Part I: The Purpose of the Report and the Research Experience The main purpose of this report was to evaluate and research the financial information about Priceline during the past five years to evaluate the future developing of the company. In order to perform my research, I used Priceline’s 10 K report to get the financial information that was needed for this research. In addition, I used the company’s website where I found basic information about Priceline history and also other businesses that Priceline’s group owns. Yahoo finance and Priceline’s website assisted me with their presentation of financial charts and analysis of them. I found very useful Forbes website, where I was able to find out a lot of information about Priceline and its subsidiaries. Social responsibility and Ethics practiced by Priceline were part of the research and its website was very useful in my research. Also the textbook helps me with basic concepts and, played an important role in finding information. Yahoo and Google were the search engines that I widely used to find information about Priceline, and its direct competitors such as Expedia. Part II: Introduction and History Priceline is a business service industry and according to the website Funding Universe, Priceline, is an Internet-based company that created a ticketing service called "Name Your Own Price" that matched customers to airlines. The company was formally created in 1997, and his president was Jay Walker The company headquarters is located in Connecticut (“Priceline.com Incorporated History”). Return on sales is decreasing and is below the industry average, but the goods news is that sales and profits have been increasing each year. However, costs of goods are increasing and more inventory is left over each year causing the return on sales to decrease. For 1995, it was 1.7% which is less than the average of 2.44% but is a lot higher than the bottom 25% of companies as seen in exhibit 3, which actually have negative sales return of 0.7%. Return on equity is increasing each year and at a higher rate than industry average. In 1995, it was 20.7%, greater than the average of 18.25% and close to the highest companies in exhibit 3, of 22.1% showing that the return in investment in the company is increasing, which is good for the owner.

Spirit Airlines has long been considered an unorthodox airline. They, of course, address all four P’s in their marketing strategy; however, they focus a large amount of their effort on price and promotion. They focus on cutting price through “unbundling”. They focus on promotion through taking advantage of social issues and breaking news. Many advertisements and deals promoted by Spirit have given the public a definite shock-factor. Spirit has made two objectives very clear: they are furious at getting the customer the lowest fare possible by any means necessary, and they will similarly use any means necessary to get those potential customers to notice those fares. Such a blatant marketing strategy works. Even going up against some big competition, Spirit finds ways to be competitive and successful in flagrant fashion.

Although JetBlue focuses on service value through highly productive personnel and aircraft, potential consumers are still interested in value when they fly; the price aspect of the marketing mix. Customers are interested in quality service at a reasonable price.
Any successful business owner or investor is constantly evaluating the performance of the companies they are involved with, comparing historical figures with its industry competitors, and even with successful businesses from other industries. To complete a thorough examination of any company's effectiveness, however, more needs to be looked at than the easily attainable numbers like sales, profits, and total assets. Luckily, there are many well-tested ratios out there that make the task a bit less daunting. Financial ratio analysis helps identify and quantify a company's strengths and weaknesses, evaluate its financial position, and shows potential risks. As with any other form of analysis, financial ratios aren't definitive and their results shouldn't be viewed as the only possibilities. However, when used in conjuncture with various other business evaluation processes, financial ratios are invaluable. By examining Ford Motor Company's financial ratios, along with a few other company factors, this report will give a clear picture of how the company is doing now and should do in the future.
Thanks to these factors, pricing becomes one of the primary uses with which hotels attract customers. However, due to customers’ independent nature, there influence over industry players is limited. In the high-end segment of hotels, price influence becomes even less as hotels find it easier to differentiate themselves from the competition and customers become less price sensitive coming to expect higher prices as a symbolism of superior quality and services. Lastly, corporate business and tour operators can exert more influence due to their large purchases but this affect is of a limited nature and does not extend across the whole
After enjoying much initial success by utilizing the internet and a patented technology which connected buyers to sellers, priceline began to suffer growing pains early on. Initially priceline was successful because it concentrated solely on airline seats. Airlines were more than happy to fill empty seats for any price rather than fly with an undersold plane. Copying its success, priceline quickly followed into offering hotel rooms, another commodity in which hotels would rather book a room at a minimal price than have it empty. As priceline spread out to encompass more areas such as home mortgages and groceries, it faced a diluted image to shoppers. Some ventures were huge resource drains to the company both financially and in talent. As employees tried fixing what was wrong with problem areas, profitable areas such as hotels and airfare began to receive direct competition from the airlines and hotels themselves as well as other websites such as expedia.com.

Pricing is an important aspect of every business. Chief Financial Officer’s (CFO) use pricing to create financial projections, establish a break-even point, and calculate profit and loss margins (Power Point, 2005). It is the only element in the marketing mix that produces revenue. Price is also one of the most flexible elements of the marketing mix as it can be changed very quickly. This is usually done to beat competitor prices in an attempt to fix the product’s market value position very low (Anderson & Bailey, 1998). After all, high prices make it difficult to become the market share leader. The leading US retailer, Wal-Mart, is an expert at low product pricing as evident in 2004 with $250 billion dollars in sales to their 138 million weekly shoppers. However, they are also responsible for reducing prices so low that it drives specialty stores out of business. This is the effect Wal-mart has had on many toy stores and has almost closed the doors of the famous toy store Toys “R” Us Inc.
