Fibromyaligia and Physical Therapy Fibromylagia is a chronic disorder that causes wide-spread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and tenderness in localized area. So far the disorder can't be cured, but can be managed through treatment. The client will need to be diagnosed by a medical doctor and unhappily may live with fibromayaigia for years if not for the rest of their life. However, clients should remember that they aren't alone, today over 5.6 million Americans suffer from this disorder No one is quit sure what causes this disorder but it seems that the pain-receptors in the brain go into a kind of hyper-drive that allows them to over-respond to minor pain sensations. It has been found that the disease often follows some sort of trauma such as an accident or surgery. In other cases it seems to follow a period of severe emotional stress. However, most of the reasons are still theoretical, no real proof as to the cause has been scientifically found. …show more content…
A key characteristic of fibromayaligia is pain.
The symptom seems to very in each individual, in some people it appears localized while others state that the pain is wide-spread through the body. Others find the pain occurs in clusters. There are two main types of pain that occur with this disorder. The first is known as hyperesthesia, which can be defined as a sensitivity to touch. Imagine going to bed with only a light covering yet feeling that a heavy weight covers your body. This is an example of hyperesthesia. The second type of pain is called hyperalgesia. This type of pain occurs when the body over-responds to feelings of pain. For example a person experiencing hyperalgesia may bump their head on a low-hanging tree branch. Most of us would feel an achy uncomfortable sensations that goes away quickly. For a person with this pain response the pain can be excruciating and last for days or even
months. There are different types of treatments for the disorder including medications. However, for many physical therapy is a good choice for both strengthening and pain management. Stretches and strengthening exercises help in everyday activities as well improving movement. Therapists at Innovative Physical Therapy will help create an individualized plan that can help reduce pain symptoms as well as help clients with everyday activities of living. Its possible that these types of treatment may help with the fatigue so often felt with fibromalagia. These plans can be modified as needed in response to either pain or fatigue. Other treatments offered at Innovative Physical Therapy includes deep tissue massage, heat and cold packs for the relief of pain. The therapists can also offer electronic stimulation sessions that are often effective in relaxing muscles as well as reducing pain. You will find not just pain relief but support from our therapists. Passive range of motion can be used to help restore mobility and improve joint strength. As you can see Physical Therapy can be an important part of your treatment when dealing with this little understood and debilitating disorder. Our therapists are here to help you find the best way to reduce pain and keep you mobile and able to function on a daily basis. What has your experience with fibrillation been like? What symptoms have you experienced? Just leave your answers in our comment section. You can also let us know what other disorders you liked to see discussed here. We read all comments and will respond to them in a timely manner.
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva also known as FOP is a one of the rarest, most disabling genetic bone conditions known to medicine. FOP causes muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues to turn in to bone. Movement becomes limited in the affected areas of the body. People with FOP typically have malformed toes at birth, meaning the big toe is typically shorter than normal and abnormally turned outward in a position called a valgus deviation. Symptoms of FOP start to show up in early childhood. Most people with FOP develop painful tumor-like swellings also known as fibrous nodules. The fibrous nodules are visible on the neck, shoulders, and back.
“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease” by Thomas A. Edison. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments on the spine which will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Chiropractic care began in 1895 when its founder, Daniel David Palmer, claimed any and all diseases could be healed by nothing more than just his hands. Dr. Palmer examined a janitor who was deaf for 17 years after the janitor felt his back was out of place, so Dr. Palmer gave an adjustment to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor then observed that his hearing improved thanks to Dr. Palmer. Chiropractors use manipulation to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by sitting without proper back support. Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually
Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a musculoskeletal illness (which causes chronic pain) and a chronic fatigue disorder. It can also change sleep patterns and cause the following: digestive disorders, chronic headaches, painful menstrual periods, temperature sensitivity, morning stiffness, numbness or tingling of extremities, and even cognitive memory problems. The name fibromyalgia comes from "fibro" in Latin meaning tissue, "my" in Greek meaning muscle, and "algia" (also Greek) meaning pain.(source 5)
"Chronic pain persists despite the fact that the fact the injury has healed. Pain signals remain active in the nervous system for the prolonged or infinite amount of time. Physical effects include tense muscles, limited mobility, lack of energy, and changes in the appetite. Emotional effects include depression, anger, anxiety, and fear of re-injury"(Cleveland Clinic 2013). Chronic pain can develop from multiple common conditions. These can include; instance migraines, diabetes, IBS, fibroids, and endometri...
