Bradbury’s exaggeration of media from 1953 may not be entirely far from the nature of electronic media today. His prophecy makes us question the potential of how our society can have the ability to control the masses with electronic media. When a random man dies in place of Montag to cover up the government’s incapability, Granger speculates that "they didn't show the man's face in focus. Even your best friends couldn't tell if it was you. They scrambled it just enough to let the imagination take over.” (Bradbury 149-150). This shows similarities to our media manipulation in advertising where businesses sell their product on television breaks, banners on websites and mobile applications by paying media outlets to show their products in a one-sided way so viewers buy more of their product. However, in our society, the use of social media prevents us from becoming like Fahrenheit 451’s world. Everyone has the ability to easily share anything including their opinions, events, ideas, and trivial thoughts about everything, which can eliminate bias and propaganda. Social media enables people to connect with each other and have easier communication. The world of Fahrenheit 451 bans all books left in the world in order to stop intellectual thinking. Beatty points out that “once, books appealed to a few people, here, there, everywhere” (Bradbury 56). Although we have not gone to that extent of burning books, the time we spend on reading have decreased and the time spent on media has increased significantly. A study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average American reads only 19 minutes a day, teenagers, spend just four minutes a day reading on their days off. Data continues to prove the growth of electronic media usage, A Nielsen Company audience report from 2016 reveals that adults in the United States devoted about 10 hours and 39 minutes of screen time for media each day. “Television not only ate away magazines’ national advertising market share, but it also took readers away — general entertainment seekers” (Randle). From a young age, we are exposed to various types of electronic media contributing to negative health outcomes such as obesity, tobacco use, drug and alcohol use, and low academic achievement according to a review of 173 studies on Media and Child and Adolescent Health arranged by various universities. Fahrenheit 451 is a science fiction book that still reflects to our current world. Bradbury does a nice job predicting what the world would be like in the future; the future for his time period and for ours as well. The society Bradbury describes is, in many ways, like the one we are living in now.
Imagine living in a world where everything everyone is the same. How would you feel if you were not able to know important matters? Being distracted with technology in order to not feel fear or getting upset. Just like in this society, the real world, where people have their faces glued to their screen. Also the children in this generation, they are mostly using video games, tablets, and phones instead of going outside and being creative with one another. Well in Fahrenheit 451 their society was just like that, dull and conformity all around. But yet the people believed they were “happy” the way things were, just watching TV, not thinking outside the box.
Ultimately, in his novel Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury is saying that technology, although wonderful, can be very dangerous. Technology can enhance the productivity of our lives, while reducing the quality.Human interaction is the glue that holds society together, and technology simply cannot be a substitute.
The theme of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 can be viewed from several different angles. First and foremost, Bradbury's novel gives an anti-censorship message. Bradbury understood censorship to be a natural outcropping of an overly tolerant society. Once one group objects to something someone has written, that book is modified and censorship begins. Soon, another minority group objects to something else in the book, and it is again edited until eventually the book is banned altogether. In Bradbury's novel, society has evolved to such an extreme that all literature is illegal to possess. No longer can books be read, not only because they might offend someone, but because books raise questions that often lead to revolutions and even anarchy. The intellectual thinking that arises from reading books can often be dangerous, and the government doesn't want to put up with this danger. Yet this philosophy, according to Bradbury, completely ignores the benefits of knowledge. Yes, knowledge can cause disharmony, but in many ways, knowledge of the past, which is recorded in books, can prevent man from making similar mistakes in the present and future.
“Remember when we had to actually do things back in 2015, when people barely had technology and everyday life was so difficult and different? When people read and thought and had passions, dreams, loves, and happiness?” This is what the people of the book Fahrenheit 451 were thinking, well that is if they thought at all or even remembered what life used to be like before society was changed.
In the mid-1900s, the Unites States was rapidly changing from the introduction of a new standard of technology. The television had become the dominant form of entertainment. This seemingly simple thing quickly impacted the average American’s lifestyle and culture by creating new standards for the average household. New, intimidating concepts came about, and they began embedding themselves into American culture. It became clear to some people that some of these ideas could give rise to new social problems, which it did. Sixty- five years ago, in a library basement, a man named Ray Bradbury wrote a book called Fahrenheit 451, which was able to accurately predict social problems that would occur because he saw that Americans are addicted to gaining quick rewards and new technology, and also obsessed with wanting to feel content with their lives.
