In Red Dog Red Dog, Patrick Lanes portrays through the use of feminism that women needed respect and were mistreated which was shown throughout the characters in the novel. Throughout the history of women they have struggled and tried to gain equality and rights. The history and the want of women’s rights left society to be certain of that a woman’s only purpose in life is her sexual being. In the novel men are shown disrespecting women but women were as well holding the same attitude and lack of empowerment for themselves. It is because of the want of knowledge which causes both men and women in the Okanagan where the novel takes place to be unaware of a woman’s self-respect. Not only did men disrespect women but women in general disrespect themselves and other women around them in this era. However, by comparing characters of the novel to the modern women it is noticeable that women now are considered equal and are respected. There are a lot of female characters in the novel that show tendencies towards insecurity. Women are disrespected by men in this novel, women feel disempowered, and women disrespect those around them.
Lillian, a character in the novel, is the mother of Eddy and Tom. She stays away from her husband Elmer Stark because she is scared he will kill her and due to that she sleeps alone. Also she is always in her room and only comes out when Elmer is not home. Elmer would beat her and cause her to be injured. Lane writes, “She blamed father for all her loses. Her room was locked each night and Father, drunk as he might have been, never dared to enter it. He might splutter his rage at the door but he never tried to break it down” (Lane 40). There are a lot of female characters in the novel that show qualities of being poor and insecure. Women should be given the same respect they give men and they should not be abused or mistreated. Everyone in the world today should stand up for the women and protect them so they are not abused. This is a crime and should be stopped to let the women live comfortable lives.
