Fire during School Picnic
JAY MOUNTAIN: Fire breaks out during elementary school picnic. Three teenage boys turned heroes.
“Those boys rushed in without any second thought”, said teacher Jerry Cook at the scene. Yesterday during a school picnic a fire broke out in the old church on Jay Mountain. Three teenage boys rescued children who were stuck in the church that was on fire . “They were amazing,” said a construction worker nearby.
It all began when the three boys Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Dally Winston were driving back from lunch. They saw the church ablaze with panicked people surrounding the scene. Two of the boys, Johnny and Ponyboy jumped out of the car and asked Mr. Cook what had happened. He told them that his class was on a picnic and the church caught on fire. Mr. Cook also told them that some of the kids were missing and he could hear them screaming from inside the church. That’s when the three teenagers sprung into action.
Johnny broke into a window with Ponyboy following him. They dashed towards the back of the church where the children were stranded. The boys started picking up the kids and handing them to the third teen Dally, who was outside the window. After they had finished getting out all of the children safely, Johnny and Ponyboy

When Ponyboy came out of the church Dally started hitting him, attempting to put out the flames on him. Johnny was still trapped in the church so Dally went in to rescue him. Johnny and Dally both made it out, but suffered critical injuries. The paramedics transported them and Ponyboy to the hospital. Ponyboy was released from the hospital later in the day with minor burns. While Dally had a burned arm and will be staying for a couple of nights. Johnny is in critical condition with major third degree burns in addition to a broken back he received from the collapsing
Ponyboy was a bad kid, he fought against Socs and he even smoked a weed, which is a cigarette. Later on he got into worse trouble and had to hide. He wanted to change and be a different person. While he hid he was scared and frightened and was beginning to think of how he was doing in life, and his thoughts were not very well. After the church incident, he began to change a little.
Luckily, all of the children were saved by the time the church was totally burned down. Ponyboy Johnny and Dallas were taken to the hospital. Ponyboy was released after a few hours and Dallas has a badly burned arm. However, Cade is in a critical condition. He has a burned back from when the roof caved in and he is paralyzed
Dally walks away with rage and then Johnny and Ponyboy sit with the girls. Two-Bit arrives with 3 other Greasers to walk home the Soc girls. On the way Randy and Bob the drunken boyfriends meet the Greasers. They girls leave the Greasers and get in the Socs’s car to prevent a fight. Ponyboy is late getting home, so his brother Darrel is furious with him, Ponyboy sick of Darrel’s constant criticism and enquiry, Ponyboy yells back at him.
He is smart, and gets good grades in school. This is purposefully mentioned several times within the story, and people tend to be surprised to learn that he is a Greaser. In addition, some Greasers are nicer than people tend to think. When the church burned down, Ponyboy and Johnny run in to save the children without a second thought. They acted with selflessness, putting the safety of the children above their own. In the ambulance on the way to the hospital, Ponyboy is asked if he and Johnny are "professional heroes". He responds by telling the entire story of how they're Greasers and Johnny is wanted for murder, shocking the man in the ambulance. It is difficult for him to believe that a group of Greasers would do something so heroic. Johnny dies as a direct result of their actions, but neither Ponyboy nor Johnny regretted what they
When Ponyboy, Dally, ponyboy, went back to the church that had kids inside and was about to catch on fire he followed pony running behind him .When Ponyboy was running into the church that was on fire Ponyboy said “ I didn’t realize that johnny had been right behind all the way” (92). This shows that johnny was courageous enough to run into a burning church. While on the other hand Dally did not run into the church after them. Instead of following ponyboy and Johnny, Dally said “Get back in here before I beat your head in” (90) Which showed that dally is not as brave as Johnny and ponyboy. This I believe was a major difference between Dally and
Pony also got jumped by the Socs in the beginning and Darry slaps Pony. When they rescue the kids from the burning church, Pony stays in the hospital. Pony also talks in his sleep asking for Soda and Darry. Soda has a girlfriend named Sandy and she ends up getting pregnant and moving away for a while. “You in love with Sandy? What’s it like?”(Hinton18) While Pony visits Johnny, he has trouble getting to him because of the nurses.
Ponyboy talks about him as having ", an elfish face with high cheekbones and a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. His hair was so blond, and he didn't like haircuts, or hair oil either, so it fell over his forehead in wisps and kicked out in the back in tufts and curled behind his ears and along the nape of his neck. His eyes were blue, blazing ice, cold with a hatred of the whole world. “He works as a jockey, and funnily doesn't rig his races; it's "the only thing Dally did honestly." Even though he is only seventeen years old, "the fight for self-preservation had hardened him beyond caring." He set the stereotype for the greasers its scary to the others how scary he is. In the events when Johnny killed Bob dally helped out the boys and gifted them one handgun and $100. Ponyboy realizes the truth after Johnny's death. When he tries to make sense of Dally's reaction to Johnny's death, it dawns on him, "Johnny was the only thing that Dally
Dally did something to save one of his gang members too. It was Dally who pulled Johnny out from the burning church. Johnny would have died instantly if Dally did not get Johnny out of the church. When Dally was shot, Ponyboy remembered the things Dally had done for them.
