Film noir, also known as “black film” in French, was a trend in films at around the 1940s to the late 1950s. Noir films were usually filmed in black and white with stories based around crime featuring characters such as a detective and a femme fatale. Film noir mixed these stories with filmic elements such as expressionistic lighting, shadows and odd camera angles to create dark and mysterious environments. However, some say today that film noir is not a genre but a type of style of film, which one it is a matter of debate. First of all, what is genre? Simply put the semantics of a film are elements such as costume, acting, cinematography etc. Whereas syntactic focuses more on the narrative elements of the film by putting the semantics together. Through these conventions we can determine if a certain film is indeed a film noir. Trying to choose a genre for a film can be limiting however and can sometimes limit the creativity of a film due to guidelines genres can create. Giving a film a genre can sometimes help with determining what elements need to be thought about when creating the film. However, because of this, filmmakers might be forced to stay away from new concepts and can limit what creativity filmmaker’s may have. This can either be seen as a good or bad thing. There are many classic noir films out that to be watched and films of today take the conventions used in film noir to help make their films great. Through the use of semantic and syntactic conventions of genre we can create films with guidelines to help make sure an audience will know what they are going to watch. However, this can impact the creativity of the maker. There are people out there wanting more noir films but unfortunately they aren’t as popular as they once were. Perhaps the standard of filmmaking today has looked past the older techniques used in film noir. Last but not least, Genre is a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, and technique. Aside from the character structure the genre can be compared and contrasted in these two movies. The movie Bicycle Thieves genre is a mystery/crime and Big Deal on Madonna Street is a comedy. Films that are classified as being in the film noir genre all share some basic characteristics. There is generally a voice-over throughout the film in order to guide the audience's perceptions. These movies also involve a crime and a detective who is trying to figure out the truth in the situation. This detective usually encounters a femme fatale who seduces him. However, the most distinctive feature of the film noir genre is the abundance of darkness.
Film Noir is a genre of distinct and unique characteristics. Mostly prominent in the 40s and 50s, the genre rarely skewed from the skeletal plot to which all Film Noir pictures follow. The most famous of these films is The Big Sleep (1946) directed by Howard Hawks. This film is the go to when it comes to all the genre’s clichés. This formula for film is so well known and deeply understood that it is often a target for satire. This is what the Coen brothers did with 1998’s The Big Lebowski. This film follows to the T what Film Noir stands for.
The horror genre of film captives the frightfulness of individual fear, horror is the only genre that is meant captive the terror of the audience. The horror- the genre has been around well over one hundred- years there has been an extension of different types of horror and how the audience perceives horror. Many would even argue that horror films often reflect the fear of society in that certain time period. The evolution of horror reflects the evolution of society’s fear.

The gangster film genre concentrates on stories whose principal struggle is between criminals and the society they live in. This genre typically emphasizes a cautionary tale that is demonstrated by the main character who commits crimes (Barsam and Monahan, 2013.) Also, this genre is often blended with film noir, a distinct genre made discernible by its mood of pessimism, and fatalism. The film, Bonnie and Clyde directed by Arthur Penn in 1967, is an example of a genre-bending gangster film due to its distinct genre conventions of story formula, setting, and character types that step outside of the typical gangster film genre conventions.

Defining a film genre is in some ways difficult and simplistic. Every genre has stated what would define its boundaries. The difficult part is finding one that is solidified by the movies in the genre. The stated definition that this paper will digest and regurgitate is that a Western is a film which is set in the American frontier west. The typical time setting is somewhere in the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century(Dirks, 1). They glorify the past-fading values and aspirations of the mythical by-gone age of the American West(Dirks, 1). Over time, however, Westerns have been redefined, re-invented and expanded, dismissed, re-discovered, and spoofed. For the example of the news broadcast it could be suggested that our society tends to put more faith in the word of a smartly dressed 'well-educated', middle-aged man or women standing four or five feet away, looking us in the eye, rather then an unconventionally dressed teenager with a strong regional accent within one or two feet of us- a distance that normally signifies intimacy or aggression.
