Family and Domestic Violence has many stereotypes that we perceive as normal, such as women and children are the primary victims, and males are the primary perpetrators. However, as much as that might be true, some male victims and female perpetrators exist. Family and Domestic Violence occurs all over the world and is affecting millions of women, males and children (Phillips, Dunkley, Muller, & Lorimer, 2015). Because of this, there are policies in Australia that are meant to stop Family and Domestic Violence before it is too late. There will be a discussion on what is the worthiness of these policies, do they work and what could be improved. There is no universal or set definition of Family and Domestic Violence, however, there is an understanding of what they classify as Family and Domestic Violence. The understanding is that it is classed as Family and Domestic Violence if an act of violence, intimidation and coercion occurs between persons of opposite or same sex, that have had an intimate relationship; violence between family members, partners or housemates; violence towards or from children (Australian Government Prime Minister and Cabinet, 2016). There are further categories that are classed under the family and domestic violence umbrella, these include physical violence, emotional and psychological abuse, sexual assault and financial abuse (Australian Government Prime Minister and Cabinet, 2016). There is a primary focus of these programs, especially if they are working with children and young adults, which is to develop skills to be able to treat their partner with respect through the education of young people aged 14-24; the optimal outcomes of these programs are to raise awareness of ethical behavior, develop protective behaviors, and developing their skills in respectful relationships with perspective partners (Mitchell, 2011). However, there is a bad side to these education programs. These programs do not broadly associate all types of violence, they only focus on one form of violence, and this is men’s violence against women, and the education do not challenge enough of the masculinities and constructing real prevention measures for family and domestic violence (Murray & Powell, 2011). What could improve these education systems would to have a variety of education on all the different forms of violence from men’s violence against female’s, to women’s violence against males, and even same sex violence in relationships. Also, a good way to improve these education systems is to educate the young people in the consequences of being a bystander and allowing someone to hit or abuse someone else and to tell them not to be afraid to speak up if it ever did happen to them or someone they
