The City of Detroit, Michigan, seems to be a city on the decline in America. Job prospects some of the lowest in the country and one of the only cities to be shrinking, rather than growing. There are a lot of problems Detroit is facing, one of them is there incidence rate for fires. Detroit is the number one city in America for house fires, not to mention their high rate of fires in the many vacant buildings throughout the city. There are many socioeconomic factors with the city that make the incident rates rise, and response less effective. The most pressing issue facing Detroit, in regard to fire, is the steady amount of burning vacant or delipidated buildings, and second to that is the high rate of home fires. The issue lies in the decline of the city. With the population shrinking from what it once was, industry moving away, and the highest rate of unemployment in the country, it may not be completely shocking that the whole metropolitan area has trouble keeping up. Amount of vacant buildings is on the rise and number of firefighters, and funding for fire departments, are on the decline. Emergency responder response time was once abysmal, and although it has improved with some effort, the city still has room for improvements elsewhere. It has to be hard to keep pace with a city that has a burnt down building on every other block, while fire stations are closing, staffing is not improving, and fire hydrants are falling into disrepair. There are many contributing factors to Detroit’s fire epidemic, combinations of arson, poor fire prevention and education, and so on. “An arson epidemic, the closure of fire stations and failing hydrants have taken a heavy toll on Detroit’s neighborhoods.
