The Florida Black Bear The Florida Black Bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) is a subspecies of the American Black Bear which ranges throughout the state of Florida as well as other surrounding southern states. This large mammal is known for its black fur and its inhabitation in forested areas such as Big Cypress National Preserve.
History
In 1896, naturalist C. Hart Merriam first scientifically classified the American black bear (Ursus americanus) in Florida. He thought that the large mammal’s long skull and highly arched nasal bones differentiated it from black bears in other areas. Their extrusive canine teeth are used for their meaty diet. When black bears walk, their entire foot hits the ground with their plantigrade feet, each paw having five short, curved digits, with non retractable claws. The distinctive manner of the black bear is pacing, meaning the hind foot is placed somewhat in front of the track of the forefoot. Its eyes are small and its ears are round and elevated. The color of the Florida black bear’s coat is persistently black. However, the summer molt of outer hair sometimes creates a brownish appearance. Only about 1/3 of them have a white chest blaze.
Florida black bear adult males weigh 251-352 lbs. and adult females weigh 132-180 kgs. Though, depending on a high calorie diet, they can grow even larger. The largest male Florida black bear recorded was 624lbs. killed in southwest Florida and the largest female was 400lbs. killed in northwest Florida.
Distribution
Back in the day, the Florida black bear inhabited most of Florida, besides the Keys, as well as the southern parts of Georgia and Alabama. Two hundred years of deforestation and hunting later, they attained an all time low point in population and distribution by the 70s.
