Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” has an underlying theme that is reflected in his imagery and figurative language. As the conversation between Brown and the traveller ends, this theme is evident in the way Brown perceives the traveller’s encouragement to continue along the path. The devil pressures Brown using words that seem to “spring up in the bosom of his auditor” instead of being his own thoughts (215). This suggests that he has given this spiel to others, and it can be inferred that the devil says these things to many of the people he converts. Nathaniel Hawthorne is a nineteenth-century American writer of the Romantic Movement. Hawthorne was born is Salem, Massachusetts, and this is the place he used as the setting for some of his works: such as "The Scarlett Letter", "the Blithedale Romance" and "Young Goodman Brown". In writing, Hawthorne was known for his use of allegory and symbolism, which made his stories a joy for everyone to read. Hawthorne was said to be the first American writer who was conscious of the failure of modern man to realize his full capacity for moral growth. Brown was quick to go on his foreboding quest, knowing what his meeting with the devil may lead to, and only when threatened and scared attempted to turn back to hold on to both Faith physically and psychologically. Whether his journey into the forest was an illusion or not, Brown’s perception of faith in society have been dramatically altered, as he may have lost all faith in humanity.
During Goodman Brown’s journey, he recognized Goody Cloyse, his catechism teacher, the preacher, and Deacon Gookin is going to the devil’s meeting. Goodman becomes unforgiving of others and believes only evil can be created from evil and there is nothing that anyone can do to change it. Within every man there is an innate difference between good and evil and Hawthorne's deliberate use of ambiguity mirrors this complexity of human nature. Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown, is misled by believing in the perfectibility of humanity and in the existence of moral absolutes. According to Nancy Bunge, Hawthorne naturally centers his story upon a Puritan protagonist to convey the "self-righteous" that he regards as the "antithesis of wisdom"(4). Consequently, Young Goodman Brown is unable to accept the indefinable vision of betrayal and evil that he encounters in the forest. The uncertainty of this vision, enhanced by Hawthorne's deliberate, yet effective, use of ambiguity, is also seen in the character of Faith, the shadows and darkness of the forest, and the undetectable boundaries that separate nightmarish dreams from reality.

Goodman ventures out on his expedition deep into the sinister forest, in order to repudiate the attempt of the devil to sway him from Christianity; a test he believes his devout faith is prepared to confront. Goodman Brown is forever altered in ways unforeseeable by taking a stroll with the ultimate antagonist, the devil himself. The prevailing theme in this literary work, which is common in Hawthorne’s gothic writing, is the realization that evil can infect people who seem perfectly respectable. Throughout the course of his journey, Goodman Brown discovers that even highly reputable people of Salem are vulnerable to the forces of darkness.
That is to say, that Goodman Brown is inexplicably attracted to evil, yet once he comes in contact with evil, he shies away, culminating to create an indecisive character, thus generating the idea of his “brown” disposition. Initially, Brown seems to be nothing more than a happy newlywed, until Hawthorne unexpectedly twists the story, and Brown leaves his new wife, Faith, with the intention of participating in an evil ritual. Any guilt Brown feels in beginning the journey is quelled by thoughts Faith’s virtue, which he believes will secure him a place in heaven, and having so calmed himself, he feels “justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose” (Hawthorne 1346). However, shortly upon venturing into a dark forest, Brown’s resolve soon begins to fade, and he even refuses to continue the journey at one point saying, “Not another step will I budge on this errand” (Hawthorne 1349). Young Goodman Brown: Symbolism and Double Meaning Young Goodman Brown is definitely a story with several meanings and images. As I was reading this story I was overwhelmed with the visual and technical images that Hawthorne projected. There was so much symbolism and double meanings in the story that I believe everyone in the class was confused at one point or another. Seemingly to the degree that they re-read the story a second time just to try and "fill" themselves with the actual vision of the reading. One question that always seems to plague classes about this story (both eng372 and other classes that I have attended in which YGB was read) is the actual meaning of Goodman Brown’s wife’s name: Faith.
Henry Seidel Canby in “A Skeptic Incompatible with His Time and His Past” states: “And indeed there is a lack of consistence between the scorn that our younger critics shower upon Hawthorne’s moral creations and their respect for his style. They admit a dignity in the expression that they will not allow to the thing expressed” (62). The style found in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” has not only a “dignity in the expression” as stated above, but also many other interesting aspects, discussed in the following essay.
