Psychology (Ph.D. Code: PSY)
Fields of study: Clinical, cognitive, and social psychology; neuroscience and behavior; visual perception. The program offers doctoral study for students who intend to become psychological scientists or scientist-practitioners. Students who plan to terminate their studies with the master's degree are not encouraged to apply. Admission is not limited to students with undergraduate backgrounds in psychology. Theory, method, and research experience in a number of areas of psychological science are emphasized. Course requirements are organized into the three broad areas of cognitive science, neuroscience, and clinical science. Students have intensive research training with individual faculty in the areas of clinical psychology, cognition, functional imaging, perception, psychobiology, sensory neurophysiology, and social psychology. Students in clinical psychology are also provided with extensive training in clinical skills. Major practicum facilities in which students receive supervised clinical and/or applied research training are found in the Vanderbilt Medical Center and other institutions in Nashville. The department is in a building which offers generous laboratory space for individual and group experiments with human subjects, and facilities for animal experimentation. It has a computerized classroom and connections to the campus mainframe computers. Computerized equipment for neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and psychophysics is also available and is especially suited for work on sensory systems. Human subjects are available through a University research pool, Vanderbilt clinics, and the local school system. In addition, the department has an animal facility providing a wide variety of species, including fish, rodents, and primates.

Fields of study: Clinical, cognitive studies, community, developmental, and quantitative psychology. The Clinical program focuses primarily on issues facing children and families. Faculty members study the development of aggressive behavior and depression in children and adolescents; psychological factors accompanying developmental disability and chronic physical disease; the role of communities in mental health; cognitive intervention for learning and behavioral problems; and the delivery of mental health services to children, youth, and families. The goal of the clinical program is to educate psychologists as scientists and practitioners so that they may pursue a variety of career paths. The Cognitive Studies program focuses on laboratory- and field-based research into cognitive processes as they occur in formal and informal learning situations. According to smith and Hamon (2012), Families are considered as a whole in society. However, they believed that couples have many components in which makes up the family, if one component is missing, the family as a whole can get unbalance (Smith & Hamon, 2012). In the Brice’s family, communication was the component that was missing. The couple was not able to communicate their differences, which was what caused Carolyn and David to verbally insult each other. Smith and Hamon (2012), also explain that a person who expresses his or her feeling is considered as someone who is breaking the functions of their family system; especially if the person is focusing on the individual who is causing the problem, rather than the problem itself. In the Brice family, Carolyn could be considered the one that cause the dysfunction in the family structure because she was focusing on David as the problem of their marriage, rather than focusing of the elements that are causing their problems. Gaius Julius Caesar, born 100 B.C.E. in Rome to the impoverished patrician Julian Clan, knew controversy at an early age. Nephew to Populare Gaius Marius, he was earmarked by the Optimate dictator Sulla for prosciption after his refusal to divorce his Populare wife, Cinna. Fleeing Rome, and not returning until after Sulla’s resignation in 78 B.C.E, upon his return he gained a position as a pontificate, an important Roman priesthood. Slowly but surely throughout his lifetime he worked his way up the political ladder, eventually becoming Consul, and finally Dictator Perpeteus – Dictator for life. One of the most influential political and military leaders of all time, Caesar was also a highly intelligent man and an exceptional orator. However, acquiring this absolute power was no mean feat, and Caesar had well equipped himself through previous expeditions with all the resources necessary to gain power in Ancient Rome.
Gaius Julius Caesar was born on July 12, 100 BC. He was born into a rich, aristocratic family in present day Rome, Italy. His parents were Aurelia Cotta and Gaius Julius Caesar whom Julius was named after. He was a descendant of Aeneas a great Trojan prince, through his mothers side. On his dads side he was related to Marius, who was a king. The author of the book Julius Caesar, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., said that, “Julius Caesar, from birth was groomed to take place in a senatorial oligarchy. As his mom taught him to appreciate and learn subjects like endurance, frugality, simplicity, religious devotion, upright dealing and the avoidance of wrong doing” (pg. 23). Not much information is given about Julius Caesar’s early life because he had lost the works he had written as a child. It is known that Caesar was educated by a man named Marcus Antonius Gnipho. In his late adolescence, he took up a political position during the Roman Civil Wars. He quickly learned to associate himself with the most powerful people of Rome; he would only marry Cornelia, “the daughter of the most powerful Roman of the era, the consul Lucius Cornelius Cinna”. Shortly after that, Lucius was killed by Sulla, the future “dictator” of Rome. Sulla demanded that Caesar divorce Cornelia; he refused, so Sulla stripped him of his priesthood of Jupiter and extracted his dowry from his marriage to Cornelia.
