Recommended: Reconstruction era after the civil war
After years of a cruel war that pitted brother against brother, the United States of America entered into a period of time called Reconstruction. Reconstruction was an act implemented by Congress to help rebuild the majorly devastated southern states. Another of its goals was help newly freed slaves successfully merge into life as a free people among many hostile whites. It was a goal of President Abraham Lincoln’s for Reconstruction to be a very smooth and successful period of time. “With malice toward none, with charity to all,” Lincoln said in his second inauguration speech. He was referring to not only the conflict between black men and white men, but also the hard feelings between the north and south. The southern states had entered the Civil War with such confidence and dreams of independence that many were now humiliated at the idea of having to receive aid from the federal government. President Lincoln’s assassination also put in the country in further turmoil. However, an America like the one before the war would not come together quite so easily. A nation that had full equality for both blacks and whites has taken 100 years for us to achieve, if we have even achieved that yet. Even though the politicians of the day agreed on the need of Reconstruction, their ideas of how to accomplish it were vastly different. Just because one was against slavery did not necessarily mean that one was pro-African-American. Now that the slaves were free, the problem of their liberties and rights became an issue. Many issues kept Reconstruction from helping the newly freed slaves. For instance, the vast majority of former slaves were uneducated. In many southern states, before and during the Civil War, the educating of slaves was illeg... ... middle of paper ... ...tion, originally, had been planned as a slow, gradual process, moving too quickly just caused more issues. In conclusion, Reconstruction failed for the freedmen for a variety of reasons. I believe the main reason for this failure was the inability for the two political parties to agree on what they wanted to achieve. Did they want total freedom for the freed slaves, only partial freedom, or just the rebuilding that issue coupled with unpopularity, the freedman’s culture being rooted in the south, and the freed slaves’ inability to find work outside of the south resulted in a process that took over a century to work successfully. I feel that it is very unfortunate that President Lincoln was killed so shortly after the end of the Civil War. I believe that since Reconstruction was Lincoln’s idea he would have carried it out more successfully than his successors did.
Yes, Reconstruction was doomed to fail. The first reason for this was that Lincoln started a plan or policy for Reconstruction before the Civil War was over (page 792 of our assigned readings). Lincoln said that "he intended to to deal with the defeated South "with malice toward none" and "charity for all" to "achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves (Page 792 of our assigned readings)."" The first problem with this thought is that who knows how the war would play out? Yes, Lincoln believed that this proposition would help end the war, but was that a good time to begin Reconstruction? Before the war even ended? Lincoln's plan eventually angered many Radical Republicans, and that is how the Wade-Davis Bill was introduced.
Reconstruction is known as the period after the Civil war. The whole country was separated in two, people didn’t know what to do, the south was completely destroyed, and there were a lot of decisions to be made by the president. It lasted four years, and there was over half a million casualties between the union (North) and the confederate states (South). The north was declared the winner of the war after General Lee surrender in the Appomattox court house on April 9, 1865. The causes of the war was the secession of several southern states, they argued that it was up to them and it was in their rights to decide whether they should make slavery legal or illegal in their own boundaries. But the Union had other things in mind, the union wanted to decide whether or not the states were going to have slaves. This was just to make sure the country was equal on slavery and non-slavery on both sides, but states thought the union was abusing their power and being too strict on them, and that is when they decided to secede. The first state to secede was south Carolina, then they were followed by six other states, among those states were Florida, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. These states got together and created the confederate states of America in February 4, 1861, and the president was Jefferson Davis, they also made a government similar to the one of the U.S. Constitution.
The Reconstruction was undoubtedly a failure . The political and social aim of Reconstruction was to form national unity as well as create civil rights and equality for African Americans. Even though Reconstruction laid the foundation for equal rights in the United States, it did not achieve its primary goals. In the time of Reconstruction, many African Americans still felt the effects of oppression and many were still trapped in an undesirable social and economic class. The Reconstruction was an overall fail despite the fact that it was the shaky groundwork for a fight for equality in the years to come.
Reconstruction succeeded in a few ways. The most obvious and most important would be how it attempted to lead the nation back together. During the Civil War America was split in half. Meaning, one side was for slavery while the other was not. The Union states being the Northern states of America were not for slavery at all. Whereas the Confederacy,
April 1865 saw the end of the Civil War, and with it came the need for some sort of policy to reunify, restore or “reconstruct” the political, economic, and social relationship of the southern states with the rest of the Union. The period of this process of bringing the states of the Confederacy back into the Union is called Reconstruction.
