Life as we know it today would not be where it is if people did not stumble upon fermentation. Ancient civilians did not have the knowledge that current people today have however, at points in history people came across a few different foods and beverages to fermentate. Discovery of fermentation lead groups of people to settle in one area and start to build a steady civilization The general process of fermentation is almost the same for each item. Beer, bread, and cheese are just a few examples of products recorded. Storage of these products are different because, they can either be a solid or a liquid. After beer, bread, and cheese were fermented, steady civilizations erupted and the economy increased. Without fermentation civilizations would …show more content…
This would cause the survival of the fittest. People who were either weak and/or sick were not be able to get as much food, unlike people who were strong and able to work. Civilians that were able to work were given better quality and more food than others because, strong folks could support the community while the others were indirectly hurting it. To survive the cold weather and season people would store the food and drinks in certain containers so it would last much longer than normal. This became highly important to the growth and development of civilizations. With growth and development comes the growth of economic profits. Economic stand point in the time before fermentation was good but, after fermentation of beer, bread, and cheese and the storage of these items, the economy had improved greatly. This was due to the buying and selling of the products. People had to buy various items to get the necessary ingredients to make the cheese or the other foods and drinks. After people made either the food or beer they were then able to keep the products for their families and sell the rest to make a profit. As a result, companies then started to pop up in areas and the economy increased even
Table 6 shows the results of the biochemical tests. The isolate can obtain its energy by means of aerobic respiration but not fermentation. In the Oxidation-Fermentation test, a yellow color change was produced only under both aerobic conditions, indicating that the EI can oxidize glucose to produce acidic products. In addition to glucose, the EI can also utilize lactose and sucrose, and this deduction is based on the fact that the color of the test medium broth changed to yellow in all three Phenol Red Broth tests. These results are further supported by the results of the Triple Sugar Iron Agar test. Although the EI does perform fermentation of these three carbohydrates, it appears that this bacterium cannot perform mixed acid fermentation nor 2,3-butanediol fermentation due to the lack of color change in Methyl Red and Vogues-Proskauer
They could die without food maybe if they didn't have water though but without food it could be really hard to live with other people because what if you would have started to go crazy and almost hurt someone.
Many new industries were developed to support mass production of goods, such as, roads, tires, and all the items it took to build a vehicle for the automobiles.(David Shannon, 217) The chemical industry grew in the United States after First World War because America couldn't get the chemical anymore they had gotten from Germany. (Shannon, 219) Americans wanted the access to electric power which included: lights, radios, and washing machines. There was a mass movement of people from the country to the city looking for jobs. The rural life couldn't support a family like urban living could, people left the farming industry and moved to the manufacturing industries which damage the ability for agricultural to survive.(Shannon, 219) The effects of prosperity revolved around the automobile specifically younger people's ability to escape adult supervision.
When we learn about the history of the world we usually divide it up into eras, dynasties, major wars, revolutions, etc. But what we all learn is that even the smallest thing can have a massive impact on history. In this book, Tom Standage chose to look at the way six different beverages altered history. I never knew how important different beverages were throughout history, but Standage was able to prove that beverages were responsible for global revolutions, intellectual and political insights, and good motivators for work.
Many of the French people were left without homes, food or livestock, they were about to face a harsh winter and were unsure if they had enough seeds to plant crops the following year. The climatic changes that occurred over Europe had drastic consequences for agriculture, resulting in malnutrition which pre-disposed the populace to disease. Inflation increased and famine soon spread across Europe, resulting in many deaths. Around 1339, Europe’s population began to increase, this growth began to surpass the capacity of the land to feed its populace. Therefore, a severe economic crisis began to emerge....
During the harder times periods, people did not eat any food for days. Malnutrition lead many people to bleeding gums, shaking teeth, loss of body mass, weakening of muscles and other tissues, and other more severe health problems. In order to survive themselves and to keep some of their children alive, sometimes parents made a decision to kill their weakest child for food. Cannibalism was also seen in other ways. When people saw a dead, or a fallen person on the street, they tore out his body parts and used them to prepare a meal. Not to mention that food deficiency led people to eating non-eatable objects. Before the hard times began, many people used to make salt-pickled cabbage in the wooden containers. When no more cabbage was left in the barrels, people chopped them apart and cooked with them. This is because barrels had absorbed some salt into them. They were used to add some flavor to the food, and in the harder times, people consumed the left over pieces from the barrels. It wasn’t the only wooden product that they consumed. In the severe famine periods, people crushed wood into smaller pieces and consumed it in order to experience some feeling of satiety. Likewise, people crushed boots and belts into tiny pieces and digested it. In the period of hunger, people were ready for anything giving them some hope of
The 'fermentation' word comes from the Latin verb ‘fervere’ means ‘to boil’ (4). “Fermentation is a process in which an agent causes an organic substance to break down into simpler substances; especially, the anaerobic breakdown sugar into alcohol
5. Beer assisted with the growth of many civilizations, evolving many small groups. These small groups were turned into large cities and focusing on inventions. Beer made it obvious that agriculture was needed for mankind to thrive and revolve around.
