Moreover, previous studies have reported that more frequent fast-food consumption is associated with higher energy and fat intake and lower intake of healthful nutrients (1,2). ... Nestle’s quote, Bittman makes his editorial plea to ethos, by proposing proof that a woman of reliable mental power of this issue come to an agreement with Bittman's thesis statement. Bittman also develops pathos in this article because he grabs a widely held matter that to many individuals is elaborate with: "...giving them the gift of appreciating the pleasures of nourishing one another and enjoying that nourishment together.” (Mark Bittman) Bittman gives the reader the actions to think about the last time they had a family dinner and further imposes how these family dinners are altogether important for family time. Therefore, Bittman did a magnificent job in pointing into the morals of his targeted audience and developing a critical point of view about fast food to his intended audience leaving them with a thought on less fast food and more home prepared meals.
Fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society. Everywhere you turn you can see a fast food restaurant. An industry that modestly began with very few hot dog and hamburger vendors now has become a multi-international industry selling its products to paying customers. Fast food can be found anywhere imaginable. Fast food is now served at restaurants and drive-through, at stadiums, airports, schools all over the nation. Surprisingly fast food can even be found at hospital cafeterias. In the past, people in the United States used to eat healthier and prepared food with their families. Today, many young people prefer to eat fast food such as high fat hamburgers, French-fries, fried chicken, or pizza in fast
However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension”
For millions, fast food restaurants are the source of positive associations with birthday parties, play dates and accessible comfort food. For others, they represent a lifeline meal on a busy day, or the secret to quieting a cranky toddler on a long trip because hurrying residents of cities have no time to cook a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fast food presents even in the lives of people who are trying
By sharing meals with your loved ones, whether for a simple catch-up over dinner or partaking in a celebration, it is believed to provide a healthier lifestyle [3]. In addition, food allows people to stay connected with each other. This increases the nutritional health within children and adolescents on the frequency of having family meals together
Food as a family affair is largely determined by the family’s lifestyle; conversely, knowing a family’s eating patterns says a lot about their lifestyle. Sitcoms portray meals as a leisurely occasion for the family to sit down together to enjoy savory foods fresh from the oven, which the loving wife has been tending for the past two hours. Then reality sinks in. The increasing popularity of TV dinners, microwave gourmet, and prepackaged snacks caters to a family without the time for such luxury. Why cook when you can heat up a frozen entrée of teriyaki beef or homestyle apple pie in just four minutes? As the tendency for both spouses to be employed full-time has increased from 33% of families in 1972 to 67% in 1998, according to the National Data...
One way that fast food effects obesity is by advertising their products to children (Miller). In her article Food Advertising Contributes to Obesity, Patti Miller explains that the fast food companies are targeting kids and teenagers by advertising on television. The fast food advertisements are promoting unhealthy products as acceptable food which influences children to choose those meals. The American Psychological Association, an organization focused on improving the lives of individuals, expressed that with the exposure of different fast food commercials, children request to purchase these unhealthy products and cause the parents to be influenced by these requests. This concludes the idea that once children are encouraged by the commercials, they opt to consume the fast food advertised on television. Today, fast food companies are even advertising through schools by offering pizzas and burgers as school lunches, which consequently becomes a daily meal for children and teenagers to consume (Wadden, Brownell,
Obesity is a big social issue in America. Due to the popularity of fast food and other unhealthy foods, more and more Americans are developing health diseases and disorders. We should be getting the correct daily nutrition amount, but because of our fast paced lifestyles we sometimes do not have enough time. Fast food restaurants make it possible to grab a meal and go. We often do not pay attention to the nutrition amount, but are simply looking for a quick bite to eat that will fulfill our hunger. Fast food is assisting in the increase of obesity in America (“Phrase” par.2).
