The Family and Medical Leave Act was signed into Federal law by Former President Bill Clinton in 1993. The focus of this act was to allow employees to balance their work and home life, by allowing time off for medical leave for themselves or covered family members. It allows up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave that can be taken all at once or on an intermittent basis. There are certain restrictions in place such as being employed for at least a year with a minimum amount of hours over that year, the amount of employees within a certain geographic region for the company, and reporting processes to be completed both by the employee and employer.
