Fantasy Football Fantasy football started at the Milford Plaza Hotel in New York City. A man named Wilfred “Bill” Winkenbach invented fantasy football. He was an Oakland area businessman and a partner with the Oakland Raiders. He met with three friends who were all a part of the Raiders organization. They met in Winkenbach’s hotel room and cracked some brews then Bill started talking about a game he thought of that involved the PGA tour and Major League Baseball. The league focused on AFL skill players and it was called the GOPPPL (Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Procrastinators League). People have fun in their leagues in many ways. One way is the names of their teams. Some examples of team names are Cry Me A Rivers, Waka Flacco Flame, Boy Named Suh, and Forgetting Brandon Marshall. Also, people have fun with winning and losing. People give out trophies or other gifts. For example, on the show “The League” the winner will receive a trophy called the Shiva and the loser gets a trophy called the Sacko. Also, it is estimated that 32 million Americans spend $15 billion dollars total or $467 dollars per person in their lifetime. It effects businesses as well, it will generate a $13.4 billion dollar or $895 million dollar weekly loss in productivity over the 15 week fantasy season. The National Football League will also make money off of it because any product licensed by the NFL will generate revenue for the league. People will follow players more closely because they have them on their team which will increase sales of merchandise for the NFL.
