The biggest life decisions can be made by the symbols we see in everyday life. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, Montag is a fireman in a future dystopia. In this dystopia, the firemen burn books so then the people cannot read them. Montag still decides to read books anyway. He is trying to figure out things about society and why things are the way they are. His neighbor, Clarisse, is a young girl who is filled with curiosity, but is an outcast to the society. Mildred, Montag’s wife, is an example of a conformed citizen. Beatty, the fire captain, is extremely dangerous. He just wants to slow Montag down. Montag eventually meets Faber who teaches him how to be an individual. Granger is another mentor who helps Montag with his questioning self. Montag has to make major life decisions throughout the book and symbols used in the novel contributes to our understanding of his decisions. Hands, water, and fire are three primary symbols that enhance the plot, characters, and theme. One way Bradbury uses primary symbols to enhance the novel is by intensifying Montag's actions with his hand. Montag’s hand represents his conscience and what he truly wants to do. In this scene, Montag is burning books and slips one into his jacket when the other firemen are not looking. He is afraid because he, “... had done nothing. His hand has done it all, his hand, with a brain of its own...” (37). Montag’s hand represents his conscience. He did not conform to the society. His conscience wants to be individual. In another scene, Montag is upset when Mildred dies because he does not fully remember her. Granger comforts him by saying, “Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child ... ... middle of paper ... ... Granger’s group wants to create. Montag is fire. He can either destroy or create, but he chose to create. Hands, water, and fire are three main symbols that influence Montag’s decisions. We also use main symbols to influence our lives today. Our hands create who we will be seen as from others. Our images are molded into what we create. Clarity and truthfulness is brought to our lives with water. We baptise people with water to show that their life is pure. We bathe them in the truth and clarity. We clean things with water to impose the truth on the object or others. As long as we are dirty, we are hiding the truth. People can find creativity and destruction all in one place, fire. We burn, we destroy, we forge, and we construct. It is the will of humanity to destroy or create. It is our own choices that decide what we will do with all of that power.