Gaius Caesar Germanicus was born on August 31, in the year 12 A.D. in Antium, Italy which is now present day Anzio. He earned the nickname Caligula which means little boot or little sandal. He earned this name somewhere between the age of two and four. When wearing miniature versions of military sandals or caligae the soldiers took notice, hence the nickname. This name stuck with him for the rest of his life. Growing up was easy for him due to being hailed from Rome’s most enduring family, Julio Claudiens. Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus was born on 31 August AD 12 to Agrippina and Germanicus Julius Caesar. He had two brothers, Nero and Drusus and three sisters, Julia Livia, Agrippina the Younger and Drusilla. Suetonius wrote of a condition Gaius suffered from in great detail. Suetonius stated that Gaius “as a boy he was troubled with the falling sickness” , which we now presume was epilepsy. At the age of two Gaius marched with his father, Germanicus, into several bloody campaigns in the territory of Germania. During the campaigns he wore child sized armor and boots, which led soldiers to call him Caligula meaning “little boots.” His father enjoyed a great deal of success in military campaigns in the north, making him and his family famous and loved by the people. As Germanicus gained popularity, Tiberius (the emperor at the time) conspired against him in order to weaken his influence, and poisoned him. Germanicus died soon after in Antioch in the year 19 CE.
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus Augustus was born on July 12th or 13th, 100BC into the prestigious Julius clan. He and his family were closely related to the Marion faction in Roman politics. Caesar started to progress within the Roman political system. He became a succession quaestor in 69 BC, aedile in 65 BC, and praetor in 62 BC.61-60 BC he served as governor of the Roman Province of Spain. Later in Rome in 60 BC, Caesar made a pact with Pompey and Crassus, which helped him to get elected s consul for 59 BC. Shortly following in the next year, he was appointed governor of Roman Gaul, where he stayed for eight years. During those eight successful years, he added the whole modern France and Belgium to the Roman Empire. By doing this, it protected Rome from the possibility of Gallic invasions. Julius Caesar was born on the 13th day of the month Quintilis (now July) in the year of 100 B.C. His full name was Gaius Julius Caesar, the same as his father's name. Gaius was his given name and Julius was his surname. Caesar was the name of one branch of the Julian family. Its original meaning was "hairy.” Caesar's family was not prominent, but they claimed to be descended from Venus as well as the kings of Alba Langa. In spite of that fiction, Caesar was well connected through his relatives and received some important government assignments during his youth. Julius Caesar was the dictator of Rome from 61-44 BC. At the time of his birth, Rome was still a republic and the empire was only beginning. Caesar made his way to be considered a head of Rome by 62 BC, but many of the senate felt him a dangerous, ambitious man. The senate did their best to keep him out of consulship. He finally became consul in 59 BC. In Caesar, they saw only the threat of a king, a word that was linked with the word “tyrant” that is cruel or unjust rule.
Sometimes our appreciation and trust in God becomes conditioned on how well things are going for us. When a Christian suffers, they assume that there must be sin in their life. But suffering is not always a result of sin as we see with Job. In most cases, those who are sinners suffer a little while those who are good suffer much. Many people see this as a stumbling block for Christian and ask why God allows suffering. Instead of us asking ourselves “why me” we might be better off asking “why not me.” God often uses suffering to produce righteous character in believers. Sometimes He wants those who suffer to be more dependent upon Him. It may be that He is trying to get our attention. We might even be sinning; however, we cannot always equate suffering with sin in those who love the Lord as we see with Job’s
Cognition is the process involved in thinking and mental activity, such as attention, memory and problem solving. In this essay on cognitive development I will compare and contrast the theories of Piaget and Vygotsky, who were both influential in forming a more scientific approach to analyzing the cognitive development process of the child active construction of knowledge. (Flanagan 1996 P.72). I will then evaluate the usefulness of these theories in understanding a child's development.
Ads (or advertisements) are everywhere. These messages come from different platforms, and they are aimed at convincing people to purchase goods, services, and ideas. From its simple beginnings in ancient Greece and Rome, advertising is now multimillion-dollar industry. Companies make huge investments, utilize sophisticated technologies, and make use of very persuasive language to market existing products (Green, 2012). The automobile industry made excellent use of advertisements. According to Georgano (2013) “the advertising industry and the automobile grew up side by side and each was a major stimulus to the other” (para 1).

I never noticed how much psychology could be incorporated into everyday life. But really, any decision or action you take is related to it. I have personally been extremely interested in social psychology: why people do things because of social norms, what people do in order to look socially acceptable, etc. Others topics I also find interesting are sensation and perception; how past experiences can influence how you perceive the things around you, states of consciousness; how things that have happened in your day can be transferred into a mash of events in your dreams, motivation and emotion; what makes a person do something or what makes a person start or stop procrastination, and lastly: personality; what characteristics and traits stand out the most in a person, what makes a person who they are.
Sociology and psychology is the study of the mind and the environment around us which makes us who we are. These theories assist us to understand behaviour from individual and societal levels.