Imagine a society where owning books is illegal, and the penalty for their possession—to watch them combust into ashes. Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, illustrates just such a society. Bradbury wrote his science fiction in 1951 depicting a society of modern age with technology abundant in this day and age—even though such technology was unheard of in his day. Electronics such as headphones, wall-sized television sets, and automatic doors were all a significant part of Bradbury’s description of humanity. Human life styles were also predicted; the book described incredibly fast transportation, people spending countless hours watching television and listening to music, and the minimal interaction people had with one another. Comparing those traits with today’s world, many similarities emerge. Due to handheld devices, communication has transitioned to texting instead of face-to-face conversations. As customary of countless dystopian novels, Fahrenheit 451 conveys numerous correlations between society today and the fictional society within the book.
In Federalist 10 James Madison argued that while factions are inevitable, they might have interests adverse to the rights of other citizens. Madison’s solution was the implementation of a Democratic form of government. He felt that majority rule would not eliminate factions, but it would not allow them to be as powerful as they were. With majority rule this would force all parties affiliate and all social classes from the rich white to the poor minorities to work together and for everyone’s opinion and views to be heard.
To start, the novel Fahrenheit 451 describes the fictional futuristic world in which our main protagonist Guy Montag resides. Montag is a fireman, but not your typical fireman. In fact, firemen we see in our society are the ones, who risk their lives trying to extinguish fires; however, in the novel firemen are not such individuals, what our society think of firemen is unheard of by the citizens of this futuristic American country. Instead firemen burn books. They erase knowledge. They obliterate the books of thinkers, dreamers, and storytellers. They destroy books that often describe the deepest thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Great works such as Shakespeare and Plato, for example, are illegal and firemen work to eradicate them. In the society where Guy Montag lives, knowledge is erased and replaced with ignorance. This society also resembles our world, a world where ignorance is promoted, and should not be replacing knowledge. This novel was written by Ray Bradbury, He wrote other novels such as the Martian chronicles, the illustrated man, Dandelion wine, and something wicked this way comes, as well as hundreds of short stories, he also wrote for the theater, cinema, and TV. In this essay three arguments will be made to prove this point. First the government use firemen to get rid of books because they are afraid people will rebel, they use preventative measures like censorship to hide from the public the truth, the government promotes ignorance to make it easier for them to control their citizens. Because the government makes books illegal, they make people suppress feelings and also makes them miserable without them knowing.
Everyone has the ability to look at where the world is today and picture what the future might hold. That’s exactly what Huxley, Orwell and Bradbury did in their futuristic novels, though exaggerating quite a bit. In Huxley’s novel Brave New World, he depicts a society where people are decanted from bottles instead of being born from mothers. George Orwell gives us a glimpse at a world where everything is regulated, even sex, in his novel 1984. Bradbury foresaw the future in the most accurate way in his novel Fahrenheit 451; writing about a future without literature to guard the people from negative feelings, just as our college campuses in America are doing by adding trigger warnings to books with possible offensive content.
The North Korean government is known as authoritarian socialist; one-man dictatorship. North Korea could be considered a start of a dystopia. Dystopia is a community or society where people are unhappy and usually not treated fairly. This relates how Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451 shows the readers how a lost of connections with people and think for themselves can lead to a corrupt and violent society known as a dystopia.
Fahrenheit 451’s relevance to today can be very detailed and prophetic when we take a deep look into our American society. Although we are not living in a communist setting with extreme war waging on, we have gained technologies similar to the ones Bradbury spoke of in Fahrenheit 451 and a stubborn civilization that holds an absence on the little things we should enjoy. Bradbury sees the future of America as a dystopia, yet we still hold problematic issues without the title of disaster, as it is well hidden under our Democracy today. Fahrenheit 451 is much like our world today which includes television, the loss of free speech, and the loss of the education and use of books.
Bradbury, who had grown up with books as a child, uses the plot of Fahrenheit 451 to represent how literature is simply being reduced. He focuses on the contrast between a world of books and a world of televisions. According to the article “Fahrenheit 451,” from the first days of television in the 1950’s, when all Americans scrambled to have one in their home, “watching television has competed with reading books” (148). Edward Eller suggests another reason for the rich use of technology in Fahrenheit 451: in WWII, just before the publishing of the novel, “technological innovations allowed these fascist states to more effectively destroy the books they did not find agreeable and produce new forms of communication implanted with state-sanctioned ideas” (Eller 150). The idea of written fiction being replaced by large televisions evidently seemed logical at the time.

In Elysium, Max grows up as a child with the inspiration of leaving his shattered earth and making it to the higher world, known as “Elysium” with his friend Frey.
