How to Make a Great Impression on the First Date Introduction Humans crave human interaction, more specifically people desire love from a special someone. Dating is a common affair for people of all ages, so it can be helpful to have tips to have a successful first date. Understanding the things that create a lasting impression on the first date will help you enjoy dating, and reduce the stress that can sometimes come with dating. Perform personal hygiene. Correspondingly, brush your teeth and hair. Fix your hair nicely with gel, or doing a hairstyle you like if you’re a woman. By doing your hair, it shows your date that you took the time to look handsome or pretty for your date. It is equally important to put deodorant and perfume or cologne on. Additionally, make sure to shave your stubbly facial hair, or legs. 3. Dress to impress. When trying to decide what to wear for your date think about the occasion and location the date will take place. Once you have taken into account of whether formal or informal attire is appropriate, then pick an outfit that makes you feel and look great. Not to mention, make sure you look appropriate, do not show to much ladies! An example of a casual outfit would be nice jeans and a nice shirt. On the other hand, a more formal outfit could be a dress for ladies. 4. Choose a fun date event. It is important that you and your date choose a fun activity together that will allow you and your date to talk and have fun at the same time. Your first date should not be an event where there is no originality, or you cannot talk to your date to get to know them. In other words, do not go on a movie date because there is no talking. Introduce yourself. You have finally got to meet your date. A firm handshake, eye contact, a smile, and “Hi, I’m ___ works wonders, and leaves a lasting impression. Having a firm handshake, is nonverbal cues that you are confident, honorable, composed, and driven. As a matter of fact, feel free to add your own personalization into your introduction to make it more special. It can take at least 12 minutes to an hour to make a decision on what you or your date think of each other, so start it out great! 3. Do not interrogate. We have probably all been guilty at some point of wanting to know as much as possible about our date, so we can decide if they are compatible to you. Instead of interrogating, go along with the conversation, and ask why or opinion questions. Why or opinion questions can really get a person talking. For example, when your date tells you about their profession, ask them why they went into that profession. Another example, could be why or what made you decide to do that. 4. Be present. Focus on really listening to what your date is saying and make sure you are performing the nonverbal and verbal cues to show your date that you’re listening. Some of the nonverbal cues are eye contact, smiling, nodding of head, good and welcoming posture, your body faced towards your date, and leaning in to listen.
