No matter how hard we try to deny it, favoritism is a disease we’re all born with. Ever since we were little, we were persuaded into thinking it was better to favor certain things over others; colors, music, or the most famous one of all; the love from Mommy vs Daddy. These factors later on have a great impact on the way we as children develop. We try so hard to make our subconscious believe that we love everyone equally, when deep inside we know it’s not true. However, when you're a parent it is important to emphasize that your love for each child is equal. When a parent makes it obvious to a child that they have a favorite, it can start to reflect on the child's behavior. “Only with words and people and love you move at ease;” (Nims, 572) Laura Tavares was born in 1995. Since the day she was brought into this world she was verbally abused by her mother. Being the first child, one would have thought, “she would be the most loved”. By the age of seven, there was a new baby in the house, Samuel. He was born premature, and aside from the verbal abuse, Laura started to get neglected. By age 10, she was obese and dressed like a middle aged woman. Her mother made sure that Laura knew her place as the slave in the family, waiting on Sammy hand and foot. Evidently Laura knew she was not the favorite, and she made it her goal to change that. She became a straight A student, and was know as the best dancer at our school. She lost weight, and got a job where she made over $1000 a week. Ultimately, the dispute over what is considered everyday use is what brings about Alice Walker’s title. In the case of Alice Walker, her title is derived from the idea of the conflict and message of the story. Alice Walker challenges her readers to see the negative outcome of being a materialistic person. She shows how this often harms people’s families, and also hurts livelihoods in convincing people to use things in a good or insecure manner. Alice Walker identifies much in “Everyday Use,” and these things are displayed through title which she selected. It draws people to the story, in craving what the story is about, and it also gives enough information to make the story interesting. Titles reflect a story and show how important it is for people to discuss the messages, certain lines, and conflicts in a story, and Alice Walker’s story really shows all three of these things. A Child Called "It", by Dave Pelzer, is a first person narrative of a child’s struggle through a traumatic abused childhood. The book begins with Dave telling us about his last day at his Mother’s house before he was taken away by law enforcement. At first I could not understand why he had started at the end of his tale, but after reading the entire book it was clear to me that it was easier to read it knowing there indeed was a light at the end of the dark tunnel. This horrific account of extreme abuse leaves us with a great number of questions which unfortunately we do not have answers for. It tells us what happened to this little boy and that miraculously he was able to survive and live to see the day he left this hole which was his home, however, it does not tell us why or even give us a good amount of background with which to speculate the why to this abuse.

A mother’s response to her child will yield either a secure bond or insecurity with the infant. Parents who respond “more sensitively and responsively to the child’s distress” establish a secure bond faster than “parents of insecure children”. (Attachment and Emotion, page 475) The quality of the attachment has “profound implications for the child’s feelings of security and capacity to form trusting relationships” (Book). I believe that parents play a vital role in influencing children during the development process as they create a lasting impact on the child’s overall development as well as on the socialization development. As children grow, they encompass a number of factors influencing their attitudes along with the behavior of that child. These attitudes and characteristics are learned initially from their parents. I also believe that when we are in middle school is when we want to be different to fit in with our peers. We see our peers and believe that the things they are doing are cool; we also want them to like us so we start to do the same things as them, which shows then that friends start to influence us more than adults.