== For thousands of years, the process of fermentation has been used to make bread, beer and wine. Today fermentation is used to make foods such as bread and yogurt, alcoholic drinks such as wine, drugs such as penicillin and chemicals such as methanol and citric acid. Fermentation is a chemical process. Tiny organisms called microbes grow by converting the sugars in food, such as fruits and grain, into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Microbes can live almost anywhere.
Fermentation Lab CEJ The scientists conducted an experiment to investigate an alternative sugar source that could produce the most CO2. They were hired by a baker, Jim Baker, to help him create a new type of bread that is both fluffy and unique using a different type of sugar rather than the traditional sugar. Making bread includes a process called alcoholic fermentation, which is a process that converts glucose, a sugar, into ethanol and CO2 (equation: C6H12O6 → 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2 ). Alcoholic fermentation is one of the two ways the cell can produce ATP without oxygen in anaerobic cellular respiration.
The most important alcoholic fermentation in industry is wine. It is produced by fermentation of fruit juice. Beer or ale is also one of the important alcoholic fermentation that is produced by fermentation of malted grains and distilled beverage, produced by concentrating alcohol from fermentation by distillation.
Since farmers could no longer make crops that means stores ran out of product. Since stores ran out of product the store owners probably left there store to seek refugee in a better state where they could maek money. Since they left there store it probably got looted. Since the store got looted the store is now empty and foodless. Meaning other people that stop by for food were=nt able to get it because it previously got looted. And due to the great depreession it just made things even worse. So during this time hunger was probably a serious problem.

Yeast can be used in our daily life to make food such as alcoholic drinks and bread. Yeast takes a big part of the bread while it’s made because it is the main source that makes the bread/dough rise. During this process, yeast consumes the sugar and excrete carbon dioxide and alcohol. Not just yeast has an ability to leaven the dough, but also the fermentation helps to strengthen the gluten and contributes to the flavors of the bread. Even though the two different life processes (eg. Reproduction and excretion) are carried out, the results are all connected. Yeast can not directly, in most cases, benefit humans; however, humans can use yeast to benefit their lives. Reproduction, nutrition, and excretion have a big connection between them. A dough containing sugar is a nutrition for the yeasts and it excretes the carbon dioxide after consumption. When the ingredients are mixed fermentation occurs in which the yeast cells break down the large starch molecules into sugars for nutrition. It is required for survival and reproduction, and then, yeast excretes carbon dioxide and ethyl alcohol into the oxygen bubbles in the dough. However, if too much of the yeasts are added, it will produce more gluten and the dough may collapse while baking. Another famously known example is alcoholic drinks. Yeast is the most important ingredient in wine and beer making. It seems to do the same thing in bread making. For winemaking, according to the history, it uses grapes. The sugar from the grapes is consumed by the yeasts and converts them into ethanol(alcohol) and carbon dioxide through the process of fermentation. Same with bread, the budding will increase the number of yeasts and therefore, they will produce more alcohol and carbon dioxide. However, there are a certain amount that has to be put in, in order to produce the perfect result. Not only if it can help us through the food, but yeast can work as a
As we know that microorganisms are really help in making yogurt, wine, bread and so on. So, we can said that microorganism is also one of the most important thing that we should know to carry out our life. The function of microorganisms in yogurt, is for taste and texture of final product. From this, we can know a lot of benefit microorganisms our life. It shows that microorganisms is half from our life. Without microorganisms, perhaps humans already do not exist in this world. This is one of the ways to imagine how important microorganisms to human. Microorganisms do not only important in food product but also important in everything that human needs. In fermentation of yogurt, microorganisms acts of souring the yogurt. For yeast, lactic acid is produce by microorganisms for flavour and colour of the meat. In fermentation of wine, the microorganisms also produce lactic acid. Lactic acid n fermentation of wine with change the unstable malic acid in the wine to the stable lactic acid. In health food industry, lactic are used as a supplement to human. It can be in capsule and tablets. Microorganisms is only a tiny living things that live among the human. But, like we can see that the impact of this creature are really big especially in making the human to carry out their life. Every activity that we want to do will be connected with