Reconstruction began in 1865, when America had just finished fighting the Civil War. Reconstruction was a time when America tried to become a developed country again. The south struggled politically, economically, and socially. During reconstruction there were almost four million former slaves, who had been freed by the 13th amendment, who were on their own and had no idea how to live alone. People were scattered everywhere trying to get things fixed, which took a long twelve years. Socially the south faced problems such as, the number of wounded soldiers there was after the Civil War was over, which decreased their number of workers that could work to help reconstruction. Economically the south faces a great deal of starvation problems. Towns were burnt and fields with crops were ruined. This delayed the replanting of crops while the prices of food, were still very high. Lastly, politically the south faced issues with voting of different races.
Reconstruction had lasted around fourteen years through the years of 1863 to 1877. The purpose of Reconstruction was to get rid of the Confederate forces from the governments and to arrange that the civil rights set the African Americans were respected. It was seen as a failure because the north was not successful when they wanted to repair the south and bring it to the Union. When Reconstruction was going on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments were established. The thirteenth amendment was approved in 1865 to revoke slavery; the fourteenth amendment was approved in 1868 to process and protect the judgements that were appropriate for all of the people; and the fifteenth amendment was approved in 1870 to forbid discrimination in voting rights on the basis of people’s race and color. There were a lot of different opinions whether Reconstruction had any positive or negative as its results.
On one hand the slaves were free, and on the other hand they were not given equal rights, and they were discriminated for the color of their skin tone. In other words, Reconstruction was a mixed success, which combined both positive and negative impacts. By the end of the era, the North and South were once again reunited, and all southern state legislatures had abolished slavery in their constitutions. However, it some sense, Reconstruction was a failure because blacks were not provided equal rights and opportunities. Racism and segregation did not end at all. On the other hand, there was a huge change to the country as the US was completely in a chaos stage during the civil war. Despite some obstructions, it can be concluded that the Reconstruction was somewhat beneficial for African American. As time passes, many schools and colleges were founded for blacks, and many other doors were opened to uplift their life. Overall, all these outcomes can be considered as a huge
It is generally assumed that the Reconstruction period of the United States failed. This era, which lasted from the end of the Civil War to the election of Rutherford B. Hayes, saw three amendments to the Constitution, two Civil Rights Acts, and the “enfranchisement of the black man”. (Frederick Douglass, 1865) Reconstruction was necessary to rebuild the South’s economy, and welcome states back into the Union. While it succeeded in legally uniting all the states, civil matters were not so easily influenced. Slavery, for example, was abolished during the Civil War due to Abraham Lincoln’s war powers. Over the next decade, three amendments were passed through Congress to protect the rights of these freedmen. Congress, at this time, was held
The original purpose of Reconstruction was to restore the buildings and the economy of the south the best they could, but without the immoral element of slavery. But, reconstruction under the Johnson Presidency was a failure for a few reasons: 1) Convict Leasing, 2) Sharecropping, 3) the Ku Klux Klan, 4) Segregation in schools, even in the North, 5) Carpetbaggers/Scalawags, 6) misleading statistics, and 7) racism.
When Reconstruction started in 1865, a broken America had just finished clashing the Political War. In all respects, Reconstruction was generally just that. It was a
With the end of the Civil war in 1865, the new nation of the United States now faced challenges on restoring peace within the Union. The North, having won the civil war, now faced the task to implement reconstruction of the South. They came in contact with the questions of: What should happen to the freed slaves, should the freed slaves have rights, what should be done to the Confederate leaders, and how should the South be reconstructed? There were many different ideas and views on how Reconstruction should be handled, but only one succeeded more successfully than the other. Although they bear some superficial similarities, the difference between presidential and congressional reconstruction are clear. The president believed that Confederate
The Reconstruction was a success due to the restoration of the union, however, it was a failure in every other aspect because President Andrew Johnson and the Republican-led Congress failed to protect former slaves from white oppression and failed to deliver on major changes to the social structure of the South. President Andrew Johnson offered pardons to all white Southerners, except Confederate leaders and wealthy planters (although most of these men received pardons at a later date), and allowed them to form their new governments. By granting southern states the opportunity to form their own new governments, black codes, voter qualifications, and other anti-progressive legislation, which tried to reverse the rights that blacks had gained,
If Lincoln had it his way, Reconstruction would have been short, sweet and to the point but the country was not allowing that. I do not know how he expected such a thing considering the South was still acting rebellious and racism was dominant all over the country. There would be no agreements without strong laws being made and enforced by the government. Now, many northerners wanted the South to be punished and completely reformed of
In theory, Lincoln’s plan of Reconstruction seemed an efficient way to redeem the South of its devastation. He was willing to give them a break and do far more for the former Confederates than they deserved. Reconstruction proved to be a failure because Southerners regressive and resistant to change. Because of conflicting viewpoints between Andrew Johnson and congress, the false promises of the Reconstruction Amendments and South’s reign of terror on African Americans these efforts were dismantled.