Johnny and Ponyboy are good friends and this friendship really shined when Johnny saved Ponyboy by killing Bob. They were jumped by 5 Socs and Ponyboy spat in Bob’s face and one of the Socs stuck his face in the fountain. He would’ve drowned if Johnny had not done what he did. Before all this happened, we must talk about when Johnny agreed to run away with Pony without hesitation. Darry had slapped Pony for coming home late and the pair ran away shortly after. Johnny and Ponyboy ran away with the help of Dally, which we will get into later, and got to an abandoned church that caught fire by one of their cigarettes. There were kids inside the church and they jumped inside to save them. Johnny told Pony to jump out before him and in the process Johnny broke his back and got severally burned. To cut things short I think Johnny is a real hero and I hope he does not die from his injuries from the
Ponyboy and Johnny met up with Dally under a streetlight. They all went to buy Cokes. They ended up stealing some Kools as well. It was dark outside and Dally enjoys breaking laws, so they snuck into “the Nightly Double drive-in movie(20)”. While there, they met two Soc girls by the name of Cherry and
They go to a park and get jumped by a gang of Socs they had conflict with earlier that day. Ponyboy is held under the water of a fountain and to save his friend, uncharacteristically, Johnny stabs the leader, Bob, with a knife. Bob ultimately ends up dying right there next to the fountain. To escape the police, they run away to an old abandoned church with the help from Dally, another in their gang. They spend days there with only baloney, cards, and a copy of Gone with the Wind. Ponyboy says, “The next four days were the longest days of my life” (75). They both had to sleep on the hard, stone floor (67) with no blankets. When they ran away, it insists that they believed they had no choice and soon realized what a ghastly experience it would be. Spending their days on repeat, doing the same thing, eating the same thing, can become redundant. For them it was hard to stay inside the church even though fear kept them
Ponyboy has a dispute with his brother Darry and ends up running away to the park with Johnnycake. There, Ponyboy and Johnnycake get into a fight with Randy, Bob, and three other members of the Socs. The Socs try to down Ponyboy, so Johnnycake stabs Bob with a knife and ends up killing him. Ponyboy and Johnnycake run to a party where they meet up with Dallas, one of their close friends. He gives them a gun, money, and tells them to get a train out of town to an abandoned church. They are told to stay there until Dallas comes to get them.
Breaking news! Recently there has been a fire in the small town of Windrixville, nearly killing four young children and two teenage boys. In this tragic incident, three young men rescued some young children from a burning church. Apparently, the children were playing in the church when it was set on fire. Our three heroes, Johnny Cade, Dallas Winston, and Ponyboy Curtis heard the voices of the kids from inside the church and they knew something had to be done. They were willing to sacrifice their lives for the sake of these children’s lives.
Ponyboy Curtis struggles growing up as a poor youth with his two brothers. One night while he is out with Johnny, Ponyboy is attacked by the Socs. Johnny ends up killing one of the Socs. They both flee from the scene before the news gets out. They are caught in a fire and Johnny and Ponyboy become heroes for saving some children. The story has a tragic end for Johnny but Ponyboy realises that he is fortunate, having family and friends that love him
After the church fire Ponyboy comes to the realization of many things. Two-Bit and Ponyboy are eating at a restaurant known as Tasty Freeze when Randy asks to speak with him. Ponyboy tells Randy, ¨Maybe you would have done the same thing, maybe a friend of yours wouldn’t have. It’s the individual¨(115). He finds out that you cannot define someone based on of they are part of the Socs or the greasers. Furthermore, he finds out that every one is a individual and that means that just because he is a part of a certain group it does not mean that they are all going to react or perceive a situation in the same exact way. In addition, he say this to Randy because when there was a fire in the church Dally was not willing to risk his life to save someone else's when Johnny and Ponyboy were more than willing to help the kids. This shows event shows how all Greasers and Socs are not the same. In the beginning of the novel Ponyboy believed Darry disliked him and thought he was a nuisance. However, later on at the hospital Ponyboy tells Darry, “I’m sorry” (98). Ponyboy’s words expose how he feels bad for thinking Darry disliked him all along when in truth he loved him more than words could describe. He realizes that Darry fears losing another family member that is why he is so overprotective of Ponyboy. Hence, proving Ponyboy is clearly a dynamic character.
