Election Day arrives and we’re ready to vote. And the winner we say is the one who takes all. But when 13% goes down to point two. Is our system as fair as we believe it to be? First Past the Post is a common single winner voting system used in such countries as Canada, Nigeria, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, where whoever wins a plurality (the most) of first choice votes, wins. In First Past the Post, parties do not need a majority of votes, merely more than their competitors. Due to this parliament often does not represent the will of the masses. After years of wars and fighting, people have died for equality and fairness, how do we still support a system that prevents that. The spoiler effect normally happens in result of a two-party system. After a while of people having to cope with this two-party system, a new party may decide to run again now unless you dislike the two main parties or candidates evenly, this can be a major crisis. For example here in the UK the majority of citizens may prefer either Labour or Conservative, even if they don’t agree with all of the policies of one party. It’s the same with Republicans and Democrats in the USA. Moreover, when a new party begins to run which has some similar values to one of the previous parties the votes begin to split. This can lead to the party that is not that widely supported but has quite different policies than the others, winning even though the majority of people disagree with its policies. In fact, it is a voting system which can form a stable, conscience government which, for the most part, stops extremist parties coming to power. In fact, it is for this reason that I believe it would have definitely been of assistance to Germany in 1933, as its weak government was one of the main reasons why Hitler was able to take over so easily. Also, it would be beneficial in situations such as in Israel, where disagreement between religious and political extremists within the coalition delay decision-making. Recently the fight for a new voting system has started again. Politicians were called to discussion by a petition signed by the citizens of the UK. Our thought, opinions and views can make a difference if we stay educated and speak up. And maybe one day in the near future we will have a voting system that is fair, that promotes equality.
