Gorgy Scrinis to support him as he includes in the excerpt, Scrinis says that we as humans should avoid food that is more industry than nature, meaning that we should stay away from foods that have been overly processed. Pollan also observes that the people who consume more of the western diet are much more vulnerable to getting sick, thus ending up in the hospital, Pollan asserts that this is how the hospitals make more money, the more sick, the more people want to see the doctor.
Working seven days a week for about eight hours made the workers fatigue. Having .75 cents on average an hour was not worth the working based on the harsh w...
“Don’t Blame the Eater” is an article by David Zinczenko that explains to Americans, specifically overweight young Americans, about the risks eating at fast food restaurants and its cause of affecting one’s health. In his article, he tries to address the issue about America’s food industries by using literal devices such as tone, logos, ethos, diction, and organization in order to spread his message. He begins his article by addressing the topic and as he continues writing, he supports his topic by writing about personal experience and moves onto the reasons why his topic in a serious issue. Although he shows an overall clear progress, he does tend to have a few problems with his writing that could be improved.
n this research paper, I will discuss how bad eating habits, poor nutritional choices, and economics affect the health of the body. I chose this topic because of my quest to improve my health and my family’s health. I am discovering I must consider the above aspects to improve our overall health and nutrition. I discovered the food we consume gives our body the nutrients and information needed to function. Educating yourself on the effects of the food you consume is key to maintaining healthy eating.
In this article “Fast Food and Personal Responsibility” (2003) which was written by Ninos P. Malek, Malek tries to argue and show people that it’s not entirely the fast food industries’ fault that people are obese or sick . He argues using 3 different supporting examples; first he says that, “High school students blaming their poor diets on school cafeteria” (Malek, 2003, p.309). Most student tend do that, but actually most cafeterias sell healthy and unhealthy food but people always need something to blame and never hold themselves the responsibility for their own action, secondly he says that no one is putting people under gun point to make them buy fast food (2003, p.309). That’s actually true but still he forgot to mention the fact that they are trying to brain wash people into buying their food through their erroneous advertisements. Third and last Malek tries to compare smoking to fast food, because back then tobacco companies were sued too for almost the same reason which is about health. Malek’s argument was precise because people need to learn to take responsibility for their own actions and should know that when they buy fast food they are weighing their own costs and benefits. But he didn’t show the immoral and unethical things the fast food industries were doing by using erroneous advertisements. The fast food industries shouldn’t be held accountable for this because everyone has a freedom of choice and they can choose whether to eat it or no.
If the health of employees can help or hinder a company, then why do companies still have sick days? With the “on the go” lifestyles, how can we not question the health of employees and their families. Today we have high stress jobs, rush hour traffic, and demanding schedules. Being healthy and fit is the way to conquer tomorrow.

Food borne illnesses are caused by consuming contaminated foods or beverages. There are many different disease-causing microbes, or pathogens. In addition, poisonous chemicals, or other harmful substances can cause food borne illnesses if they are present in food. More than two hundred and fifty different food borne illnesses have been described; almost all of these illnesses are infections. They are caused by a variety of bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can be food borne. (Center 1)
The third weakness is the fact that food tests, inspections, and the detection of contaminants are taken seriously only after an outbreak of some food-borne diseases, food poisoning, or deaths. The increase in the number of food establishments or outlets such as cold stores, hypermarkets, and supermarkets reported by the Public Health Director has also made inspection and control mo...
The most obvious problem a sick employee risks is spreading their illness. Suppose a sick employee shows up to work and spreads their illness to many of their coworkers. This now means that multiple people in the business are in the dilemma of whether to miss work and get behind or show up and spread their sickness. Not only will this affect the coworkers, but it will also put customers and the rest of the public at risk. Statistics have shown that when people are sick, they aren’t near as focussed as their usual self. This leads to the outcome of an unproductive day from a drained employee. A third factor that plays a role on those who come to work sick is a longer recovery time. If you do not allow your body time to heal from an illness, it will take much longer, thus implying there will be many unproductive days ahead for the ill