Imagine waking up every morning stiff, all your muscles in your body soar, extremely tired and on the verge of exhaustion. The simple task of taking a shower and getting dressed makes you need to lay down for just a few minutes and rest. Your legs ache from a short walk up the stairs last night on your way to bed, as if you ran a marathon in your sleep, and your skin literally hurts to the touch of your clothes as they rub against you. Your blood pressure is up and you can feel the pain emanating from every part of your body. You can’t, for the life of you, find your keys as they hang from the keychain in your hand, because the pain and agitation you are feeling all over has clouded your mind. You are finding it difficult to even concentrate. Never mind the rest of the day ahead of you, that has not even started yet. Now imagine this every day, all day. It almost seems impossible to fathom something of this nature on a daily basis, but that is exactly what most people with fibromyalgia describe as a daily feeling. Some are much worse than that. Fibromyalgia is real, it is pain, and it does exist. Although fibromyalgia awareness has progressed thru advertising there is much more that can, and needs to be done to bring this to the forefront of the medical field and other organizations as a real diagnosis. More research and Government funding is direly needed and demands significant action from our National health agencies and United States Government in the form of grants, research, trials and various drug interaction and testing.
Anyone can suffer from torticollis following a muscle injury or nervous system. However, in most cases, the cause of torticollis is unknown. In this case, it is called idiopathic torticollis.
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a nerve disorder that causes long-lasting (chronic) pain, usually in a hand, arm, leg, or foot. CRPS usually follows an injury or trauma, such as a fracture or sprain.
There is no fixed reason why people get them, it is a mixture of environment and genetics, evidence suggest that they are linked to childhood sexual abuse, neglect and physical violence (Warner & Wilkins,
After meeting with our patient twice, I believe we have set into place a relationship where the patient is very open to us about her health. This is helpful for my partner and I as an open and honest patient is beneficial as we assist them in their health. Goals for next semester include reducing our patient’s blood sugar as well as reducing our patient’s fibromyalgia pain. Our patient has expressed to us that her glucose is high but she is ok with the high number as long as she is feeling relatively healthy. We hope to give practical ways to reduce blood sugar throughout next semester so hopefully we can reduce that number by semester’s end. Our patient is going to see her physician soon, so we hope to get an update on the patient’s fibromyalgia
There are five moveable lumbar vertebrae which are connected by paired facet joints located between the articular processes of the pedicles and by the anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments. Intervertebral foramina are formed by notches in the articular processes of adjacent pedicles of two vertebrae; the disk is anterior and medial to the foramen. Nerve roots of L1-L5 descend from the conus medullaris (termination of the adult spinal cord, typically located between T10 and L1 vertebral levels) and exit at the neural foramina of their respective level.
Neuropathic pain is a frequent complication of pathological conditions such as AIDS, stroke, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and shingles (Campbell & Meyer, 2006). Neuropathic pain can arise spontaneously or by mild stimuli that are common to everyday experience like gentle touch, warm and cool temperatures, and pressure of clothing (Campbell & Meyer, 2006). Patients often describe their experience as lancinating or continuous burning pain. Much present research is being devoted to better understand the mechanisms of neuropathic pain due to its debilitating effect. Both central and peripheral pain related factors have been associated with neuropathic pain, and it is possible that any one of these factors, or a combination, contribute to the symptomatology of patients experiencing neuropathic pain (Campbell & Meyer, 2006). Peripheral effects include ectopic and spontaneous discharge, alterations in ion channel expression, collateral sprouting of primary afferent neurons, sprouting of sympathetic neurons into the dorsal root ganglion, and nociceptor sensitization (Campbell & Meyer, 2006). Central effects include central sensitization, spinal reorganization, cortical reorganization, and changes in inhibitory pathways (Campbell & Meyer, 2006). In addition, the mechanism of nociceptor sensitization in neuropathic pain can be divided into the
The face and under the eyes becomes swollen, and these areas can become painful to the touch because the inflamed tissue is pushing on nerves in the face. To make matters worse, all of the symptoms are accompanied by sometimes debilitating
I have chosen to talk about alternative medicine and other natural methods that should be attempted before pharmaceutical measures. Many Americans have back pain problems from ranging degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, or bulged disc. It causes people to miss out on work which can lead them to be terminated from a job, special events, and other occupations. Lower back pain can be caused numerous of things like heavy object or twisting the spine while lifting objects, poor posture over time, or a sports injuries, especially in sports that involve twisting or large forces or impact.
Unlike physical pain, mental pain is less obvious to the onlooker, but to the afflicted, it is often more difficult to bear. My parents and I have experienced the struggles of living with someone with a wounded spirit. My younger brother has struggled with self esteem, anxiety, and anger issues for as long as I can remember. In our society, mental pain is often seen with a negative connotation. Because there is no blood test or x-ray to diagnose it, many people do not see a true issue when a person struggles with mental pain, making it very difficult for a person to seek help for it. My hope is that one day psychological illnesses will be treated the same as cancer.