Mealtime seems to be one of the most affected to society eyes. As much access that people has to technology, it became very popular to have any sort of technology device during mealtime. “64 % of all 8-to 18 years old, live in homes where the TV is usually on during meals”(Villegas 7 ).Such a pattern affects the quality time that a family should spend during mealtime and it makes it difficult for the family to have engaging conversations. In the article “The Influence of Technology on Family Dynamics ” The author points out the importance of eating together and emphasizes on the multiple benefits that sharing a meal as a family has for children. “Eating together at mealtime provides opportunities for the family to communicate with one another. It also has critical benefits for a child’s development including: physical, social, emotional, academic, behavioral and for overall development of family connections.” (Villegas, 7 ).Strong family relationships are formed when the members share stories, ideas, thoughts and feelings and also establish traditions. Mealtime provides the perfect space to develop engagement, and interest among family members to perform all those enriching activities. Moreover one the major advantages of family meals is the benefit of reinforce family bonds.(Villegas 7). Meal time provides a space during the day for the family to get together. This at the same time establish family routines which is very important for a child because it makes feel him secure and it provides him the feeling that he has a family to count on. Eating together without any distraction allows the members of the family to be participants of what really is important at mealtime. Mealtime provides a valuable moment to share, to strengthen. It is a healthy habit that would leave an outstanding impact in every member of the
America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
Americas Food industries have made a mockery of our health. Whether it be what we think is 100% all natural food to what can be called the most over processed food in the world, whatever we consume in our society today has no benefit to us, at all! Imagine a world where everything we eat only brings us closer and closer to death, faster than the speed of light, yet we have no realization that it is happening. This is the world and the producers of our food have no care towards whether we live or die, healthy or unhealthy once money for their end is being made. Nonetheless, we cannot change the way processed food manufactures view our health but they can change the way our food is made.
Through Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation he examines the effects that fast food has impacted the world and the way it is affecting the people that are consuming it. As the fast food industry continues to grow throughout not only the United States but the whole world, marketing companies are always looking for ways to broaden the group of people that are interested in buying their product over another company’s. As a marketer for a fast food company it is essential to have a group of people that you can rely on to always buy the company’s product, to many fast food companies they found this group of people to be adolescents and children. Marketing groups specifically market their products to entice this group of people to lure them in. Food is an object that is needed for the survival of a human, but the type of food that humans chose to eat is also not always the best. Because fast food is so cheap and easily accessible just about everywhere you turn your head, many people resort to eating it even though it is very unhealthy. With these factors present, many adults have exposed their children to fast food at a young age, these parents do not always think about the long term effects of feeding their children fast food because they are so caught up in the moment of feeding their kids right then and there; they do not think about the health risks that can occur later as a result from eating fast food now.
Making home prepared foods help people to acknowledge what and how much of each substance is going into their bodies. The preparation of food helps people to alter their diet to become more healthful (“The Importance of Family Dinners,” 2012). Although it might be hard the physiological and social health of the entire family will benefit if everyone participates in some form of the process whether that be setting the table or helping cook (“The Importance of Family Dinners,” 2012). Increasing the time at the dinner table will also help place a positive impact on uncounted aspects of a child’s life by allowing them to form values, morals, increase self-esteem from the conversations formed (“The Importance of Family Dinners,” 2012). Time at the dinner table also allows for the entire family to develop better communication skills from listening and sharing news all without the distractions of a busy environment (“The Importance of Family Dinners,” 2012).
“We need to teach our children to eat real food. No fast foods. No junk foods. No processed foods. Just honest, nutritious, real food.” As the years go by many more people are becoming obese because they consume too much fast food. People need to get in habits to cook at home rather than eating out everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. People in this world are now always trying to look for the easy way out of things. Eating out at a fast food restaurant is not a healthy meal to eat. We the people need to avoid the fast food restaurants and stop being lazy and have home cooked meals everyday. Although fast food is convenient for everyone, it causes obesity and consuming too much fast food can lead to type 2 diabetes.
The main cause of eating fast food is that we are running a fast pace life and we seem to find no time in the day to sit down and prepare a healthy food for ourselves. Therefore, fast food restaurants are continuing to grow their business and we are continuing to put our health at risk as consumers. Thus, in my opinion consuming fast food is not a wise choice for any of us and we should stay away from eating it because it has many drawbacks than the benefits. The changes in lifestyle worldwide from past few decades have shown a great impact on the pattern of food consumption. One of the most common trends in consumption of fast food is eating food outside the home. Family work pattern has also changed and as have family structure,
